CHAPTER ONE
## Scene 1: Morning Routine Lily awoke from a troubled sleep at six a.m., when her alarm went off. She let out a moan and tried to stop it, but it continued. She rubbed her eyes and sat up with a tiresome groan. Her love of painting and drawing was evident in her modest, disorganized bedroom. Through sheer curtains, the room was bathed in a golden glow as the early sun shone through. Lily got out of bed and stretched, her muscles aching from staying up late working on her easel. The gentle cough coming from the other room reminded her of her responsibilities for the day. Lily's mother Anne had been sick for many years, which had a significant impact on their lives. She threw on her customary sweater and slacks and dressed fast. Her thoughts raced with the responsibilities of the day as she made her way to the kitchen down the small corridor. The tiny kitchen was cozy and welcoming. The sound of pots and pans disturbing the early calm signaled Lily to start preparing breakfast. Pouring herself a cup, she enjoyed the warmth and faint bitterness of the coffee. As a reminder of their financial difficulties, her gaze strayed to the pile of medical bills piled on the counter. With all the costs involved, it almost seemed silly to pursue her dream of becoming an artist. Not only did she need to help her mother, but she also needed to sell more of her artwork to maintain them. ## Scene 2: Checking on Her Mother Lily made breakfast and then took a tray to her mother's room. With the help of pillows, Anne was sitting upright in bed. She never failed to greet Lily with a loving grin, even if she was ill. With a feeble but tender voice, Anne greeted her sweetie, "Good morning." "Good morning, mother. What kind of day are you having? Lily sat on the edge of the bed and asked, placing the tray on the bedside table. Despite her fatigue, Anne gave a slight shrug and had lively eyes. "I believe it's better than yesterday. Did you get a good night's sleep? In an attempt to calm her mother down, Lily nodded. Yes, I did. I will be returning shortly, but I have some things to run today. Are you in need of anything? Anne gave Lily's hand a squeeze. "You alone need to be here." Lily gave her mother a forehead kiss while grinning. "I'll be back in no time at all." ## Scene 3: The Art Store The neighborhood art supply store was Lily's first destination. She was met with the familiar scent of paint and paper. She made her way down the aisles, looking for the best deals. Canvases, paints, and brushes were all necessities that reduced her meager funds. With the intention of preserving them, she selected only the necessities. She heard two customers discussing an upcoming art competition with a hefty cash award while she waited in line to pay. A beat skipped by Lily's heart. Gaining would recognize her efforts and ease their financial burden. She decided to check the specifics when she got home. ## Scene 4: The Studio Lily's studio was a small, messy room in the back of the apartment. She slipped through the tiny room, taking care not to knock over the half-finished canvases. Her easel was in the center, a blank canvas ready for her touch. She took a deep breath and allowed her mind to wander while she arranged her goods. Painting served as an escape, allowing her to forget about her daily problems. She lost herself in the activity, and the hours passed unnoticed. Her most recent creation evolved throughout the day. It was a depiction of her mother, portraying her resilience and grace despite her illness. Lily poured her heart into the artwork, and each brushstroke reflected their bond. ## Scene 5: The Neighbor Around lunchtime, a knock on the door stopped her work. Lily cleaned her hands and answered. Mrs. Jenkins, their elderly neighbor, was there with a basket of fresh cookies. Hello, Lily dear. "I thought you and your mother might like these," Mrs. Jenkins remarked, her eyes beaming. Thank you, Mrs. Jenkins. "You're too kind," Lily said, accepting the basket. "How's your mother doing?" Mrs. Jenkins asked, anxious. "She is hanging in there. "We are doing our best," Lily responded, attempting a smile. "If you require anything, do not hesitate to ask. "We're all here for you," Mrs. Jenkins murmured, stroking Lily on the hand. "Thank you, I really appreciate it," Lily remarked, touched by the neighbor's generosity. ## Scene 6: Evening with Anne As the sun went down, casting a warm warmth over the flat, Lily completed her painting for the day. She cleaned up and checked on her mother. Anne was in the living room, reading a book, her face brightened by the warm light. "Hi, Mom. "Mrs. Jenkins brought us cookies," Lily explained, holding out the basket. Anne's eyes brightened up. "Oh, that is great. She's such a lovely woman." They spent the evening talking, joking, and telling memories from the past. Lily treasured these moments because they reminded her of the love and strength that had always been at the heart of their relationship. As the night progressed, Anne became exhausted, and Lily assisted her to bed, carefully tucking her in. ## Scene 7: Late Night Lily returned to her studio as her mother slept. The night was silent, and the world outside remained still. She had a few hours left at work. She opened her laptop and looked for information about the painting competition she'd heard about. The deadline was approaching, but she remained determined. This could be her opportunity to change things. Lily started drawing ideas for the tournament, her thoughts racing. She aimed to produce something beautiful and profound, one that would move the judges and spectators. Her thoughts turned to her mother, their trials and resilience. This would be her inspiration. Hours passed while she worked, the lines on the paper developing into an image. Despite her tiredness, she persevered, motivated by hope and desperation. She knew the journey ahead would be difficult, but she was willing to battle for her aspirations and her mother. As morning neared, Lily set down her pencil. She glanced at the sketch with a sense of success and fresh determination. She knew there was a long way to go, but she was up for the challenge. As she got into bed, exhausted, Lily made a secret promise to herself: she'd make it. She would find a way to succeed despite the obstacles. With that idea, she fell asleep, ready to face the world one brushstroke at a time.
