CHAPTER ONE
As the taxi came to a halt, Miranda felt her pulse quicken. She stepped out slowly, the gravel crunching beneath her worn flats, and lifted her gaze to the towering iron gates before her. At twenty-four, she was about to begin work for the Negasi family—one of the most powerful multibillionaire dynasties in the country—not by choice, but by necessity. She was here as a substitute for her aunt, Mrs. Alicia, the family’s long-serving help who had broken her leg while working. Until she recovered, Miranda would take her place. Mrs. Alicia had raised her since the age of two, after her mother abandoned her without a backward glance. Nursing school at Hillsborough Community College had been Miranda’s escape plan, her promise of independence. But graduation hadn’t erased the student debt trailing behind her. Working here, even temporarily, was the best option she had. The gates loomed like something pulled from another era—an imposing French-château design forged in iron, etched with a rust-tinted portcullis pattern that spoke of old wealth and silent authority. Miranda inhaled deeply, steadying herself, and adjusted the strap of her bag as she walked closer. A man stood near the gate, unmoving. He wore a dark uniform, his posture rigid, his face unreadable. He had been watching her since she exited the taxi. A breeze lifted her long brunette hair, brushing it across her cheek as she stopped before him. “Hello, sir,” she said politely. “I’m Miranda—the substitute for Mrs. Alicia.” His eyes swept over her from head to toe, assessing, measuring. Without a word, he raised a hand and spoke quietly into an intercom. Seconds passed, heavy and uncomfortable. Then he nodded once and pressed a button on the small remote in his palm. The massive gates opened with a low, mechanical groan. “Thank you,” Miranda murmured as she stepped through. Her breath caught instantly. The mansion rose before her in breathtaking grandeur—vast, regal, and unapologetically powerful. Pale stone walls gleamed beneath the sun, while carefully manicured gardens stretched across the grounds. Beds of white camellias, deep-red roses, lavender, and blooming hibiscus lined the pathways, their fragrances blending softly in the air. At the center of the courtyard stood a towering marble fountain, the goddess Hera carved in elegant stillness, water cascading from her outstretched hands into a wide basin below. Men in black suits and dark glasses stood stationed throughout the estate, positioned with military precision, alert and watchful. Miranda swallowed and continued toward the main entrance, her footsteps echoing against the stone steps. The grand double doors—crafted from heavy oak and detailed with gold accents—seemed to loom higher with every step she took. Before she could knock, the doors opened. A woman in her early fifties stood waiting. She wore a perfectly tailored navy-blue uniform, her posture impeccable. Black hair streaked with silver was pulled into a tight bun at the nape of her neck. A small, composed smile touched her lips as her sharp gaze settled on Miranda. “Hello dear, I assume you are Miranda,” the woman said calmly.
