A Challenge

The Duel of Fates I waited for Daphne to leave, and I made my way to the training field. Matt stood there, his focus sharp, practicing moves with his beta, Anton. The moment he noticed me, the tension shifted, and Anton walked away. My heart raced, but I had to remind myself that he had chosen my sister. It stung deep. “Why challenge the alpha when you can’t win?” I demanded, trying to keep my voice steady despite the turmoil inside me. He studied me, those intense eyes drinking in every detail. “Because I want you here with me,” he confessed, stepping closer, his breath warm against my skin. “I messed up, Di. If I had chosen you first, Alpha Kennis wouldn’t have picked you.” My pulse quickened. For a moment, the world faded around us. But Dove’s voice echoed in my mind, reminding me of the pain he had caused. “Your recklessness will get you killed,” I spat, pushing my feelings aside. “I have a plan to win,” he said with that infuriating smile, pulling me closer. “Want to hear it?” My skin crawled when he touched me. I couldn’t forget the image of him with my sister. I shoved him away. “I don’t care about your plan. Just beg Alpha Kennis for forgiveness. Even without him, I would never stay with you,” I said, my voice firm. “I’m an alpha. I don’t beg for anything,” he shot back, pridefully. Frustrated, I turned to leave but spotted Alpha Kennis and Louis watching us. The displeasure on their faces sent a chill down my spine. Three hours later, the pack had gathered for the duel in the training field, and the growing crowd only amplified my anxiety. I found a secluded spot in the bleachers, hood pulled low. 'Stop this madness. You can’t win,' I whispered to Matt through the mind-link one last time. 'I’m challenging him for you, Di. I won’t lose you,' Matt replied softly, his stubbornness enraging me. 'You lost me the day you slept with my sister!' Whispers floated around me, “He’s brave,” one man said, while an old woman clucked her tongue in disapproval. Matt arrived first, shirtless and proud, with an air of defiance despite the concern etched on his father’s face. Then Alpha Kennis strode in, a force of nature that commanded silence. The air crackled with tension as they faced off. “Are you truly letting your pup do this?” Kennis muttered to Martin, the disdain palpable. "I don't know what he's thinking, but I'll support my son. I can only hope for the best," Alpha Martin said and bowed, leaving the field to stand nearby. The tension in the air was electric as Matt faced off against Alpha Kennis, a giant who loomed over him. "It's unjust that I have to fight you, being... you," Matt shot, his jaw clenched. Louis, the sly beta, smirked. “If you can hold Kennis down for a minute, Diara stays. But if he wins, you let her go... no fuss." The crowd buzzed with excitement. Matt agreed. . The fight erupted. Matt threw the first punch, surprising Kennis, but the Alpha barely flinched. Kennis retaliated in a blur, landing brutal blows that left Matt reeling. Gasps rippled through the spectators as Matt finally landed a punch, claws biting into Kennis’s side, drawing blood. I winced, the mark on my neck burning with discomfort. They launched themselves at each other, punches flying, the battle entrancing everyone watching. But as the fight wore on, fatigue weighed heavily on Matt; his strikes became sluggish, and the once cocky Alpha was now a bleeding mess. In a desperate final effort, Matt charged. Kennis anticipated him, catching his leg and sending him crashing to the ground. The crowd gasped, but Matt refused to quit. He covered his head as Kennis unleashed a relentless barrage of kicks. “Just concede!” voices cried out, desperation thick in the air. My heart raced for Matt as he was held by the throat, struggling for breath, life slipping away. 'Concede,' I whispered urgently, tears streaming down my face when he finally lowered his head in surrender. Kennis dropped him like a ragdoll, turning to me with a cruel smirk. 'Don’t tempt my fury again. We leave in an hour,' he growled. With Kennis walking away and chaos surrounding Matt, dread settled into me. I was leaving my pack with a monster, and I felt utterly powerless to stop it.
