the alpha in the shadows
Bound by Blood and Moonlight
Chapter One: The Alpha in the Shadows
---
Everyone at Blackmoor Academy thought Zara Storm was just another pretty face with a sharp attitude and expensive boots.
Let them believe it.
Because if they knew the truth—that she was the youngest Alpha of Crescent Moon Pack, crowned by blood and battle—they’d run screaming. Or worse… they’d bow.
And right now? She didn’t want either.
Zara tugged her hoodie lower over her silver-streaked hair, slipping through the school gates like smoke. Her eyes—stormy grey and colder than steel—swept across the courtyard. Morning sunlight danced on marble statues and polished cars. Rich kids milled about with zero clue they were standing beside a literal apex predator.
“Zara Storm,” a familiar voice called.
Kael Devrin.
He leaned against the black iron fence with his signature smirk and messy golden hair that looked like it was styled by the wind itself. His school tie hung loose around his neck like he owned every rule and broke them for fun. And gods, did he smell good—warm spice and cedarwood, comfort and chaos.
“You’re late,” he said, falling into step beside her.
“You’re always waiting,” she shot back.
“Because I’m your Beta. It’s my job.”
“You’re annoying.”
“You love it.”
She didn’t answer. Because he wasn’t wrong.
Kael was her anchor—loyal, strong, hers since they were pups. But lately, he’d been looking at her differently. Speaking to her like she wasn’t just his Alpha… but something more.
As they entered the school hallway, Zara’s senses twitched. Her wolf stirred beneath her skin.
Something was off.
Then she smelled it.
Cold. Metallic. Ancient.
A scent like moonlight and blood.
That’s when she saw him.
By the admin office, a new boy stood, flipping through paperwork like he wasn’t sucking the oxygen out of the room. He was tall, draped in a black coat too stylish for school rules, with inky dark hair and skin like frost. His eyes—deep red, glowing faintly—locked onto hers the second she looked.
Time. Stopped.
Zara's wolf went dead silent.
Her body tensed, instinct roaring through her bloodstream.
He’s not human.
Lucien.
That name whispered across the minds of every supernatural being on campus before the principal even introduced him. Vampire royalty. Exiled from somewhere ancient. Now… enrolled at her school.
His eyes narrowed like he recognized her on a level no one else ever had.
Zara stepped forward, slowly.
Kael grabbed her wrist. “Don’t,” he warned, voice tight. “His aura—he’s dangerous.”
“I’m not afraid of him.”
“You should be.”
Lucien smiled, that bloodcurdling smile that said he knew all your secrets… even the ones you didn’t know you had.
Then he walked toward her.
Straight. Calm. Like they were the only two people in the world.
He stopped inches away.
“You hide it well,” Lucien said softly, voice smooth as sin. “But I can feel the Alpha in your bones.”
Zara’s jaw clenched. “Who the hell are you?”
“I’m the one fate has sent to wake you up.”
And just like that, he turned and vanished into the hallway crowd, leaving Zara frozen—heart racing, blood burning, and Kael radiating jealousy beside her.
“What. The hell. Was that?” Kael hissed.
Zara swallowed. “I don’t know.”
But deep down, something ancient whispered back:
You will.
