SAMANTHA The whispers that followed as we both walked in was something I would be lying if I said I didn't expect it. “Who's that beside Princess Elara? She’s new,” “Yeah, I’ve never seen her around here before,” another muttered. “She's gorgeous,” they whispered and I was beginning to feel uncomfortable with the stares. “Lovely. Seems like you are stealing the show tonight,” Elara remarked. “Sorry. I didn't think everyone would pay this much attention to me,” I sighed as I tilted my head in exhaustion. Just walking through a crowd of nobles staring at me had drained me. “You're kidding, right? I dressed you up for this exact purpose, honey,” she said with a proud expression. “Besides, there's absolutely no way you wouldn't have been noticed. Your looks are a bit too unique,” she said. She did have a point though. I had never seen anyone with rainbow eyes except for my family and the combination of those eyes and my pink hair wasn't exactly helping. s**t! I just hope that nobody will pick my heritage up using my hair and eye color. If not, I’ll be in big trouble. “Where's Harold?” I asked about her husband. “Given that Conrad hasn't arrived, we won't be able to meet him till he is announced,” she answered. “Princess Elara, I didn't think you'd come given how much you despise social events,” two girls walked up to us. “It's Lady Elara to you,” Elara forced a smile. “Oh, that's true. I seem to often forget that your father gave up his throne for his younger brother,” one of them laughed. This was the classic word play of the elites. It was obvious they were taunting her. Elara's father, the Grand Duke was the rightful Alpha and heir but he had no interest in being at the forefront and so gave his title and right to his younger brother who was just as capable. Even the royal family of White Claw pack was enviable. This could never happen in my pack - Moon Stone pack. “And who's that with you? She completely outshone you,” they referred to me. They were beginning to get on my nerves. “I can't believe you let a maid outshine you. You know, you're too nice for your own good,” the other said. “Maids should remain maids, you need to stop treating them well,” they glared at me. “I might be able to ignore you but she won't,” Elara had a crooked smile on her lips. She was indeed worried about how I would react seeing how they attacked the both of us. She knew me too well. I’ve never been one to be bullied. My father did not raise me to be a weakling. He would hit me himself if he finds out that I let others bully me. “You really think that with my looks, I would be a maid?” I scoffed. “You must be highly delusional to think that I would even pass as a maid,” I linked arms with Elara. “Let's go.” If I stay for even one minute longer, I might be tempted to slam their faces against a hard object. “Excuse me??” One of them sputtered in rage as we tried to walk past them. “Better hold your fiance tight, my friend might just steal them,” Elara told one of them with a smirk as we walked away. Once we got to a quieter place, I heaved a sigh of relief. I surely didn't come here to bicker but I hate girls like this. “Why do you let them talk to you like that? Your position is higher than theirs so they have no right!” I was so freaking angry on her behalf. Elara but the inside of her mouth, “I don’t just have the energy for them,” “Well, you better find the energy to put them in their place or I will,” I saw a smile pulling at the side of her lips and rolled my eyes. Alpha Conrad was announced soon enough. I felt my breath catch in my throat as I watched him walk inside. He was tall and very handsome with blonde hair and forest green eyes. He oozed authority from every pores of his being. The airs around him would make any regular man bow in reverence. His gold colored robe fitted him properly and hugged his well toned body. Conrad gave a brief speech which I was not even paying full attention to as my eyes kept roaming down his body for a reason I could not understand. He seemed more composed than Elara had originally described him. “I know what you're thinking but trust me when I say, he's just as crazy as I described,” she whispered to me. “We were raised like siblings since we're close in age and he has always had a screw loose somewhere,” she shrugged and I gave a little laugh at her description of him. Harold came down the stairs and spotted us immediately. He kissed Elara briefly and seeing how in love they were reminded me how terribly single and alone I was. “You're here too, Sam?” He finally turned to address me. “I guess,” I smiled awkwardly. “I didn't think you'd come given how you've been cooped up at home,” he remarked. “How did you…” “Ah, Elara kept texting me about everything that was going on while I stayed at the palace,” he scratched his face. “Honey, why don't we join the couple dance?” She tried to evade the situation as much as possible. “But…” “Sam, it's fine if we step on the dance floor for a while right?” She said without looking at me. “Y-yes, I guess,” I wasn't a child after all even if she was some years older. “Alright. Have fun,” she quickly dragged Harold off to the dance floor leaving me alone. I stood there alone, sipping from my drink. I considered looking at Alpha Conrad once more but he was gone by the time I looked up again. “Maybe I should use this opportunity to socialize a bit,” I sighed and turned to observe my environment but to my surprise, nearly everyone seemed to have been paired. The champagne flute felt cold in my palm as I felt sick to my stomach. Everywhere I looked, there were couples holding hands, laughing, discussing, dancing and eating. It was sickening having to watch so much display of affection and it reminded me of the one thing I wanted to forget most. I had come to this banquet to try and clear my head but I regret stepping out of the house. My heart throbbed and my lips quivered as I did my best to control my tears. I couldn't cry on such an occasion and make Elara worry about me. She’s already worried enough as it is. I grabbed the skirt of my gown and stepped out onto the balcony to get fresh air. I needed to get away from all the happenings in the main hall. To think that just two days ago, we were a couple. Nothing seemed real anymore and I couldn't even tell who I hated more - Clarence or Zachariah. I rest my head against the railing to catch my breath. “You need to get yourself together, Sam,” I muttered to myself before dabbing my tears. So glad I wore waterproof makeup, I would have been a disaster. I left the balcony and chose to give myself a tour of the palace. I actually wanted something more than fresh air. “There should be a garden somewhere,” I muttered as I looked around hoping that I wouldn't get lost. Finally spotting a garden, I walked into it and my ears quickly picked up odd noises. Was that the sound of moaning I was hearing?
