“I'd learned that some things are best kept secret.” ― Nicholas Sparks ---- (Mikayla) I stared at the guy, my heart thundering in my chest. Everyone must have heard him, too, because they were all looking at me with discomfort and confusion. They all knew I was already mated, and they knew August, too. Every morning, some of the nurses came out just to stare at my mate's butt as he walked away. It was one hell of a butt, too, and I loved biting his- "You are going way off the tracks," said Hera with a frown. "How could this man be our mate? I don't feel anything! He must have hit his head, hard!" I hoped the same, too, but how could it be just a coincidence that the brown wolf in my dreams when I was dreamwalking had the exact same eyes as this man? And even though I didn't feel the full power of the mate bond, I felt something, even before I saw him. No one said anything as they all stood around for a second, before they realized they hadn't time to just stand around. "Call doctor Aria and doctor Gemma," one of the nurses shouted, and everyone else came back from the shocked state. As the unconscious man was rolled away from me on a gurney, I stood there staring at him. For a second, everything around me vanished and I felt like I was standing in the middle of an empty white vacuum, where there was only blinding white. My ears rang. Blained tapped me on my shoulder and motioned me to follow him. I wordlessly followed him to his room and he closed the door behind us. Blaine's internship was over, and now he had his own room. Me, still an intern, had no room, or no privacy. So I was grateful for this moment of solitude. "Sit, Kayla," he said, and I slumped gratefully onto the plush couch on the side, my heart still thundering loudly. "You look pale." "You heard that, too, right?" I looked up nervously, hoping that he would say he didn't hear anything. He looked remorseful as he nodded his head. "He said he has been looking for you." Yes. So, I hadn't misheard him or anything. This nightmare was really happening. "Do you think he was just - just delirious? He was pretty out of it, right?" I was still hopeful. I had gone through a lot, watching August with someone else. Even though they weren't really marked or anything, which I only found out later, it still gave me so much pain, just to know that he had someone, and I would never want to put August through that. "If August hears about how you have been dreaming about this wolf... he will-" Hera sighed. It was a mess. I had three months of utter peace and happiness. I was happy, and I loved my life. Everything was going amazingly well, except those dreams about the brown wolf. But I thought it would just stop. I never thought it would materialize into my real life. I should have told August about it the first time I dreamwalked, that was all I could think right now. "Here," Blaine handed me a glass of water, pulling me out of my thoughts. I gripped the glass tighter in my hands, trying to stop my trembling fingers. "Thanks, Blaine." "So, how are we going to deal with this?" he asked as he pulled a chair towards me. "I don't know. I f*cking don't know." I closed my eyes and sighed. "I almost wish he wouldn't wake up. I know that is so damn wrong. A doctor is never supposed to think like that, and I know it. I am not supposed to think like that. But a small part of me wishes-" I stopped and closed my eyes. "But that is just- s**t, it is so wrong. I hope he will wake up. Maybe it is all just a misunderstanding." I felt like everything was changing once again and chaos was breaking. When I woke up this morning, I had no idea the wolf in my dream would come to my hospital, only half alive. "I am sorry Kayla. Should we go and see how he is?" "Yes, come on," I said as I stood up. Whatever it was, I knew I couldn't run away. It was better to face it head on. I had never been a coward, and I couldn't start now. I also couldn't think like a f*cking monster. That wasn't why I became a doctor. I became a doctor to try and help and save everyone I could. I must remember that. The freaking darkness inside me shouldn't show its ugly head, not right now. We walked along the long corridors to finally reach the OR. Doctors and nurses were busy going in and out. One of the nurses stopped when she saw me. "Doctor Eors." "How is the condition of the patient?" Blaine asked. "The cuts were too deep, and his wolf was attacked severely, but he will recover, Doctor Storm," she said before she walked in. I breathed out a sigh of relief when I heard that, and a strange sense of calmness washed over me. "I am going to go find my uncle, right now," I said to Blaine. "I don't think I will be much use in the hospital today anyway." "Do you want me to fly you to Lykos?" Blaine asked. My uncle, Azareal, was mated to the Lycan Princess Thara, the daughter of King Elizah and Queen Camelia. Well, Azareal's story was pretty insane, too. Maybe everyone in our crazy family was f*cking cursed, because my grandmother was a crazy psycho. Yes, she did good in the end, but she did more bad than she did good. "No, I will call him." His dragon Raek and I had become quick friends, too. And now that Blaine had stopped his constant flirting--he did it only when August was around, just to rile him up-- Blaine had become an important part of my life. I waved at him and walked out. Soon after submitting a request to take the day off, I walked out of the hospital and called Irene, first. "I will be in my dad's home, in ten minutes. Wait for me," I told her when she answered the phone. Now that I knew what I was going with this, I could calm myself down a little, but it wsa still hard. "Why? What is going-" "Just be there, please. I need to talk with you. And bring chocolate. A lot of chocolate. Now, I need to call Azareal. Bye." I dialed Azareal's number, next. He was my go-to, these days, for most of the problems I had. He was powerful, and also crazy. I liked him. Spending time with him and Zekiel made me feel like I was a part of my dad's life, even though I could never meet my dad. He picked up after the fifth ring, panting. "It is morning, Azareal," I smirked. "Hello Princess Thara," I shouted and I heard her laugh at the other end. "I need you to get dressed and come get me. I am at the hospital." "Do I look like your personal chauffeur, Mikayla?" My uncle didn't sound too pleased, but he would get over it, because he loved me. I was his best niece. Only niece, but still... "Please," I said and I heard him sigh and tell something to his mate. I could hear him grumbling something under his breath, and after five minutes, he was in front of me. "What is the emergency?" "To my dad's house, now." When we reached there, Irene was already there with a bag. She handed it to me and smiled at Azareal. "Hello, uncle," she said as she scanned him up and down. The crazy b***h had a crush of Azareal, and when she called him uncle, it had a thousand s****l innuendo buried in one single word. "You can ogle him later, I need to tell you guys something. So, today-" I looked at both of them, and the crazy feeling started again in my stomach as I thought about it. "Today? What?" "I met someone. He was attacked by bloodmongrels, and he was unconscious. But for a brief moment, he woke up, and he called me mate!" "You know... he was unconscious, so?! Why are you so worried about it? He must have been feverish and delirious. You are a doctor, you know that," Azareal said with a shrug. "Don't worry about that, Mikayla. You and August are doing great, and I have seen how happy he makes you. You two are perfect." "I am happy, but- I have been keeping a secret from him. I mean, from all of you." "Secret? What secret?" "So I have been "dreaming" about a wolf, and the wolf has the same eyes as the unconscious man!" "Well, I'll be damned!" *** (August) I was looking through the budget of the pack prepared by Aleesa and Ripley, the accountants of Obsidian moon, already missing Mikayla, when Caleb walked in with the mail. He put them down and sat down on the chair. "So, Alpha, you look happy!" "I am happy. So, when are you and Aleesa going to have the mating ceremony?" "We are talking," he said as he stood up. "I am going to the practice field. Want to join? Remember the time Mikayla almost won..." he said with a reminiscing smile and I nodded. It felt like it was eons ago... "Once I open the mail and pay all the bills, I will join you," I said to him. "That is good. So how is Aleesa doing?" "She is still training under Ripley. But he says she is good." He smiled, looking proud before he walked out. I was looking through the mail and separating everything when I noticed something that was dated a month ago. I didn't know why it was only here right now. I tore the envelope and my eyebrows furrowed when I saw it wasn't a bill. And then my eyes widened when I saw what was written on the folded paper. I heard the booming sound of my heart beating in my ears as I read the word again. I thought this was behind me. But it wasn't. Here it was... once again, coming to haunt me!
