CHAPTER 1
Under a cool breeze at St. Anthony's orphanage home, there sat Milia, a 20-year-old who had distanced herself away from her peers. Milia who was deep in thought was staring at them. The playful screams of the other children faded into a muffled hum for Milia. Withdrawn beneath the shade of a sprawling oak, her chin rested on her knees as she studied the scene unfolding before her. Laughter tumbled like leaves in the cool breeze, chased by the frantic energy of young games. Yet, a dull ache throbbed within her. Why did their joy sound so foreign? Milia had just remembered a past memory of her and her parents laughing and all of a sudden a sudden a fire outburst, her father rushed her out of the house and was about to go get her mum when the explosion happened leaving her all alone. Suddenly, a shadow stretched across the grass. Sister Agnes, her kind eyes creased with a gentle smile, stood before her. "Milia, dear," she began, her voice soft as a dove's coo, "someone special is here to see you." Milia's head snapped up, disbelieving etching lines on her brow. "Me?" she whispered, the word barely audible. "Yes, you," Sister Agnes confirmed, squeezing her hand warmly. "Come, don't keep them waiting." Uncertainty tugged at Milia's heart as she followed the nun. Milia hasn't had a Visitor since she was 10 after her parents died in an arson. Her gaze darted from Sister Agnes' comforting smile to the door where the unknown awaited. Each step felt heavier than the last, burdened by years of longing and questions. As they reached the doorway, a hush fell over the small room. All eyes were on her, the children's playful expressions morphing into curious stares. In the middle stood a man, her eyes filled with a mixture of hope. Sister Agnes placed a hand on Milia's shoulder. "This is Mr. Rodriguez, Milia. He's been waiting to meet you.” Milia managed a shy nod, unsure of what was expected. Mr. Rodriguez knelt, his gaze warm and sincere. "Hello, Milia," he said, his voice slightly trembling. "My name is Robert Rodriguez. Would you like to come outside and get to know each other?" Milia hesitated, her eyes flitting between the man's hopeful smile and the playground echoing with unfamiliar laughter. Taking a deep breath, she surprised even herself by nodding. As she stepped out into the sunlight, hand-in-hand with Robert, a flicker of something sparked within her. Perhaps, just perhaps, this breeze carried the scent of a new beginning. “Who are you and why did you come just for me?” she asked with curiosity. “I haven't had any visitors since I came here,” she said. “I'm an old friend of your dad, I've looked for you for 10 years now, you indeed grew up to be the exact copy of your dad,” he said as he smiled at her. “You knew my parents, How?” She asked. Milia's gaze remained cautious, searching for any hint of deception in Robert's kind eyes. "An old friend? But why haven't I ever seen you before?" Robert's smile softened, a touch of sadness creeping in. "Life took us on different paths, Milia. But your father and I always kept in touch. He entrusted me with your well-being when things... became complicated." His words trailed off, leaving an ominous silence hanging in the air. Milia's curiosity morphed into apprehension. "Complicated? What do you mean?” Hesitantly, Robert lowered himself to sit beside her on the bench. "There were forces at play, forces that threatened your family's safety. Your father knew he couldn't keep you safe, so he made a difficult choice, a promise." Milia's heart pounded in her chest. "What promise?" "He entrusted you to my care, believing I could offer you a haven, a chance to grow up safe and loved," Robert explained, his voice heavy with emotion. "And I haven't given up on that promise for a single day." A lot of questions swirled in Milia's mind. "Forces? Why would anyone hurt us? And why now, after all these years?" Robert sighed, his gaze turning distant. "The answers aren't simple, Milia. They involve secrets your father protected, dangers that still linger. “If you wish to know about what happened, then you have to follow me,” Robert said. “I won't follow you," Milia declared, her voice firm despite the tremor in her hands. "My parents died because of the fire, and I was left alone I wish I had died with them, I always ask the heavens why I was kept alive after all those years." Robert knelt, his eyes level with hers. "I understand your fear, Milia. But trust me, the fire wasn't an accident. It was planned, and your father... well, he knew something bad was going to happen." Intrigue sparked in Milia's eyes, overcoming her apprehension. "Planned? What do you mean?" Instead of answering, Robert pulled out a worn photograph from his pocket. It showed a younger version of himself, his arm slung around a smiling man with eyes that mirrored Milia's. "This is me and your father," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "We were the best of friends, closer than brothers." Milia hesitantly reached out, her fingers tracing the image of her father. A pang of longing shot through her, a yearning for a past she barely remembered. "Your father and I had a dream," Robert continued, his gaze fixed on the picture. "We wanted to build a well-developed world, where children like you can mix up with the rich without being criticized." His words hung heavy in the air, the accusation clear. Milia stared at him, her mind reeling. Could it be true? Was the fire that stole her parents something more? "I don't understand," she whispered, her voice trembling. "I can't tell you everything here," Robert said, his voice low. "But I promise you this: if you come with me, I'll answer all your questions. I'll tell you about your parents, the fire, and why I've been searching for you for so long." He held out his hand, open and genuine. "The choice is yours, Milia. Stay here, or take a chance on a truth that might finally set you free." Milia stared at his hand, then at the playground filled with unfamiliar faces. Laughter seemed hollow now, drowned out by the weight of Robert's words. Maybe staying here meant staying trapped in the past. Maybe this stranger held the key to understanding her own story. Slowly, she reached out and placed her small hand in his. "Alright," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "Take me home.” The journey had just begun. As they walked hand-in-hand, leaving the orphanage behind, a new chapter unfolded. Questions swirled in Milia's mind, fear battling with a sliver of hope. But one thing was certain: her life was about to change forever.
