If Only
Chapter One: A Summer Getaway
On a hot summer day in Simon's Cove, a small town just outside Midrand, Isabella Rose had just completed her projects, a task assigned by her lecturer, Mr. David, along with one project halfway done.
Her friend, Amanda Smith, had been calling her relentlessly, urging her to join them for a summer break. They were planning a mind - blowing holiday at a luxurious beach house owned by the affluent Cross Family.
Amanda agreed to let Isabella finish her project while she plans to enjoy herself with her wealthy friends, if Isabella agrees to do the same. Isabella knew that Amanda's friends were incredibly good-looking but not known for their loyalty.
Isabella gave up on love years ago, after a painful heartbreak when she discovered her boyfriend kissing her best friend, Samantha Roberson, Isabella vowed not to love again. She believed love was just an illusion created by desperate individuals trying to hold onto someone who didn't genuinely care.
However, when she met Amanda, Isabella sensed something different about her. Amanda was enchanting and left men spellbound with her beauty. Still, she was genuine despite coming from money, Amanda become Isabella's best friend during their first year of college. Bella borrowed Amanda's laptop while waiting for her new laptop to arrive. One night, while studying into the early morning hours, Bella accidentally spilled coffee on her laptop. Isabella freaked out knowing her family is not wealthy and they will not be able to replace the laptop she desperately needs. Amanda offered to buy her a new one. Isabella was grateful.
Amanda invited Bella to numerous campus parties, and she always says, “I have to work, next time for sure”, but this time Isabella decided to make a little effort and for the first time Bella agreed to accompany Amanda to the crazy campus parties. The party kicked off with drinks everywhere they enjoyed themselves without a care in the world, as all their troubles disappeared into the distant night.
They woke the next day with one hell of a headache and swore to never overindulge again.

Chapter Two: The Arrival
The journey to the beach house was long and painful. Isabella found herself surrounded by affluent young girls and arrogant rich guys, with Amanda as her only familiar companion. Fortunately, they were headed to a beach house, providing some relief from the scorching heat. Upon arrival, Emily enthusiastically declared, "We have arrived! This house belongs to my brother, Jake Cross, who's on a business trip. He agreed to let us use it for the holidays."
Jake Cross, a bachelor self-made billionaire, who distanced himself from his family, and relatives.
He had dropped out of university and ventured into the world of technology, earning his place among the wealthy elite. Yet, he preferred to keep his family at arm's length, except for his younger sister, Emily Cross known to him as “Emms”. His family felt that Jake disgraced the family name when he dropped out and made Jake well aware of his place by stripping him of most of the Cross-family wealth to punish him.
Isabella found herself wondering if the entire group had to hear Emily's life story. She felt tortured in that moment, contemplating why she agreed to this holiday.
They pulled over onto a side road, a path directing them to the villa. They are standing in front of huge gates with "The CROSS Family" crafted on the gates, Emily punched the code in and the gates open. The beauty of the house and surroundings left Isabella breathless.
The well-kept grounds and the stunning house hidden behind the trees were nothing short of breathtaking. Emily informed everyone that the staff had left, and they would need to fend for themselves. Isabella thought to herself how unbelievable it is to know that the wealthy could indeed cook for themselves, laughing to herself, yeah right take-aways will be the chef.
Emily announced their plans for the night, telling everyone to choose their rooms and prepare for the party later the evening.
While everyone scattered in search of their rooms, something caught Emily's attention, a silhouette, leading her in a different direction.
------------------------------------------
Chapter Three: Jake's Return
As Emily approached the patio where the silhouette appears, she called out but there was no response and when she neared the patio facing the ocean, she spotted Jake. He seemed lost in thought, his gaze fixed on the horizon.
"Jake, what are you doing here? I thought you were on a business trip and returning after the holidays," Emily asked.
Jake explained that his business trip had concluded earlier than expected, and he needed a break from the office and familiar surroundings. Jake reassured Emily that he wouldn't interfere with her plans and her friends, but Emily wouldn’t hear any of it, her brother was there, that was all she needed to make her holidays complete. She hadn't seen her brother in a long time and couldn't hide her excitement. However, Jake seemed burdened by something, a weight on his shoulders that seemed overbearing. Jake was holding a whiskey, and his sister can see that he had a few down already.
Jake asked Emily to give him some time alone to sort out a few business deals and promised to find them later. He couldn't help but question the loyalty of someone he considered a dear friend, who was accused of stealing from him. Balancing his personal and professional life became increasingly challenging.
Emily left her brother to his thoughts. But her concern lingered, as she suspected that something was troubling him.
Jake's mind was spinning, he couldn't believe that his dearest friend was stealing from him. Jake was a ruthless businessman that everyone feared because he will rain hell on whoever tries to destroy him. But Brain Mac Donald was his dear friend or so I thought. If he leaves this situation and do nothing, then others will see him as weak and use this as opportunity.
Jake knows that he has no choice but to make an example of him to protect his company. The decision was not easy but a necessity. After the holidays he would need to fly back to deal with this situation but for now he just needs to contemplate his strategy with the advice his legal advisor Adv. Moonsamy provided.
----------------------------------------
Chapter Four: The Party
As he walked, Jake noticed one of Emily's friends sitting by the pool. He yearned for a moment of relaxation to ease the tension that had built up. Emily's friends, Tracey and Kimberly, had been fighting for his attention, and crawling in and out of his bed hoping to secure a place within the Cross family's affluent circle, without his sister's knowledge. However, his focus shifted when he saw a new face by the pool.
"Who is this girl, one of Emily's new friends?" Jake wondered. There was something about her that drew him in, something he couldn't quite place. As he approached, he noticed that the girl was sitting at the far end of the pool. She quickly left as he drew nearer.
The peaceful atmosphere was disrupted by the arrival of Emily and her friends, accompanied by a few guys. Their boisterous laughter and intoxicated antics signaled their intention to party the night away.
"Guys, meet my brother Jake. Hands off, ladies," Emily warned her friends. "Jake, meet my boyfriend, Blake."
While Jake tried to ignore the intrusion, his attention remained captivated by the mysterious girl he had seen by the pool. Despite Tracey's persistent attempts to engage him, he couldn't help but be irritated by her presence. He wanted nothing more than to learn more about the intriguing girl he had briefly encountered.
The night continued to unfold, filled with alcohol and camaraderie, providing a brief break from Jake's troubles. But as the morning sun rose, he couldn't shake the thought of the enigmatic girl by the pool.
The next morning, Jake awoke with a throbbing headache, only to discover Tracey in his bed. He was taken aback and frustrated by the unexpected guest. He hastily made his way to the main house's kitchen, eager to escape the awkward situation.
To his surprise, the kitchen was filled with enticing aromas. His skilled chef, Jovian, had been granted time off, knowing that his sister and friends would take advantage. Jake wondered who was cooking contemplating whether Jovian returned, but as he walked closer, he noticed the person in the kitchen is not Jovian it’s the pool girl. Jake couldn't help but be drawn to her as he observed her moving gracefully about the kitchen, her presence was alluring.
------------------------------------
Chapter Five: The Pool Girl
Jake was captivated by the kitchen's aromas, and as he entered, he noticed the person before him was the captivating pool girl. The girl turned around, and in that moment, Jake's heart seemed to stop. He was mesmerized by the girl's beauty, her striking blue eyes, the way the light of the sun falls on her appearance, especially the way her pajamas accentuated her petite figure. Jake felt as if he was standing in the presence of a goddess, leaving him momentarily speechless.
Trying to compose himself, Jake hears the goddess speak. "Good morning, I'm Isabella." The pool girl greeted him,
"Morning, I'm Jake, Emily's brother," replied Jake. "Breakfast smells delicious."
Isabella was caught off guard by her own infatuation, momentarily forgetting her cautious approach toward men.
She managed to explain that she accompanied Amanda for the holidays, but she is actually there to finish some work due for campus.
Isabella “Are you hungry, everyone is still sleeping, I guess the party was pretty awesome",
Jake "it was pretty nice, well while they are sleeping may I join you for breakfast, im starving",
Emily fist wanted to hesitate and say no, but then she changed her mind. "Sure, you may", Jake felt lost in her presence as if everything for the first time felt right, like all his worries and disappointments disappeared and they were the only two people in the world, and then, she smiled, and his heart skipped a beat.
Isabella captivated Jake's soul his heart, his mind and he doesn't even know what is silently forming in that moment. Every minute in her company felt like his world changed, he was this small pebble in the ocean being shaped by the current, wave after wave.
They shared an easy conversation as Isabella continued to prepare breakfast, and Jake couldn't help but find himself drawn to her intelligence, warmth, and kindness.
The rest of the day passed in a whirlwind of events and laughter as the group enjoyed the beach and crazy activities. Jake, despite his initial reservations, found himself growing more interested in Isabella. He observed her interactions with the others, her humility and charm, and became increasingly convinced that there was more to her than meets the eye.
As the days turned into nights, Isabella and Jake spent more time together, and their connection deepened. Despite their initial reluctance to embrace love, they couldn't deny the powerful emotions that had begun to stir within them.
-----------------------------------
Chapter Six: Unveiling the Past
As Isabella and Jake's connection grew stronger, they found themselves drawn to one another like two ships in the night. Despite their initial reservations about love, they couldn't deny the powerful emotions that continued to simmer beneath the surface.
One evening, while walking along the beach at sunset, Jake decided to open about his past, sharing the weight that had been burdening him for so long. He told Isabella about his rise in the tech industry, the trust he had placed in a close friend who had allegedly betrayed him, and the ongoing legal battles that had become a significant part of his life. Isabella listened attentively, understanding the complexities that came with success and wealth.
Isabella, in turn, revealed her own past, recounting the heartbreak she had experienced when her boyfriend cheated on her with her best friend, Samantha. This betrayal had left her wary of love and skeptical of those who sought to enter her life. Jake listened with empathy, realizing the deep hurt that Isabella had carried with her. She told him about her studies and that she aspires to become a pediatrician for her love of children.
Their shared vulnerability brought them closer together, and their connection deepened even further. They found solace in each other's presence, feeling a warmth that went beyond mere attraction. Isabella saw Jake not as a wealthy billionaire, but as a man who had endured his share of struggles and hardships. Jake saw Isabella not as a guarded, unapproachable woman but as someone who had faced heartache and emerged stronger.
As their feelings for each other intensified, they decided to keep their budding romance a secret from the rest of the group. Emily, Amanda, and the others continued to enjoy their summer holiday, unaware of the deepening bond between Isabella and Jake.
--------------------------------------
Chapter Seven: A Secret Romance
Jake and Isabella's secret romance continued to blossom. They cherished stolen moments of intimacy, away from the prying eyes of Emily's friends. They found refuge in each other, experiencing love like they never thought possible.
One evening, as they strolled along the moonlit beach, Jake stopped and took Isabella's hand. He looked into her eyes, searching for the right words.
"Isabella Rose, we've found something truly special here," he began. "I can't deny my feelings for you any longer. I love you, Isabella Rose."
Isabella's heart raced as she realized that her own feelings for Jake matched his. "I love you too, Jake Cross," she whispered.
In that moment, they sealed their love with a passionate kiss and romance under the starry night sky. They knew that their love was unlike anything they ever experienced, transcending the boundaries of wealth and past heartbreaks.
However, their secret was bound to be discovered sooner or later. Emily had noticed the deepening connection between her brother and Isabella. She decided to confront Jake about it one afternoon, knowing her friend Tracey was interested in Jake and she routed for the two them when Tracey confessed her undying love for her brother.
"Jake, I can see the way you look at Isabella, and it's clear she feels the same way," Emily said. "Why are you keeping this a secret? Is there something you're not telling me?" “Why would you string Isabella around knowing Tracey is here, did you even consider her feelings”.
Jake was confused, did his sister know about them, or did Tracey tell her, "What are you talking about, I don't give a damn about Tracey" He didn't want to continue the conversation with Emms because she is irritating him, and frustration is building. Jake walked off before things got out of hand.
Jake hesitated, but he knew he couldn't keep their love hidden from his sister forever. Later he called Emily to his cottage and finally confessed to his sister, explaining how they had fallen in love and that he hadn't planned for it to happen.
Emily was taken aback, how could you, Isabella is just an ordinary small-town girl. "You need to end this, Jake. Tracey is an amazing woman, what you are feeling for Isabella is not real, it’s just this situation that is making you confused."
Jake was furious with his sister’s outburst, before he says something he cannot take back he walked off again.
Jake in search of Isabella wants to reveal their relationship to the rest of the group, even though they knew it might come as a surprise. They hoped that their friends would accept their love and continue to enjoy their summer holidays together.
-------------------------------------
Chapter Eight: Blake Resurfacing
That evening Jake gathered the group and made his announcement, not long after their relationship became the talk of the group. Some were surprised, others supportive like Amanda, and a few were envious.
The evening was filled with fake laughter and dancing, and Isabella and Jake felt truly happy in the midst of the group’s personal feelings. However, their happiness was soon overshadowed by the unexpected arrival of a powerful storm. Isabella heard that Emily’s boyfriend was there, but she didn't see him, until now. Blake Steward emerging from the house and walking towards the pool area. The boy who broke her heart years ago, is the boyfriend of Emily Cross. Isabella looked like she saw a ghost and so did Blake.
Blake’s eyes were fixed on Isabella and then he remembered where he was. Blake couldn’t believe the girl he loved most of his life is sitting in front of him. If his parent didn’t relocate, if he didn’t disappear after the Samantha incident, then they probably be together, engaged to be married after their graduation as promised. They were in love until his parents abruptly left. Blake never called Isabella to let know why they left and never apologized for kissing her friend. He just left knowing the pain she felt, and he could bare hearing that in her voice, so he just disappeared.
All the feelings he had for Isabella resurfaced instantly and his happiness was short-lived when Emily approached him and told him of her brother's announcement. In that moment Blake felt like someone stabbed a knife through his heart.
Blake walked up to Jake and Isabella and congratulated them and instead of taking Isabella’s hand, he pulled her in for a hug. Holding her in his arms felt familiar to him, like she belonged, like it was reserved for her. Blake inhaled her scent, the smell of her hair, his “Bella” is back, and all the memories flashed through his mind in an instance.
Jake noticed that Blake was holding his girl to long and asked that he released the love of his life. Blake knew that he needs to pretend that he doesn’t know Isabella, because Emily can be deviously wicked. If she finds out about their history, then things will become difficult for both Isabella and him.
-----------------------------------
Chapter Nine: The truth Comes Out
Meeting Blake was shocking for Isabella, but she told Jake everything except the name of the man that broke her heart. The vulnerability is what made their relationship strong with the honesty and passion they share.
When they returned to Bella’s room, things heated quickly as their emotions intensified and the passion ignited. Isabella and Jake's love story served as a beacon of hope in the midst of their chaos.
The next morning Jake told Isabella to get ready for a beach day and relaxation. Isabella packed the picnic basket and Jake grabbed the towels and blanket and they headed off in the direction of the private beach.
"I don't know what the future holds," Jake said, "but I do know that love has brought us together in this moment. Our love is strong enough to weather any storm."
With those words, he kissed Isabella, realizing that love, in all its forms, was their refuge in the face of adversity. The day was filled with laughter as Jake grabs Isabella over his shoulder and dropped her in the water, splashing and swimming with stolen kisses and romance in between. The moment was spectacular but short-lived when they were interrupted by Tracey’s presence. “Jake, we need to talk”, Tracey shouted. Isabella and Jake were astounded, why would she need to talk and about what? They swim back to the shore to meet Tracy by the water edge.
Tracey asked Isabella if she could have a moment alone with Jake, but he refused and said that she could talk in front of Isabella, because he’s got nothing to hide from the love of his life. Tracey looked angry and gave Isabella a look that said, “You will not take what belongs to me”, then she said something that shocked Isabella “We’ve been sleeping together Jake, why are you treating me like this, why are you ignoring me baby after out night together in your cottage, I love you.”
Jake and Isabella were surprised, and then Isabella stormed off in disbelief. The man she fell in love with has betrayed her with another woman. Isabella couldn’t believe what transpired, one moment she was happy and the next, her world crumbled again. How could she have been so blind; how could she not have seen the signs.
--‐---------------------------------------------------
Chapter Ten: The Heartbreak
Isabella headed straight for the main house, Jake called after her, but she didn’t turn back to look, she felt hurt with so many emotions coursing through her body. This weekend has turned out to be the worst weekend she ever had she thought.
When she reached the main house Amanda and the group was lounging outside, Isabella tried to avoid them, but Amanda spotted her, and the attempt to avoid her was pointless, she saw Isabella and came running after her, like the mother hen she is, protective and ready to defend. "Bella, what's wrong? What happened, did Jake do something to you? Bella just stop and talk to me for crying out loud", Isabella turned around to face Amanda with tears in her eyes, " Can we leave please?" Why, Amanda asked, she is very concerned about her, what did Jake do to upset you so much?
Bella, "He didn't do anything, it's about what he didn't say that upsets me, I let my guard down for a second, I thought he was different, how wrong was I. He is just a typical guy who wants his bread buttered both ways."
Amanda, "I'm totally confused here Bella, do you like Jake, what happened on the beach". Nothing happened Amanda, we were interrupted by Tracey his late-night accomplishment, who came looking for her lover.
A few moments later, Jake and Tracy arrived, they were arguing so loud that everyone got up. Jake was furious, Tracy was hanging on him begging him to stay with her, declaring her love and Jake just brushed her off, saying what they had was a mistake, something that should never have happened. But Tracy wouldn't hear any of it.
Amanda and I was standing on top of the staircase looking down at them. Then Jake looked up and saw Isabella, and within a second, he ran up the stairs, leaving Tracy in disbelief.
Jake, "Bella let me explain please, I owe it to you" Amanda is standing behind Isabella, and before she could say anything, Jake asked Amanda to please give them a second to talk. Amanda looked in Isabelle's eyes searching for her approval then left when she gave the OK. But Tracey was fuming, how dare Jake just leave her groveling in the middle of the lounge area in front of all her friends and run to that small town, ordinary girl without status or wealth. She is a nobody compared to her, Tracy thought. I will show Jake that she is nothing and that we are meant to be. I will do whatever it takes to make him understand, Jake belongs to me, Tracey thought.
Jake takes Isabella's hand and off they go to his cottage to talk.
Blake was standing on the patio watching this chaos unfolding and all he wants to do is grab Isabella's hand out of Jake's hold and punch the fool for hurting her. Seeing her that way, hurt is enough to get him mad. All Blake wanted to do was to take Bella and hold her, but he couldn’t, all he could do is watch her from afar, hoping she will be ok. When Jake passed Blake with her, it took every fiber of his body to step aside.
Blake knew Emily was watching, how her brother took off with another woman leaving Tracy standing in lounge. Isabella is the enemy now. BIake hopes Emily and Tracy don't setup some conspiracy to hurt Bella or stir trouble.
--------------------------------------
Chapter Eleven: A Love That Endures
The awkwardness as Jake and Isabella walked passed everyone was unnerving for her. Isabella wondered what is going through their minds, she knows Jake don't give a F@#k, but she does, especially about Amanda. Isabella didn’t want to cause problems between Amanda and her friends. Hopefully they won't take this out on her.
As they enter Jakes cottage, he poured himself a whiskey , and offered Isabella one, normally she would say no, but this time she welcomed the drink because of the situation she found herself in. As she walks towards him, she passes his bedroom and noticed the bed was still untidy, did he sleep with her again, Isabella wondered.
Isabella, "So here I am, explain or don't, but I'm not going to stand here and listen to a man who wants his bread buttered both ways.",
Jake "Bella please, it's not that simple, let me explain please", "Fine, do your best Mr. Cross."
Two maids entered the cottage, the same moment Jake noticed Isabella looking in his bedroom and her eyes falling on his bed. He asked the maids to start in the bedroom and to close the doors then leave via the patio door, giving them time alone to talk.
Jake, "Bella I had no intension to find someone I'm attracted to, I'm not a good person and I had so many things that I had to deal with and decisions that I had to make, I was angry so many emotions went through my mind, I just wanted to be alone, I wanted to make sense of things and then you. When I saw you by the pool side, I was immediately attracted to you, I needed to know who you are."
You are unbelievable, you were so attracted to me that you sleep with Tracey, how stupid do you think I am, Isabella said.
Bella please that is not what I meant, I was not interested in Tracey, I wanted to go look for you, but the drinks were flowing and somehow, I ended up in bed with her. I'm sorry, I can't change what happened, but I promise if you give me a chance, I will try to fix things and make it right. Give me a chance to show you who I am, not the businessman people fear, not the billionaire, the man behind all of it. Give me a chance please. When I'm with you, everything seems right, everything makes sense. You turned my life around. You are all I'm thinking of every day",
"When I met you, I felt the same, and then I let my guard down, I gave you a chance Jake, how do I know that I will be enough for a man like you" Isabella said.
Then Jake moved closer and closer, until he was standing right in front of her. Isabella could smell the whiskey on his breath and his cologne, his scent was overpowering. Then Jake whispered, you are all the woman I need Isabelle Rose. There is no other that can come close to you. I need you, my love. Bella tried to resist but Jake was like a lion zoning in on his prey. The atmosphere changed in an instance when Jake placed his hands on Bella's hips and all their resistance disappeared. They kissed as if there was no tomorrow and held each other close and in that moment, Bella agreed to give him a chance.
Things heated quickly thereafter and then Bella stops. I'm not going to be one of those girls you bed that easily Mr. Cross, you will have to work for it. Jake laughs, saying that is his ultimate priority.
On that note, you better take me back to your main house. Jake could see the concern in Isabella’s voice and took her hands in his and told her not to worry about the people back at the house, he will speak to his sister and her friends, and sort this matter out.
Isabella and Jake return to the main house to be greeted by Emily and all her friends, waiting in anticipation.
"Jake, you are making a mistake, she is not one of us" Tracey shouted. Then Jake's grib tightens on my hand, he turned around and looked at Tracy and said, "
Don't be mistaken she is not a gold digger like most of you chasing titles, my girl is one of a kind, I rather spent time with her then 10 of you" and then they lef in Jake's luxurious sports car.
----‐----‐---------------------------------------------
Chapter Twelve: Romance Rekindle
Jake drove along the coast with love songs playing via the stereo, this guy is such a romantic. We stopped at a lovely intimate restaurant for lunch on top of a hill overlooking the ocean. This place is familiar to him, the lady at the counter greets Jake with hug and smile. "Hi aunty D, this is the love of my life, Isabella Rose" Jake told the woman who serves us, "You are most welcome Ms. Rose, this is one special man you have here, I'm Dorothy but everyone calls me Aunty D"
Jake and Bella sat and talked for hours, just enjoying each other's company. They didn't notice the time, until Aunty D said they are closing. That moment they burst out laughing, apologizing to Aunty D, then Jake gave her an extra big tip and a hug as they leave.
Isabella and Jake's love story continued to flourish, and they found themselves drawn even closer after facing adversity together.
The story of Isabella Rose and Jake Cross serves as a reminder that love has the power to transcend the boundaries of wealth and past heartbreaks, that it can withstand even the fiercest storms, and that, in the end, it is the love we give and receive that truly matters.
Their love story continued.
