Chapter One
CHAPTER ONE
Ethan's POV
I took the opportunity to observe Ava while she was destructed reading the contract.
This weird feeling in my chest keeps intensifying when I continue to stare at her. I just wanted her so far away from me as soon as possible. She is my best friend’s daughter, and these feelings had no business been there in the first place.
The cream blouse she wore complemented her skin so well. Her feet’s barely touch the ground as they jungled freely.
Her brows furrowed as she concentrated on the piece of paper in front of her.
“Is there a problem with the contract”
No. .no, everything is fine” she responded timidly.
I have known Ava since she was thirteen, since her dad Bob and I were best buddies since our college days.
The shy, timid girl hasn’t changed much over the years. She was still timid, but she wasn’t a little girl anymore. The curves that adorned her body were clear indications that she was all woman. Very attractive woman, to say the least.
Her curly hair flowed beautifully down her neck to her shoulder’s.
I watched as she took the pen on the table and began quickly scribbling her signature on all the places she was supposed to.
When Bob had first told me that he would be happy if I had his daughter work in my company, it would put him at ease. I didn’t think much of it and agreed straight away.
Now, I don’t know how I was going to restrain myself from kissing those soft lips.
She passed the paper back to me. I purposefully swipe my fingers across hers as I grab the contract. The spark I felt was foreign, and I noticed she felt it too as her cheeks turned a little pink.
Interesting. It seems our connection wasn’t a one-off.
“When do I start?” She rises from her seat and runs a hand across the length of her skirt.
I drag my eyes away from the curves of her waist to her face.
Monday. Be here at 9 a.m. sharp” My voice came out nonchalantly. A construct to what was actually going on within.
“Thank you for the opportunity. Really, I know my dad can be hardheaded. Sometimes, I don’t plan on letting you down.” I noticed as she cheeks deepened in color as she said those words.
I find her reactions to the simplest things quite interesting.
What else could make her blush this much? A very vivid image of her on her knees, her red lips wrapped around something incredibly inappropriate flickers through my mind.
She’s your best friend’s daughter and soon to be on your payroll. Get yourself together, Ethan!. I frown at the uncontrollable thoughts popping in my mind.
I release a tense breath. “See you on Monday” I dismissed her and tried to get back to the piling workload I had to handle before the day ended.
The door closed silently behind her as she left the office.
I found myself distracted, finding it hard to get back to my work as the thought of her consumed me.
I rung the intercom for my secretary, Martha.
“Sir, you called for me?” Martha asked as she entered the door.
Make sure you onboard her details into our systems as she will be will be joining us next week” I said I handed the documents to her.
“Okay sir, will do that immediately’’ she responded as she turned to take her leave.
I began to speak before she could leave, stopping her in her trucks. “Before I forget, can you bring me a cup of coffee before you resume your work? The usual.
I stared into space as she finally walked out to get back to her duties.
I am the CEO of a multi-million company, Urban-Loom Designs Co, where we design and manufacture furniture’s of all kinds.
My dad started the business in his garage in a small town just outside Memphis. He was a carpenter and a hardworking one at that. I took over the business some few years ago, right after getting out of college. At the time, the company wasn't doing so well, but with a lot of sleepless nights, encouragement from Bob and fee investors, my business is one of the most successful ones in the country. Fourteen years ago was when I first met Bob, freshman year of college. He had taken me under his wing as more of an older brother.
He was much older than me and had had Ava years before deciding to further his education. The two of us had hit it off quite quickly and have been friends ever since.
Bob was a single dad and had always put Ava first in everything he did. The love he has for his daughter is admirable.
Even though I had a degree in marketing, I was a natural designer. Some of our bestselling furniture’s are designed by me.
With the expansion of the company, I had employed more designers.
Martha arrived a few minutes later with the coffee.
“Thanks” I responded as she handed the cup to me.
When I first brought the idea to Bob that I wanted to extend my company and add an interior design department to it, he had said it was a great idea.
Fortunately or unfortunately for me, now that I think about it, Ava had just finished college and was looking for a company to intern in, with her degree in arts and design. Ava had great talent that I couldn’t refute.
She was so excited about the idea of heading the interior design department after having an extensive talk with her dad about how it was going to work out since she was basically inexperienced, with just a degree to her name, her dad had to convince me that she was the best option for me.
Bob and I had always been close. His friendly and ambitious nature had drawn me to him.
With our age gap, I had always regarded him with great respect
Ava was in middle school when Bob had finally taken the initiative to go back to school. His company was flourishing, but he believed that investors would take him more seriously if he had a degree.
With that in mind, he had to balance his school and home life. There were days I had to babysit for him when he had classes to attend.
I had always thought of Ava as a little girl.
So seeing her today after many years had me realizing that she wasn’t the little girl I taught she was anyone.
And this realization had the weirdest and worst timing of all.
The peculiar and untimely timing of this realization added complexity to the situation. I had to regain control immediately, pushing her out of my mind and system before the dynamics of our relationship became irreversibly complicated.
I had to get my act together immediately, there was no place to entertain these thoughts.
