Life growing up was pretty average for me. It was just my mom, myself, our dog Lucy, and an occasional plant mom felt like killing in a month’s time. I grew up in a rural part of northern California, graduated high school, worked my way through my bachelor’s in animal science, and even made time to date occasionally. It was always just me and her working our way through life though, paid off the house, and what little debts mom still had left over. Finally, we took a trip to Alaska, a dream of my moms for years, to see the northern lights and to say goodbye to one another.
Everything seemed to shift when my mom passed away from stage 4 breast cancer. She had been going strong for 4 years and always kept a smile, but a part of me knew she only needed to see me settled and watch me get my diploma before she would be ok to leave me. Lucy our beagle had already left us a year prior so after finalizing the arraignments for my mother’s funeral I felt more lost and alone then I ever had in my entire life.
As fate would have it not long after an old college friend got in contact with me and offered a position at her family-owned animal hospital in Great Falls, Montana. With nothing keeping me in California I accepted with the excuse that I needed a change in scenery, one that didn’t remind me of my mom, Lucy, or the many plants that had been overwatered to death.
I was completely unprepared for what Montana had in store for me.
