Whatever sarcasm was playing on Edrick's face vanished like smoke and was replaced with the look everyone knew him with, anger. Why was he angry even though he couldn't explain? “I asked you a question, Vicky, and you will answer me,” he said coldly. “It was fine and yes I looked magnificent according to your mum, now can I go?” Victoria said, frustrated. “We are getting married on Saturday. I can't wait for next week or two weeks later, I need that married status immediately. I've told everyone including your friend Lily. You are the last person to know about this. “What?! On Saturday? Why? I just told you why, you should be smart Victoria, listen when I am talking to you. Victoria was starkly frozen on her feet. She was trying to understand what he just said, and before she knew it she was shedding tears, painful tears. “For heaven’s sake Victoria why are you crying? Edrick said when he noticed she was crying. “How could you do this to me? First, you threw a contract marriage at me, and now you change things the way you want. Is it because I am an orphan and I don’t have any family to run to? Have you forgotten I am human? Have you ever thought of me for once or how I feel? I am not some robot you can do whatever you please with,” Victoria said angrily, tears streaming down her face. Edrick looked at her with no emotion on his face and left the sitting room. After he left, Victoria rushed to her room, locked the door, and started crying until she finally succumbed to a deep sleep. Victoria slept without waking until the next morning. She woke up very early and prepared for work. After a few hours, she was ready and left her room for breakfast. She met Edrick in the dining room and greeted him. “Good morning,” she said. Edrick looked up at her. He remembered she hadn’t had dinner yesterday because of how he treated her, and a part of him regretted making her cry. But seeing her as a threat was something he did not understand. The way she walked, talked, and behaved was getting to him in a way no other woman had. This girl was different. Victoria finished her meal a few minutes later. She was about to leave the house when she heard Edrick’s voice. “You are not a robot, you’re a very beautiful and smart woman, but am not the right man for you because I can’t give you the love and attention you need, but I need you to give me what I want for now, do this with me, okay? Victoria was surprised and she felt the feeling of not being afraid of him because she didn’t see a monster as she looked into his eyes at the moment, she nodded her head and left the house. On her way to work, she received a call from her mother-in-law, Elizabeth. “Hello, darling.” “Good morning, Mrs. Elizabeth.” “My dear, I have great news for you. I hope you are free today because we are going for the cake testing,” Elizabeth said excitedly. Victoria was stunned. Why wouldn’t Edrick allow her to at least take care of the wedding cake, since that’s her specialty? She responded to her mother-in-law, explaining that they should reschedule because she had something important to take care of today. Elizabeth understood her and didn’t ask what she needed to do. “Alright dear,” Elizabeth said warmly before ending the call. She got to work a few minutes later and went straight to her office. Lily followed her and saw that she wasn’t very happy. She didn’t bother to ask her what was wrong because she knew it could be either Edrick or the marriage, so she decided not to ask. Instead, she spoke about work.” She left work very early that day because she needed to discuss the wedding cake issue with Edrick. When she got home, the nanny greeted her. “Good evening, Madam Victoria,” Selina greeted. “Is Edrick home?” “Yes, ma’am. He is in his study.” Victoria hurriedly entered his study and found Edrick reading a book. He looked up, surprised to see someone entering without knocking. “Don’t you know how to knock?”Edrick said. “Am Sorry for barging in, but I need to discuss something very important with you. Can you at least allow me to handle the wedding cake? It would mean a lot to me,” she said calmly. Edrick looked at her intently, he could see the sincerity in her eyes. “Alright, I will trust you with this,” he said finally. Victoria was very happy to hear this, “thank you” she said and left the study. FEW DAYS LATER The days flew by, and before Victoria knew it, the day of her bridal shower had arrived, organized with meticulous care by her friend Lily. It was a lavish affair, filled with friends both old and new, many of whom Victoria hadn’t even known existed until now. As she entered the beautifully adorned venue, Victoria couldn’t help but marvel at Lily’s effort to make her happy and distract her from the fact that her marriage was merely a contract. The room shimmered with soft lights and delicate floral arrangements, creating an atmosphere of joy and celebration. Lily led Victoria through the crowd, introducing her to each new friend with a sparkle of mischief in her eyes. Laughter and chatter filled the air as stories were shared and games were played. Victoria felt a warmth in her heart, grateful for the love and support surrounding her. Despite the partying, Victoria felt nervous. Some of the attendees appeared overly interested in her, with their gazes lingering too long. She exchanged inquiring glances with Lily, who looked to perceive her discomfort but dismissed it with a reassuring grin. Victoria moved closer to Lily and asked, "Where did you find all of these ladies?" “Some of them are friends from college while the rest are friends of friends”, Lily replied Lily noticed Victoria was not satisfied with her response so she went further and gave her reassurance to ease her mind. "You don't have to worry about them, they are only here to have fun," Lily reassured her. "Alright then." After the bridal shower ended at midnight, everyone returned to their different rooms to prepare for the big day tomorrow. Victoria was unable to find some sleep, so she went outside to get some fresh air. As she went along the beach, lost in concentration, she observed a solitary man sitting with a drink in his hand: Edrick. She stood there and watched him for a while. He appeared calm and comfortable, as opposed to his usual cold demeanour. She got closer to him and called out to him. “Edrick?” Victoria’s voice cut through the quiet night. He turned, surprised to see her.” “What are you doing out here by yourself? You should be resting,” he said, his tone soft yet guarded. “I couldn’t sleep,” Victoria admitted, meeting his gaze steadily. “Go inside and rest. Tomorrow will be a long day for you,” Edrick replied calmly, brushing past her to return to his suite.
