Ragna was desperate to prove that she isn't a chaotic hazard; she challenged the academy’s most arrogant, infuriatingly flawless spell instructor, Brynjar Helle, to a magical duel.

During the duel, she mispronounced a syllable, leading to Brynjar turning from a handsome man into a great grey owl. A very loud, annoying owl with an endless list of complaints.

With this, Ragna Fjellström’s time at the prestigious Alberich Magic Academy is hanging by a thread; expelled in disgrace and bound by a curse that ties their magical cores together, Ragna and the feathery dictator are forced to embark on a grueling trek across the frozen Norwegian wilderness. Their destination?

A mysterious, shifting inn hidden deep in the enchanted woods, rumored to house an ancient witch who can reverse the hex.

But as they navigate treacherous blizzards, unpredictable magical guests, and an owl who absolutely refuses to admit he needs a student's help, Ragna begins to realize the botched spell wasn't an accident; it was premeditated.

Chapter 1
Ragna's POV "Your wrist is lazy, your core is entirely unengaged, and your pronunciation is an embarrassment to the magical arts," Brynjar snapped, his voice slicing through the howling wind. He didn't even raise his voice. He never had to. Brynjar Helle was, without a single doubt, the most insufferable man to ever walk the frost-bitten grounds of the Alberich Magic Academy. He stood tall and entirely unbothered by the freezing temperature, dressed in his immaculate, dark-tailored instructor’s cloak. His icy, pale blonde hair was swept back flawlessly, with sharp, aristocratic features and a jawline that looked like it could cut glass; he was objectively terrifying. He was also, infuriatingly, the most beautiful man I had ever seen, a fact that only made me hate him more. The weeping third-year student scrambled away, leaving Brynjar standing alone in the center of the training ring. He let out a long, slow exhale, his breath pluming in the air, and pinched the bridge of his nose as if existing in the same courtyard as the rest of us was a physical burden. Now or never, Ragna, I told myself. My fingers were trembling, hidden deep within the pockets of my slightly singed leather traveling cloak. My academic record was already bad. Three blown-up cauldrons, a shattered greenhouse, and a levitation spell that had accidentally dropped the deputy headmaster into the fjord. I was one incident away from permanent expulsion. I needed to prove that my magic wasn't just raw, chaotic garbage, but that I could control it against the best. And Brynjar was the best. I stepped off the covered walkway and crunched into the snow. "At least the kid managed to conjure something that didn't put the entire courtyard to sleep, Professor!" My voice echoed off the ancient stone walls. The surrounding groups of students instantly went dead silent. Heads turned toward me. Brynjar slowly lowered his hand. He turned to face me, his perfectly rigid posture shifting just a fraction. His eyes, intense golden-hazel, locked onto mine. I felt the impact of that stare all the way down to my boots. It was the same look he gave me in the classroom right before he tore my theories to shreds. "Ragna Fjellström," he said, calling out the syllables of my name with disgust. "I see you’ve managed to dress yourself today without setting your own cloak on fire. Progress." A few students snickered. My jaw tightened, pulling at the faint scar along my cheekbone. I pushed the insecurity down and marched straight into the center of the dueling ring. "I’m initiating a Rite of Provection," I said loudly, ensuring every single student in the courtyard heard me. "A formal challenge. Right here. Right now." Brynjar stared at me. He didn’t laugh, though I could see the muscle in his jaw ticking. He took three long strides forward, stopping mere inches from me. He was so much taller, forcing me to tilt my head back to maintain eye contact. Up close, he smelled like expensive parchment. The sheer physical proximity of him sent a sudden, traitorous spike of heat straight through my chest. My heart kicked hard against my ribs. "Do not make a fool of yourself, Ragna," he murmured. "You are a hazard. A chaotic menace who cannot even control a basic spark without risking a detonation. I will not humor a temper tantrum." "Are you declining, Professor?" I whispered back, refusing to step away, refusing to let him intimidate me. "Because according to Article Four of the Academy Bylaws, an instructor who declines a student's formal challenge in public is making an admission of magical inferiority. You forfeit your rank." His golden eyes darkened. The air between us became static. I could feel his magic pressing against my skin, precise and overwhelmingly powerful. He dropped his gaze to my mouth for a second before snapping it back up to my ice-blue eyes. "Fine," Brynjar said softly. He stepped back, shrugging off his heavy outer cloak and letting it fall to the snow, revealing a fitted black tunic that hugged his broad shoulders. "But I am ending this in ten seconds. I suggest you tell your friends to have the healers on standby." "I don't have friends," I shot back, dropping my own cloak and raising my hands. "And I don't need healers." "Begin," he said, not even bothering to take a defensive stance. I didn't wait. I pulled from the chaotic well of magic in my chest, feeling the familiar, terrifying rush of raw energy. I shoved my hands forward, shouting the incantation for a concussive blast. “Val-Torus!” A massive wave of rippling, pressurized air erupted from my palms, tearing up the snow and cracking the flagstones as it hurled toward him. Brynjar didn't flinch. He casually flicked his wrist. A wall of solid, glittering ice violently erupted from the ground, absorbing my blast with a deafening c***k. Before the ice dust even settled, he retaliated. He didn't speak. He just pointed two fingers. Three spears of compressed wind shot through the smoke, screaming toward my chest. I threw myself to the right, hitting the hard, icy ground and rolling as the spears shattered the stone wall behind me. "Sloppy, Fjellström!" he barked, his voice echoing in my ears. "You rely on brute force because you lack discipline!" I scrambled to my feet, my blood filled with adrenaline. He was already casting again, his hands moving in a blur of flawless, sickeningly perfect technique. A barrage of kinetic strikes rained down on me. I threw up a hastily constructed shield. The impact forced me down to one knee, the sheer weight of his magic threatening to crush my bones. I ground my teeth, glaring at him through the translucent barrier. He was entirely unfazed, walking slowly toward me, keeping the pressure up with one hand. He was trying to humiliate me, to force me to yield in front of the whole academy. No. I dropped the shield, letting the kinetic force clip my shoulder. Pain flared, but I used the momentum to spin, channeling every ounce of frustration, every sneer, every time he had made me feel entirely worthless in his classroom directly for his chest, going for the simplest spell in the curriculum. A disarming hex. “Våpenløs” All it required was a sharp burst of focused energy to knock the opponent off their feet and sever their connection to their core for sixty seconds. I pulled the magic up, shaping the word in my mind. But as I reached for the power, I felt the familiar, terrifying slip. My magic didn't flow. It flooded. The syllable twisted on my tongue. Panic seized my throat. I tried to pull it back and tried to sever the connection, but it was too late. The magic ripped from my core, tearing through my veins like boiling acid. It wasn't a clean, invisible burst of kinetic force; a torrent of blinding silver and pitch-black energy exploded from my hands. The courtyard was filled with a horrific, strobe-like flash of dark light. The air pressure instantly vanished, sucking the breath from my lungs. For a split second, Brynjar’s mask of arrogant perfection broke. His golden eyes went wide with genuine shock. He raised both arms, attempting to summon a high-tier ward, but my chaotic, twisted magic shattered his defense instantly. The silver and black energy engulfed him completely. The resulting explosion was catastrophic. The shockwave picked me up and threw me backward. I slammed into the stone pillar of the covered walkway, with air rushing out of my lungs in a violent gasp. Screams erupted from the sidelines as students scrambled for cover, shielding their faces from the shrapnel of ice and stone. I collapsed onto the snow, clutching my ribs, blurry. My ears were ringing so loudly I could barely hear the wind. The center of the courtyard was completely obscured by a thick, churning cloud of black smoke and pulverized snow. "Professor!" someone screamed in the distance. I pushed myself up onto my hands and knees, my heart lodging itself in my throat. The silver scar on my jaw was burning like a hot brand. My hands shook violently. What did I do? What did I just do? "Brynjar!" I choked out, the formality completely forgotten in my absolute terror. The wind howled, slowly dragging the heavy black smoke away from the blast crater. My eyes darted frantically, looking for his tall silhouette, looking for the flash of his blonde hair. But nothing. Instead, a pile of his dark instructor’s robes lay in a heap on the scorched stone. My stomach plummeted. I tried to stand, stumbling forward. "No. No, no, no." Before I could reach the crater, the pile of robes suddenly shifted. I froze. A wave of relief washed over me; he was alive. He was moving. But as the last of the smoke cleared, the figure pulling itself out from beneath the black fabric wasn't a twenty-seven-year-old aristocratic spell instructor. It was a…..
