Betrayed
Diara
“Members of the Day Moon Pack, we have unexpected news,” the Alpha of my pack, Martin, said, looking pleased. He had called every young female in the pack to the hall, as he had an important announcement, “The lycan Alpha, Kennis Blackwell, is coming to our pack. He wants to select a young woman between the ages of 20 and 24 to be his Luna.” Gasps and murmurs spread through the hall.
The name Alpha Kennis Blackwell struck fear into everyone’s hearts. He was an ancient, cruel, and dangerous lycan who had lived for five centuries, yet his physical form remained that of a very handsome 28-year-old man. Lycans were similar to werewolves, but they were far superior, stronger and faster, with senses beyond compare. However, they were wiped out in an attack many, many years ago. Alpha Kennis was the only survivor.
Rumors circulated that Alpha Kennis's inner beast had gone mad after losing his mate in the attack, and he had refused to take anyone else. So, why did he want a Luna now?
“Remember, as females of this pack, you have a responsibility to our pack. If the lycan Alpha picks any of you, it will forge a solid alliance with his pack, granting us protection,” he added. The hall fell silent. Every pack sought an alliance with the powerful lycan Alpha, but was the price worth it? I didn’t think so.
A month ago, I wouldn’t have worried about being a potential choice for him because I was dating the Alpha’s son, Matt. I had had a crush on since I was thirteen. But everything changed when I found him and my elder sister Daphne, f*****g vigorously.
Flashback
I had just returned from university and baked him his favorite pie. When I entered his bedroom, I heard moans. I peeked through the door and saw my chosen mate with my sister; their heavy breathing echoed through the walls.
“Yes! Matt!” Daphne moaned. Matt was riding her hard, his hand wrapped around her throat.
“f**k, Daphne,” he groaned, kissing her neck. Her face, full of delight, turned to the side, giving him access to her neck. Tears burned my eyes as I watched. Their moans grew louder.
“Matt, please make me Luna! Please!” she begged, crying as she rotated her hips.
“Of course I will,” he whispered, and then he suddenly stilled, emptying himself inside her. I backed away slowly, tears streaming down my cheeks. A terrible pain burned in my chest, one I had never experienced before, and the pie in my trembling hands fell to the ground. I turned and ran into the woods, wanting nothing to do with Matt or my sister.
“Hello, little wolf,” a deep, sensual voice said. I turned, gasping in surprise.
End of Flashback.
Even though I was betrayed in the worst way possible, my parents and everyone else treated it as if it didn’t matter. They told me to move on because Matt and Daphne made the perfect couple. When I recounted what had happened, my parents rolled their eyes and sneered.
“Daphne is more suited to be Luna.” Mom's words felt like a stab to my chest as she continued. “She’s strong and loved by everyone, and this way, she’s off the ancient lycan’s list. I couldn’t risk her being chosen by that ruthless Alpha.” A visible shiver went down her back at the thought of her precious Daphne being chosen.
But she was willing to risk my life. It wasn’t surprising that they acted this way, but it still hurts. My parents had never liked me, and they often neglected me. My birth had been an accident, and they showed it time and again. As for my sister Daphne, she rarely acknowledged me unless she needed help. She wasn’t mean or harsh, but she wasn’t affectionate either. I learned to live with their disdain.
For the first time in weeks, I left the room and went to sit by my favorite gazebo. It was the only place that gave me solace because it was unkempt and avoided by everyone, much like me. I heard the sound of stiletto heels on the gravel, and my sister, Daphne, came into view. She was the sexy one, the beloved one, the apple of everyone’s eye. We were total opposites, and I often wondered how we could come from the same parents. She was tall, blue-eyed, and had wavy, light-brown hair. She wore short pink dresses and skirts and was the captain of the cheer team from middle school through senior year. I, on the other hand, was short, 5’5 ft to be exact, with long, dark hair. My wardrobe consisted of t-shirts and cargo pants.
“What do you want?” I snarled, my blood boiling at her presence. She was silent, just scrutinizing me. I walked past her when she spoke.
“Are you not over Matt already? Come on, Di, it’s pathetic. It was never going to be you,” she snorted, inspecting her manicured nails. Goddess, I wanted to beat her up so badly, and I was never a violent person.
“Why did you do it? I’m your sister!” I screamed, my hands shaking. She took a step back, her eyebrows raising in surprise. I had never questioned her before because I didn’t want to talk to or look at her. Matt had chosen her as Luna the next night under the full moon and kissed her in front of the whole pack.
“You’re being wild. You need to calm down.” Her words ignited a new wave of anger in me, and I lunged at her. Daphne screamed when I punched her, but she quickly overpowered me. She was much stronger than I was. She grabbed my neck and threw me into the gazebo. The impact knocked the air out of me, and pain coursed through my body.
“You shouldn’t have done that! Attacking a Luna? You will pay for this!” Daphne grabbed me by my hair and raised her hand to strike me. But just before her punch could land on my face, a cold voice that sent shivers down my spine commanded, “Don’t you dare touch her, or I’ll kill you where you stand.”
