Chapter 1
The rain in Paris came down so hard it felt like the sky wanted to drown the whole city. Camille Ardent ran anyway, her shoes slipping on the wet pavement as she clutched her torn purse to her chest. Her breath shook. Her hands trembled. She didn’t dare look back. The bar manager’s voice still echoed behind her. The man who cornered her. The man who tried to force her into staying late for “special clients.” Camille didn’t wait to find out what he planned. She sprinted past a row of restaurants, turned sharply, and nearly collided with the towering luxury hotel that rose like a beacon. Warm light. Safety. People. Anything but the street she ran from. She pushed through the side entrance, head down, praying no one would drag her back outside. Her pulse thudded in her ears as she walked briskly toward the elevators. She pressed the top floor. She didn’t know why. She just needed to breathe. The elevator opened into a quiet marble hallway, polished, empty, surreal. Then she saw it - one door half open, a sliver of golden light spilling onto the floor. Maybe a maid forgot to lock it. Camille glanced behind her. Silence. Only her heartbeat. She stepped inside. The suite smelled like warm cedar and expensive cologne. Curtains framed a breathtaking velvet-black skyline. Everything looked untouched, yet intimate, as if someone had just stepped out of the room. Then she saw him. Tall. Broad. Beautiful in a dangerously effortless way. The kind of beauty that didn’t need attention to command a room. His gray eyes lifted slowly to hers as if he’d been expecting someone. Relief softened his expression. A faint, aching relief. “Finally,” he said quietly. “You came.” Camille froze. “I’m sorry… I think you’ve mistaken me for…” But he didn’t hear her. Or maybe he heard only what he wanted to. He walked toward her slowly, like a man approaching a memory. His gaze swept over her face with a mix of longing and disbelief. “You came back,” he whispered. “After all this time.” Her breath caught. “Sir, I don’t know…” He reached out, gently brushing raindrops from her cheek. His touch wasn’t forceful. It wasn’t careless. It was… tender. Like he was touching someone he once loved. Camille should have stepped away. She didn’t. Maybe it was the adrenaline. Maybe it was the fear. Maybe it was the strange safety she felt in his presence. She didn’t understand it, but something held her still. “You look the same,” he murmured, voice breaking slightly. “The same eyes. The same softness. I thought I lost you forever.” Her chest tightened. “I’m not who you think…” His hand dropped to his side. His jaw flexed. He swallowed hard, as if torn between reality and a ghost. “I shouldn’t have touched you,” he said quietly. “But I thought… I hoped…” He stepped back a little, giving her space, but the hurt on his face did something to her spirit. Something she wished it didn’t. Camille was exhausted. Soaked. Scared. And for one fragile moment… she was seen. He lifted his eyes slowly, a question lingering there. A silent plea. Not a demand. Not control. Just a man afraid to lose something again. “Why did you come if you weren’t staying?” he said softly. She didn’t mean to move closer. But she did. Just one step. His breath hitched. Her heart thudded painfully in her chest. He reached for her again—slowly, giving her every chance to walk away. She didn’t. His hand brushed her cheek again, warmer this time, waiting. And she gave in. Not because she knew him. Not because she owed him anything. But because she was tired of being afraid. Tired of running. Tired of being unseen, unheard, unwanted. She leaned into his palm. Just slightly. That was all it took. He kissed her softly at first, almost questioning. She answered him with a trembling exhale, closing her eyes as the world fell away. The tension between them shifted, no longer fear, no longer confusion, but something unspoken and magnetic. His hands slid to her waist, steady and warm. Her fingers curled into his shirt. She didn’t push him away. She didn’t want to. The night blurred from rain-soaked fear into warmth… into closeness… into whispered breaths and surrender. No force. No confusion. Just two people making a choice neither of them understood. It was wrong. It was reckless. But it was real. By the time dawn crept in through the penthouse windows, Camille was already slipping out of the suite, heart pounding with regret… and something else she refused to name. Upstairs, the billionaire stood at the window, staring at the city like he’d lost her twice in one lifetime. Then he looked down. A small card lay near the door. He picked it up slowly. Read her name. Camille Ardent. A slow, dangerous smile touched his lips. “She came back,” he whispered. “And I’m never letting her disappear again.”
