CHAPTER 2

*Aphrodite’s P.O.V.*       I stared at him, debating whether I should tell him. “My… my aunt,” I finally admitted.     “The witch who killed most of your birth pack and kidnapped you?” he asked.     I sighed and nodded. “How much did Eros tell you?” I asked.     “He told me your aunt wanted your mom’s mate. She tried to use dark magic to break their bond, but it didn’t work. So, she used it to create a rogue pack that killed most of your pack, including your mom and dad. The survivors disappeared to an undisclosed destination and have slowly been building up a new pack.     “He said you two were never declared rogue, and that’s why your pack mark never disappeared. That you only smell rogue because you’ve been around them for so long.”     I nod. “But… he didn’t…” I sighed. “He didn’t tell you who our parents are. Or rather, who my mother was.”     “No…” he said slowly.     “My mom, Aaliyah, was the second daughter of the Queen of the witches. The first, my aunt Ariadne, took over as Queen with her mate, Xavier as King. My other Aunt, Aurora, was the third and youngest daughter.”     “Xavier… Xavier Adolpha? Future Alpha of the Quarter Moon pack?”     “Now King of the Witch Council.”     “How does Ariadne feel about her sister using dark magic and all that she has been doing to her niece and nephew?”     “Aunt Ariadne has been hunting for Aunt Aurora for over a decade. It appeared that she got close many times, because we moved quite a few times and every time we did, Aunt Aurora would curse her name,” I answered.     He pursed his lips together, and I could tell he wanted to ask me something more.     “Go ahead, ask me.”     He looked at me, conflicted. Finally, “how did you escape?”     “We were moving again. Aunt… I mean Aurora, had stopped keeping us chained, but she was beating us, trying to beat us into submission. I had begun to gain strength from my wolf since we were no longer chained in silver, and it had been a while since I was dosed with wolfsbane…     “They were moving us, taking us to the car. No one else was there as they had already begun moving. Since we weren’t chained, Eros and I attacked the four guards. I managed to kill two of them and Eros knocked out the other two, but he was drained, and I could tell. Then I shifted as quickly as possible, had Eros climb me, and we ran.     “It took a while to shift, since I had only shifted once. Because of this, we only had a 30-minute head start. After about 30 minutes, I knew the two Eros had knocked out were chasing us. I felt when we crossed your border, and I knew they wouldn’t dare try to cross without backup.”     “And you think eventually that they’ll bring backup and that’s what your vision was?” he inquired.     “I… I honestly don’t know. It was a full out battle. And Aurora was there. She… she wouldn’t come just to kidnap me again, I don’t think.”     “What do you think her goal is?”     “Oh, I know it’s to take down the Queen and King of the Witches. She talked about it frequently with no shame.”     Zyaire looked at me but said nothing for another moment. “What do you think it means, that you appeared to have won with me by your side?”     I groaned inwardly. “Zyaire… you need to realize how much danger you all are in if we stay here…”     “We might be in danger, but you are my mate and their rightful Luna. Just like you are trying for them, they would defend you with their life. They would stand beside you and fight for you because that’s what a pack does.”     “But if you aren’t there, then you’re safe. My mate would be safe.”     “Then who were the wolves fighting for you in the first part? Were they not this pack?”     “I… I don’t know. I saw a blonde hair, blue eyed guy dead and a brown hair, green eyed guy, too.”     “Zaydon and Zayne. My Beta and Gamma. So, it was my pack. Maybe it was to tell us to stay together. I think you are supposed to accept me, but that was a warning for us to stay together.”     “I… I don’t want you to get hurt because of me.”     “Aphrodite, I am your mate. I am here to protect, love, and cherish you. We are meant to be together, to fight together. If I get hurt, it isn’t your fault. It’s no one’s fault, except maybe Aurora’s. But with you by my side, it appears I won’t get hurt,” he gave me a cheesy grin.     I couldn’t help but to return the grin, staring at his beautiful features: his unruly black hair, his Hiddenite green eyes, how crystal clear they were, and his droopy but squishy tipped nose. My eyes landed on his plump lips… how kissable and soft they looked… I sighed and I instinctively licked my lips and then chewed my bottom lip.     His Hiddenite eyes landed on my lips, I heard a low growl come from Zyaire, it was something in between lustful and protective. He began to lean in, his eyes darkening by the second. I found my body leaning in towards him though I couldn’t remember telling my body to do so.     Our lips connected and his lips moved on mine, and I began to move mine naturally. I could feel the sparks, and it felt like electricity originating from the kiss traveling throughout my body, and I shivered in pleasure and gasped at the same time. As I gasped, I felt his tongue push into my mouth, and our tongues began to dance, fighting for dominance.     At that moment, I knew without a doubt that I needed, wanted, and loved my mate. I sighed into the kiss in blissful pleasure.     And the next moment, the door burst open. We both jerked apart, me groaning in annoyance and Zyaire growling. Then we both glanced at the door to find a panting well-built blonde hair, blue eyed man standing in the doorway, panic on his face. I recognized him from my vision, so he must be Zaydon or Zayne.     “Woah, talk to me, Zaydon. What’s wrong?” Zyaire was standing now, his tone serious, he was now in Alpha mode.     “Attack… Rogues… Northern… border….” Zaydon panted out.     “Zyaire, if they’re from Aurora, they’re going to be stronger than the average rogue,” I said so quickly that it sounded like a blur to me.     Zyaire nodded and his eyes clouded over, he must be mind linking someone, before returning to their beautiful crystal-clear Hiddenite color.     Soon, a brown hair, chocolate caramel-eye colored man with a black suit and white lab coat appeared behind Zaydon.     “Dr. Viotto, please take your future Luna to the bunker.” Zyaire commanded, and the doctor nodded.     The doctor, Dr. Viotto, grabbed a wheelchair and picked me up, placing me in it before wrapping me in a blanket.     At the same time, Zyaire eyes were clouded over, but then they returned to normal. “I sent out a massive mind link to not underestimate these rogues because they may be controlled by dark magic. I gotta go. I’ll see when this is over.”     “Please be careful,” I told him, my eyes welling with tears. Damn, did I love this man already? I think so.     His eyes softened, and he smiled. “Always am,” he said before giving me a peck on my cheek before striding out of the room quickly. “Zaydon, come on.”     “Yes, Alpha,” Zayden replied.     Dr. Viotto began to wheel me very quickly down a few hallways and out of the packhouse, then he turned down a hallway guarded by four men, warriors that led to the dungeon.     He passed the dungeon, turned left down a very short hallway that had a decorative glass table with a vase of flowers on it. He stopped at a dead end. He tapped a small rectangular piece of wood and it moved aside to reveal a keypad.     He punched in a couple numbers and the dead-end wall opened outward to us. I gasped as Dr. Viotto quickly wheeled me inside, and I watched as the wall slide quickly closed.     “I have to carry you from here. It’s a lot of steps,” he warned, and I nodded in understanding.     He picked me up bridal style and carried me down a long, winding staircase illuminated by lightly dimmed sconces. As we reached the bottom, the area opened into a wide-open space. It was illuminated by lamps and overhead lights with no windows.     Straight ahead lay a 10’ x 10’ boxed-in plush carpeted area with toys scattered about. There were probably 20 toddlers playing in that area.     Directly to the left of that was a gap of about 8 feet was another 10’ x 10’ boxed-in plush carpeted area with about 10 infants. They were standing and walking, sitting up and playing with toys, or laying on a mat with toys dangling above them or on their bellies on a mat with toys in front of them.     Couches lined three of the sides of each play area. There were about fifteen more couches scattered about facing TVs and different games such as ping-pong, air hockey, pool, arcade games, and more. There were multiples of each type of game.     Five large dining tables and a large kitchen made up the entire right size. I also noticed the five bathrooms to the far left on the wall that we entered through. On the far-left wall was a large bookcase filled with books of varying topics.     Dr. Viotto carried me to a couch facing the infant play pen and sat me down. He helped re-cover me in a way that I’d be able to use my hands and handed me a notebook.     “That’s a checklist of who should be here. I want you to start calling names out and as soon as someone enters you ask their name, if you can’t find their name, not including your brother and yourself, or they refused to answer, then some of the warriors are down here, and they can mind link the ones upstairs.”     I nod and begin calling out names, checking off who has arrived, and as people enter and give their names, I check those off, too, before they can go do their own thing.   *Zyaire’s P.O.V.*       As soon as I left Aphrodite’s hospital room, Zaydon tried to talk to me about her, but I growled immediately, effectively shutting him up.     We ran down the hallways out of the ICU and through the hospital towards the packhouse. Once we broke through the hospital doors that led into the packhouse, we ran for the front door. We swung the doors open a little too hard, but I didn’t care. These rogues and that witch were not going to get my mate.     I felt an energy like I have never felt before, and I briefly wondered if it was from my kiss with Aphrodite. I leapt off the front porch, shifting in midair as I let Blaze take over. I shook my large head as I ran away from the pack house and towards the territory gate. Blaze and I work as one, our paws hitting the ground with a thud, and we run as fast as we can.     To be honest, I’m quite shocked because Blaze and I have never been able to work as one and exist in the body at the same time. But I quickly push the thought aside, making a mental note to address it later.     We start sniffing the air and cringe: the scent of sewage, death, and decay fills our nostrils as we run towards the cause.     As we get near the gate opening, another scent hits my nostrils, but I can’t quite place it. I ignore it and jump into the fight. There seems to be about 50 rogues but 100 of us joining in, so we have the upper hand.     I lunge at one of the two rogues attacking Olive, another one of our Junior Deltas. The rogue was caught off-guard and snarls at me, regaining his footing before turning to face me. We face off for a minute before I realize he’s not going to make the first move.     My gaze sweeps over his body, and I notice he’s favoring his left front leg. I feign like I’m going for his right leg, and he snaps at empty air as I actually grab his left leg, biting down. I hear it crack and he whimpers in pain.     I jump back before he can grab me in his jaws. He lunges for me but faulters, falling to the ground. I jump on his back and snap his neck in between my huge jaws. He falls lifeless on the ground.     I want on of them alive! I send out a massive mind link to all my warriors fighting before zoning in on one of three rogues surrounding River.     I launch myself at one, sending it flying into a tree with a cracking sound where in falls to the ground. She stands up and zones in on me this time, and River sends a thank you to me. I run the rogue I launched into the tree and swipe my huge paw across her face before she can even get up, leaving gashes and knocking her unconscious.     A howl fills the air and I look around to see that the rest of the rogues have been dispatched. A chorus of howls join in, and I do, too.     Zaydon, Zayne, Cassius, and Axel, take this she-wolf to the dungeon. No medical care, I order them.     Yes, Alpha, they respond and immediately run over to me.     I notice three of our own injured on the ground. Cannon, Titus, Roman, Zion, Deacon, Braylen, Cooper, and Rowan, and Dorian, get the three injured to the hospital.     Yes, Alpha!     I ran to a lock box at the edge of the woods near the packhouse, shifted, and got dressed before walking quickly towards the packhouse and bunker.     I tapped the piece of wood and entered the code and the wood slid open to reveal the bunker. I walked down the winding staircase into the open. Aphrodite’s eyes landed on me, and a smile spread across her face.     “Zyaire!” she exclaimed happily, and I felt a grin spread across my face. She was holding an infant, not more than a month old, rocking her in a rocking chair. The parents were standing nearby with smiles on their faces.     “I see you’ve made an impression on some of the pack members,” I tell her as I make my way over to her, and she nods. “The danger is over! Everyone is free to go about their business as usual!” I announce, and pack members start leaving, some with their pups.     “This is baby Kaleigh. She’s 6 weeks old and just the cutest thing. Those are her parents, Drake and Deanna.”     They bow to me and ask for Kaleigh back so we can talk. Aphrodite hands her over.     “She’s a natural. We couldn’t get her to stop crying even after feeding and changing her. She wouldn’t go to sleep. Luna Aphrodite asked if she could try, and as soon as she took her, she fell asleep!” Deanna said.     I smiled at them, and Aphrodite grinned again before they walked away with their still sleeping pup.     “It’s time to go back to the hospital to see what Dr. Vi says. I’m going to carry you,” I warn her, and she grins once again. I swoop her up bridal style and climb the stairs. She sighs in content and lays her head on my chest, her eyes closing as she takes deep breaths.     “You smell like… fresh rain and pine,” Aphrodite comments.     “Really? You smell like mahogany, snow, and maple.”     “Hmmm,” she sighs in content again as I walk through the hospital doors. I walk to the same room she was in before and lay her down in bed, covering her with a sheet and blanket.     “Tell me about the attack,” she says suddenly.     “There were about 50 rogues. I knocked one unconscious; she’s in the dungeon. The rest were killed. We had three injuries on our side, but no deaths. They appeared to be regular rogues, but I can’t say for sure whether Aurora was behind it or not.”     “She probably was. She doesn’t always enhance them, just uses magic to control them into doing her bidding. Did you smell her?”     “I…” I paused as I thought. “I smelled an odd scent, but I can’t say for sure what it was. I only saw rogues.”     “What did it smell like?” she asked me.     I thought back to the scent. “I could smell anger and felt dark energy.”     “That was Aurora. She’s angry you have us. And she always feels like dark energy because she’s a dark witch.”     “You were with her for so long, but you don’t feel dark,” I told her.     “Because I refused to change to the dark side. She tried to break Eros and me. But we refused to do her bidding. But once she knew we wouldn’t run, that’s when she let her guard down and let us be out of the chains.”     Aphrodite looked at me before her eyes went completely black again. It felt like forever before they returned to their normal amethyst color.     I looked at her expectantly as she shook her head to rid her brain of the images she saw.
