ALAN I wheeled closer to the pool and then saw a scene that stopped my heart: Ariel in the pool, lying there like a log, with her eyes closed. I didn't spend time putting on my thinking cap; I just sprang into action. I checked the situation quickly and realized I must be fast. I didn't think twice. I reacted. I dived straight into the swimming pool; its water received me like a cold shroud. I swam as hard as my ability would allow, powerful strokes and definiteness. I swam up to Ariel's side and turned her gently over, checking for any sign of life. Her complexion was pale, her skin cold to the touch. I knew I had to get her out of the water, and fast.
