Alex sighed and closed the door. Jill looked at her and smiled. This time at the hospital, Alex had required extensive tests. She’d suffered some structural damage to her throat, but luckily her larynx had not been crushed. Her neck was a deep shade of purple that the doctor warned would look worse before it healed. The only damage Jill sustained was deep lacerations to her knees from the broken glass that littered the alley. Once the grime was washed away, her knees looked like ground hamburger, but the hospital staff had expertly treated them and they already looked better. “How are you holding up?” Alex asked. “Surprisingly well.” Jill hugged Alex. “I could use a shower though.” “Me too.
