the beta's Bond

--- 📚 Bound by Blood and Moonlight Chapter Two: The Beta’s Bond That night, Zara dreamt of fire. Not the kind that warmed. The kind that devoured. She stood in a ring of flames, barefoot on cracked stone. Above her, the full moon bled red, and two figures moved toward her from opposite ends of the inferno. Kael, eyes glowing golden, chest rising with fury. Lucien, pale and graceful, fangs bared like a promise. They both reached for her—one hand clawed, the other cold—and when their fingers touched her skin, her body split into two. Zara screamed— And woke up gasping in her bed, drenched in sweat. It was just past 3 a.m. Her room was dark, but not empty. She sat up fast. “Who’s there?” No answer. But the air shifted. Cold. Ancient. Familiar. Then—he stepped from the shadow. Lucien. “You should really lock your windows,” he said softly, his eyes glowing like coals. “Especially when you're the most powerful creature in this school.” Zara’s heart raced. “How did you even get in?” He glanced toward the open window. “Vampire. We don’t knock.” “You need to leave.” “I needed to see you.” Lucien moved closer, silent and smooth. Zara stood her ground, even as her wolf clawed at her from within. “I had a dream,” she said. “You were in it.” “I know.” She blinked. “What?” “I saw it too.” Her breath caught in her throat. He was standing close enough now that she could see the faint silver shimmer in his irises. “Our bond is awakening,” Lucien said. “It’s not just fate. It’s something… older. Deeper.” Zara took a shaky breath. “Kael is my Beta. My first bond.” Lucien's jaw clenched. “And I am your forbidden one.” Then he reached out—slow, deliberate—and touched her arm. The second his fingers brushed her skin, pain flared. Zara gasped as a mark burned across her wrist—faint at first, then glowing red like an ancient rune. Lucien’s hand trembled. “You’re marked.” She yanked away. “What the hell did you do to me?” “I didn’t do anything,” he whispered. “It was already there. Hidden. Until now.” Suddenly—BANG. Her bedroom door flew open. Kael burst in, shirtless, eyes glowing, chest heaving. “Zara—!” He stopped when he saw Lucien. A growl ripped from Kael’s throat. Lucien didn’t even flinch. “You’re late, dog.” Kael lunged. Zara moved to stop him, but the two boys collided like lightning and thunder—Kael’s fist swinging, Lucien dodging, cold wind exploding from his body. “STOP IT!” she roared, releasing a burst of Alpha power that shook the entire room. Both boys froze. Kael turned to her, eyes filled with raw fury and something else—hurt. “You let him touch you?” Zara’s lips parted. “Kael, I—” He didn’t wait. He turned and stormed out, slamming the door so hard the window cracked. Lucien stared at her. “The bond between you two... it’s fraying. He’s losing control.” “And you want to make it worse?” “I want to protect what’s mine.” “You don’t own me.” His eyes burned. “Not yet.” Then he vanished—just like that. Zara stood there, heart racing, wrist burning, room wrecked. And for the first time in her life, she was truly terrified. Because the mark on her skin wasn’t just a bond. It was a warning. Something was coming. And she was the one who would have to face it. Alone. ---
