The Job That Changed Everything
The rain fell steadily against the windows of the small office as Maya stared at the letter in her trembling hands.
"We regret to inform you that your position has been terminated due to company restructuring."
She read the words again, hoping they would somehow change. They didn't.
After three years of working tirelessly, she had lost her job in less than five minutes.
With a heavy sigh, Maya packed the few belongings from her desk—a family photo, a notebook, and a coffee mug her younger sister, Lily, had given her on her birthday.
Outside, the cold wind greeted her as she stepped onto the busy streets. People hurried past, each absorbed in their own lives, unaware that hers had just fallen apart.
Her phone buzzed.
"How was work today?" Lily's cheerful text appeared on the screen.
Maya forced a smile before typing, "Everything's fine. I'll be home soon."
She couldn't bring herself to tell Lily the truth—not yet.
When she reached their tiny apartment, Lily greeted her with a warm hug.
"You're home early!" she said happily.
"Yeah... they let us leave early today," Maya lied.
That night, after Lily had gone to sleep, Maya sat at the kitchen table with a stack of unpaid bills. Rent was due in a week. Their savings were almost gone, and Lily's school fees still hadn't been paid.
Tears threatened to fall, but Maya wiped them away.
"I can't give up," she whispered to herself.
The next morning, she spent hours searching for work. Most companies wanted years of experience she didn't have. Others had already filled the positions.
Just as she was about to close her laptop, a notification appeared.
Blackwood Holdings was looking for a personal assistant to its CEO, Ethan Blackwood—one of the country's youngest and wealthiest billionaires.
The salary was far more than Maya had ever imagined earning.
Her heart raced as she read the requirements.
"Professional. Organized. Able to work under pressure. Confidentiality is essential."
Without overthinking, she submitted her application.
Minutes later, her phone rang.
"Good afternoon. Am I speaking with Miss Maya?"
"Yes."
"This is Blackwood Holdings. Mr. Blackwood's office has reviewed your application. We'd like to invite you for an interview tomorrow morning."
Maya froze.
"So... does that mean..."
"It means you've been shortlisted."
After ending the call, she stared silently at the phone.
For the first time in days, hope returned.
She had no idea that accepting this interview would change her life forever—and draw her into a world of wealth, dangerous secrets, family betrayal, and a man whose heart was guarded by shadows from his past.
