Vincent’s confidence that his wife and daughters would all be tucked up in bed early was soon dashed when during supper they all appeared to perk up and come alive. He suspected it might have something to do with the extra naps they had all enjoyed during the day, and although their company was both pleasant and stimulating, he could not help but concern himself with the problem of what he was going to do if they were still awake when he needed to take up his post. Vincent purposely fed Corinne and Stella copious quantities of wine at supper to help relax them, until Emily made a comment about her papa wanting to get them drunk. He laughed it off, but then both Corinne and Stella started joking about the question, so he backed off, claiming he had not noticed how much they had consumed.
