“A poison maiden!”
Jade said it as if Scarlet was supposed to know whatever the f**k it meant. But Scarlet had no idea. She knew about vampires, werewolves, witches and some more creatures which weren’t necessarily in Australia.
“What the f**k is a poison maiden? Did you say Vishaa Kaanyaa?” Scarlet tried to pronounce the tongue twister.
Jade nodded.
“I am a poisonous human stuck in time due to the poison in my system. All my body fluids are poisonous, I need poison to survive and any human who comes in contact with me dies, just by my breath of poison.” She grimaced, revisiting memories of choking men and women that she had been assigned to kill.
Scarlet’s mouth was agape as she tried to wrap her head around what Jade was saying.
Jade continued, “I was created to be a Royal weapon. I was separated from my parents when I was 2 years old and fed a diet of poisonous concoctions to convert me into who I am.”
“f*****g hell! What kind of inhumanity was that?” Scarlet ran her hand through her hair.
“Those days all of this was normal. People used to live at the point of a sword. We were 15 chosen girls. Chosen because of some special astrological sequences with which we were born. Only 5 girls survived up to adulthood. I took the life of my first victim when I was only 13 years old.”
“Unbelievable man! How old are you? Where are the other 4 girls? Are there more of you? Tell me all about it. How can I kiss you and not die?” Scarlet was shooting one question after another. She had millions of those.
“Vampires are poisonous beings so I can be with them without any harm to me or them. In fact, they restore my energies,” she winked.
Scarlet could smell her arousal. “Thinking about our kiss babes?”
“Wait, don’t distract me. I need to tell you all about me.” Jade interjected.
“That can wait. We have forever to know each other. For me what matters is that God has finally been kind to me.” Scarlet closed the distance between them and passionately kissed Jade. Her berry scented body consumed Scarlet. She wanted more, a lot more.
A phone rang somewhere. Scarlet cursed and separated herself from Jade. “Girl, you are going to be the end of me. I can’t seem to keep my hands off you.”
“It is the same for me, sweetie. Let me get the phone. It sounds like Jono is trying to get in touch. I have a special ringtone for him,” Jade got up to retrieve her phone from her handbag. It was an expensive looking black clutch which was resting on the kitchen island.
“Hello, big brother, did you miss me?” Jade crooned into the phone making Scarlet smile. She could get used to hearing Jade’s voice.
She couldn’t believe herself, she had found her mate finally. She heard the person at the other end of the phone chide Jade, “please don’t call me that. I am not so old!” That made Jade break out into laughter making Scarlet's chest expand with love. If she had a beating heart she was sure that right now it would be racing.
She could hear the entire conversation of Jade and Jono’s. She wasn’t eavesdropping but she had superhuman hearing abilities and was curious to know more about Jade’s special cousin who also happened to be a vamp.
Jono had called to know when Jade was returning home. He was worried for her as she had been away for a week for the first time in their lives. Jade told him that she would be visiting Myponga for Kirra’s Alpha ceremony and be back in two days.
Jade smoothly left Scarlet out from the talk and instead told him that she wanted to make new connections with the werewolves in the country. She was enjoying getting to know more people after five hundred years of solitary life.
He was very understanding, more than what Scarlet would have been. Scarlet was impressed. Yet she had an uncomfortable feeling in her gut. As if something was incomplete, as if something was not right.
Must have been the fact that she had met her mate while Kirra hadn’t. Kirra would be devastated to know that Scarlet had to move on. Hopefully, with all the young unmated wolves visiting her Alpha ceremony, she would finally find her mate too.
Jade said her goodbyes into the phone and disconnected.
Scarlet still sat on the recliner. Jade walked over to her and sat on her lap with her hands around Scarlet’s neck and feet dangling on one side.
This girl was going to break her resolve, Scarlet swore. “Five hundred years?”
Jade nodded and kissed Scarlet’s neck.
“Bloody hell! You are ancient.” Scarlet rubbed her hand on Jade’s back making her purr.
“Tell me more about you honey. I want to know everything about every moment you spent without me.” Scarlet said peering into her green eyes.
There was a knock at the door.
She looked at the door. “That is Lucas. Can’t two people have some peace and quiet in this place?” Scarlet grumbled.
“Easy my vamp. This is his property and he is my best friend!”
Lucas walked in and saw Jade purring on Scarlet’s lap. His eyes darkened in jealousy. He couldn’t have Jade ever. She batted for the other team and here he was pining for her.
He sighed thinking, what was the use? Even if she loved him he could still never have her. They could never have consummated because of the poison in her system! But how he wanted to taste those luscious lips and stay with his nose dipped in the nape of her neck breathing in her sweet smell of berries.
“Mine,” Scarlet growled in an animalistic sound.
“For a person whose special friendship with Kirra is known by all, aren’t you acting suspiciously with Jade?” Lucas sneered. He did not trust Scarlet. “Does Kirra know about your escapades?”
“Lucas!” Jade snapped. “What has gotten into you?”
“You don’t know Scarlet,” Lucas responded. “For all you know, she would play with you, trample all over your broken heart and leave, to hop back to her current girlfriend!”
“Shut up! Nothing of that sort is going to happen.” Jade sounded agitated when she was defending Scarlet. She got off Scarlet’s lap. Scarlet felt her hesitation.
Lucas smirked. He had known Jade for over two decades now. He knew which buttons to push.
Jade had gone over to the kitchen counter again to refill her glass.
Lucas spoke to Scarlet, “so would you be leaving soon? Jade needs to rest and I have some office work with her after that.”
This time Jade did not respond. Scarlet was annoyed with Lucas’ interference. Why was Jade acting as if she was in a patriarchal system where Lucas was deciding for her? She snarled, “last time I checked, you work for Jade’s company and not the other way round. If she wants me to leave, she will say it. You don’t have to be her mouthpiece.”
“I think Lucas is right, Scarlet. You must leave now. I will meet you tomorrow at Kirra’s party. Lucas will drive me to the venue. “Please let Kirra know about me and let us take it further from there.”
“I will leave if you want me to but I am not meeting Kirra until tomorrow. I want you to be around when I tell her. I want her to know you.” Scarlet walked up to Jade and rested her hands on her shoulder. Looking into her eyes she continued, “promise me you will be safe.”
Jade nodded and Scarlet left.
She headed straight to her house in the Jarrah forest. She had called Jeremy for a meeting and was looking forward to catching up with her human PA.
