Chapter one
Evie's POV I quickly wiped my tears as i heard incoming footsteps. Seconds passed and the door opens revealing a gloomy Adams. I immediately scowl down, pretending everything is okay in front of him. "Is there a problem hubby?" I softly asked but he decides not to answer me and ignore me like I was invincible. I bent my head. What do I expect from him? "Are you going out again? When will you be back home?" I followed him as he prepared his baggage. This seems to be his every time routine anytime he's back from a business trip. Or something. "Adams, can I at least know where you're going?" Again, he didn't give me a reply or even glance at me. I sigh. "Can you at least say something and stop ignoring me? Shouldn't you have gotten to the fact that there's always a woman waiting for you every time you leave?" I voiced those words with a hint of anger. But instead, I refrain myself asking anymore questions the moment he turned and approached me with a threatening and deadly glare. "You joking thing! Waiting you say?! Do you expect me to stay here with you?! No, I will never. Have you seen yourself in the mirror lately? Oh! You disgust me. And you see this?" He pointed to me and him " is the little payment of what you've done to me. You stupid woman!" He shouted. With that, he hurriedly packed his clothes into his bags and stormed out of the room, closing the door aggressively. I gently found my way to the bed and sat down quietly. Every iota of strength in me vanished. I should have gotten used to it but I can't help my self from crying because of his cold treatment towards me. "You'll be fine Evie.... You'll be fine" I consoled myself as I cry quietly, praying he finally gets to accept me. Signing to this marriage agreement was signing to the begining of my nightmares. If only i hadn't taken this decision, I would have protected my heart from breaking over and over again by the man I claimed to love. Flashback I did a happy dance as I hum my favourite song, walking down the side walk. I had just received my paycheck and finally, I could pay part of the money my father owes Mr Grant, the bar owner, before he died. A huge body blocked my path as I made a turn into the narrow street that leads to my apartment. "Oh no! Mr Grant?" I shudder. He was the least person I was expecting to see before my day ends, not like I was expecting anybody either. "I finally get to see your face despite you trying to run away from the debts you owe?" He stepped forward with an ugly scowl plastered on his face. I instinctively stepped back. "I wasn't running away from the debts. I.. i got my salary today. I was coming to see you tomorrow. I swear." I answered him. "Tomorrow? You think I'm stupid?" He grabs my arm roughly. "Your good for nothing father died owing me eight hundred dollars! You think I don't need that money? Look, you either pay all today or you come work for me in my bar until you clear it!". He fired back. "Mr Grant, please I'm begging you, I'll pay you everything eventually but I can only pay you two hundred right now. I'll balance you the rest by next month once I receive my paycheck. I promise, I just --" I pleaded. "That is not enough!." He yanked my arm harder this time. "You think promises pay my bills? Let's go!". I try to pull my arm free but he wouldn't let go. "Let go of me you're hurting me. Please stop! I'll pay you" I tearfully pleaded. I was freaking out already. My heart, racing so hard against my chest. A sudden honk interrupted the moment. The lights of the car shining so bright in both our eyes. The sleek black car slowed down and stopped right in front of us. A well dressed middle aged couple stepped out from the car, elegantly dressed and i knew they don't belong here in the slums. "Excuse me? What's happening here?" The woman asked. I was about responding to her when Mr Grant quickly let go of my hand and straightened up. "This girl owes me." He blurted out. "Her drunkard dad, drank on credit in my bar and died without paying a dime." I've never felt so ashamed as I am feeling right now. I parted my lips to say something but he raised a hand, silencing me to shut up. "I have been patient enough. She either pays me all that she owes me or she follows me to work in my bar till she clears the debt." The couple exchanged a knowing look, filled with concern and pity for me. "Miss, is this true?" The woman asked. I swallowed hard, my voice trembling, "Yes ma. My dad... He passed from a liver disease and ever since I've been trying to pay everyone he owed. I only got my salary today, I can't pay him all at once. I just need time." A tear slipped down my cheek before I could even stop it. "Oh sweetheart..." Her face softener instantly. "How much does she owe you?" The man asked. "Eight hundred dollars" Mr Grant replied. The man opened his wallet and handled nine hundred dollars to Mr Grant. "Consider the debt settled." He said. Mr Grant snatched the money with greedy hands. "Nice doing business with you" he responded and walked away without even a thank you. “You… paid it? You didn’t have to—please, I can pay you back next month—” I was too stunned. The woman gently touched my shoulder. “No, darling. Keep your money. You look like you need it more than we do.” That single moment of kindness cracked something in my chest. “I… I don’t know what to say. Thank you so much..” I let out a shaky breath. "Lucy. Lucy Tyler and here's my Husband, Richard." Mrs Lucy Tyler introduces herself. I nodded, not trusting myself to speak. "Come on in, let's drop you off. It's not safe to be out here by this time" Mr Tyler offered. "Ah, no sir. You don't need to. My house is just down the road I could walk down" I suggested. "We insist...." Mrs Tyler trailed off. "Evie. Evie Torres" I replied. "Alright Evie. Let's drop you off" I accepted their kind offer. The car parked in front of my house. I thanked them whole heartedly. I was about getting down from the car when Mrs Tyler spoke. "You shouldn't carry everything alone, my dear. We promise to always check up on you whenever we find ourselves in the area" she pulled me into a motherly hug. They slipped some money into my hands. I was so shocked I refused to collect it. "Just enough for your little up keeps and for dinner tonight" Mrs Tyler concluded. I nodded slowly, my voice cracking. “Thank you. Thank you so much.” Mr. Tyler smiled kindly. I got down from the car and waved till I could no longer see their car. End of Flashback My life would have turned out to be a mess if Lucy and Richard hadn't come true for me that very day. They were my angels in Human form. They saved me and I'll forever be indebted to them "I vow to make you a better person Adams" I slowly wiped my tears. "One day, you will see me. You will love me and Only me. No matter how much you try to hurt me, I won't break because I'm Evie Torres. Eventually, you'll regard me as your wife. I promise."
