Chapter 6 – The Garden Confession
The garden was a haven compared to the glittering ballroom. The soft rustle of leaves in the night breeze and the faint fragrance of blooming roses created a sanctuary for them both. Zane led her to a bench beneath an arch of ivy, and they sat with a space between them that felt both intimate and necessary.
Zendaya stared at her hands, twisting her fingers nervously. I… I didn’t expect to feel this way tonight. After everything with Alex… Her voice broke, a whisper against the night.
Zane’s gaze softened, and he reached out, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. Forget him. This isn’t about him. This is about you… and me. For tonight, let the rest of the world fade away.
Her heart thundered, and she felt tears prick the corners of her eyes. She had never known a presence so commanding yet so… gentle. The dichotomy terrified her. I don’t know if I deserve this, she admitted, voice trembling.
Deserve? He repeated, disbelief lacing his tone. You don’t need to deserve it. You only need to accept it.
She looked up, meeting his piercing blue eyes, and in them, she saw honesty, raw and unfiltered. No games. No pretense. Just him, standing there, offering her something she hadn’t known she needed. Something she had given up hoping for.
I ran away to this party, she confessed, her voice barely audible. To escape… everything. My family, my heartbreak, my life in Darkmoon Park. I needed space to breathe, to think, to feel… peace.
Zane’s jaw tightened. Then you shall have it. But not alone. He paused, and she realized he was weighing the consequences of what he was about to say. I will go with you. Wherever you go, I will be there. No harm will touch you while I am near.
Her chest tightened, the weight of his words pressing against her ribs. The thought of having him by her side, unwavering, filled her with a warmth she had thought was lost forever.
But what about your pack? She asked cautiously. Your responsibilities…
He shrugged, a faint smirk tugging at his lips. They will understand. They have always known that I answer to my instincts… and this is one of them.
Zendaya leaned back slightly, letting the breeze wash over her face, absorbing the reality of it all. She had wanted to escape, to find peace, and in the strangest, most unpredictable way, she had found it. With him.
I… I need to go back soon, she admitted. My parents, my brothers. They’ll worry if I’m gone too long. I want you to come with me, to meet them… will you go with me?
He lifted his hand, brushing it against hers. I will. Let’s face your world together. I want to know everything about you, Zendaya Schmidt. And I will protect you.
Her breath caught. That name, spoken by him, felt like a promise. A declaration.
They sat together in silence, listening to the wind, letting the night embrace them. Outside, the masquerade continued, but for the first time, neither of them cared. They had found something neither expected. Something undeniable. Something that would change everything.
And as the first stars shimmered above, Zane realized that for the first time in his life, someone had the power to change him. To soften the edges. To make him… feel.
And Zendaya realized that, for the first time since her heartbreak, she wasn’t running from anything. Not from love. Not from destiny. Not from him.
The night stretched on, two hearts quietly tethered by something stronger than fear, stronger than doubt—a bond neither fully understood but would soon have no choice but to embrace.
