Chapter 4 - Ameilia

1383 Words
I thought James was going to pass out, but once I get out of the car behind him, I see that he's getting sick. I move closer to see if he needs help and that's when I see it. "Oh no," I accidentally say out loud. "What is it?" Raven asks. "We need to get him to the hospital," I say in a much calmer voice than I feel. "f***k no, we're not going to the hospital. I'm fine." James grunts out. "There's blood in your vomit!" I yell at him, while Luke runs over and starts talking to him. After going back and forth a bit, the grumpy, stubborn, pig-headed, man insists that we bring him back to their clubhouse or whatever. "Don't look at me like that," James says weakly with his head back in my lap. I can't help but reach down and brush his hair back. He's drenched in sweat, and it was starting to fall on his forehead. "Like what?" "Like I've personally offended and disgusted you." "I'm not disgusted, I just really think you should go to the hospital." "I don't do hospitals." "Oh no? Do you do funerals, as the guest of honor? Because vomiting up blood, after being beaten half to death, is not a good sign." "Has anyone ever told you you're funny when you're being snarky?" "You haven't known me anywhere near long enough to know that. Would you please tell Luke to drive us to the hospital instead of your house?" "First of all, it's a clubhouse. Second, one of our brothers is a doctor." "Seriously?" I ask with my eyebrow raised. "Don't be so judgmental, it's not a good look on you." He says quietly, but sincerely and I can feel my face heating because he's right. "I'm sorry, that was rude of me." He nods, like he accepts my apology and then continues to tell me about this doctor. "He's a fully fledged doctor, he works at the local hospital in the emergency department. He'll be able to handle whatever is going on." "And what if he also wants you to go to the hospital? Would you at least consider it then?" "Yeah, sure thing Firefly. If doc tells me to go, I'll consider it." His voice trails off, and I'm worried that he is losing consciousness when we are pulling into a huge parking lot and everything starts to get chaotic again. Luke and a bunch of other men are taking James inside, and next thing I know Raven and I are waiting in a room for her to be checked over, and for an update on James. Luke brings their doctor to check out Raven, and after he tells her that he has to go to the hospital because they've taken James there. Raven is making no secret of the fact that she doesn't want to go. But when Luke yells at her that James might die, I can tell she'll go. He tells me I don't have to stay, but when he said that James might die, it felt like my heart stopped beating for a minute. It's insane, but this man has some strange hold on me I swear. Once we get to the hospital and finally find out that James is going to be okay, a weight is lifted off my shoulders. I also manage to convince Raven that she should stay with Luke tonight so he can keep an eye on her. Although, I kind of feel selfish for doing that since I only said she should because I want to go check on James. And I kind of want to stay here until I know for sure that he'll wake up and be okay. "You sure you want to stay here?" Luke asks me, after he makes sure some of their guys are posted around the hospital. "Yeah, I just want to make sure he's okay." My face turns red when him and Raven give me identical skeptical looks. "Alright, well they said we couldn't stay in his room all night, so they'll probably kick you out at some point. Doc managed to convince security to let a few of the brothers stay in the waiting room. His recovery room is directly across from there. If he wakes up let him know I'll be back first thing in the morning okay?" "Yeah, sure." "Later," he tells me before grabbing Raven's hand. I give them both a nod and then I walk towards James's room. He is sleeping, or I guess maybe knocked out still. Well, actually he must be sleeping since they all waited until he woke up from surgery before taking off. I imagine though, his body is exhausted. I wish he would have let us bring him right to the hospital, it could have saved him from a lot of this happening. I move the chair over and sit beside his bed. I can't help but reach my hand out and run my fingers through his hair again. It's shockingly soft for a man, let alone a man that runs a motorcycle club. I sit there, just watching him, watching his chest move up and down as he breathes, wondering how on earth that sight calms my racing nerves when we've only just met. I'm lost in thought trying to figure out what is going on with me when I startle. I was so in my own head I didn't realize that James was staring at me. "Don't stop," he says, his voice hoarse. "S-stop what?" "My hair," he says, and it takes me a moment to realize that I've stopped running my fingers through his hair. I slowly lift my hand and start to touch it again, feeling a bit uncertain now that he's awake. "Luke said he'd be back first thing in the morning," I tell him quietly. "But some of your guys are in the waiting room, right across from here." I tell him, hoping to fill the awkward silence. Or at least it feels awkward to me. "Good, that's good. So do you know what happened after I got here Firefly?" "Firefly?" "Firefly," he says firmly. "That's the second time you've called me that." "Yeah?" "Yes. Why?" "It didn't take more than two seconds after seeing you to realize you are a light in this f.ucked up world." "There's no way you could know that." I whisper, mostly because it's not true, not even a little bit. "I'm a good judge of character. Anyway, the boys all left, mostly, why are you still here?" "You're our client, I wanted to make sure you're okay." "Oh yeah?" "Yeah, I have a vested interest in making sure you stay alive long enough to pay us," I joke, making him laugh. I don't want to analyze why I stayed. "Well that's mighty noble of you then. Seriously though, I don't want you leaving here by yourself. It's not safe out there, take one of the men in the waiting room with you when you go." "No, you're in more danger than me. Plus I-" "Mr. Collins," the rude doctor from earlier barges in cutting me off. "Glad to see you're awake, now before we begin I need to tell you that you were very lucky you came in when you did. I also need to know what happened to you to cause those injuries and bring you in here." James stares the doctor down until he actually takes a step back. That's when I remember he doesn't know what they told him. "I believe the men already told you, he was hit by a prospect who didn't have a handle on his bike." "I was asking him, not you." He snaps, making James whistle sharply, and get the doctor's attention. "Don't speak to her like that. In fact don't speak to her at all, now tell me what the damage is, and get the f***k out of my room. I'm not pressing charges against the young guy that hit me, it was a mistake." The doctor blanches, but then they start talking about his injuries and I zone out. I shouldn't but it's all a little too familiar, and there's no way I can start panicking in front of James.
