Chapter1
The moon hung low in the sky, casting its silvery light over the Shadowfang territory like a silent judge. Its glow illuminated the vast expanse of trees and cliffs that bordered the pack's grounds, bathing everything in a cold, ethereal glow. The land was quiet, save for the occasional rustle of leaves and the distant howls of wolves calling to the night.
Selene stood at the edge of the forest, her eyes fixed on the Alpha's den. The stone structure seemed to rise up from the earth itself, powerful and unyielding, much like the Alpha who ruled over it. It had been years since she'd set foot near this place, yet her heart still raced with an ache that was as familiar as it was painful.
Tonight was different.
She could feel the presence of the pack all around her, their power vibrating through the earth, through the trees. Each wolf moved with purpose, with a sense of belonging that she had never felt in her life. She had once believed she could have that, too. That the bond of a mate would make her strong, that her place would be beside Kaden, the Alpha of Shadowfang, the man whose touch she had once craved.
But that had been before. Before his rejection.
Selene's breath caught as the memories flooded her mind, raw and unforgiving. The rejection had happened under the moonlight, just like tonight. She had stood before him, trembling, hoping for acceptance, for love. What she had received, instead, was a public dismissal of everything she had ever wanted. Kaden had looked at her—his mate, the woman chosen for him by fate—and told her that she was nothing more than a weakness, a stain on his reputation.
“You are beneath me,” he had said, his voice cold as ice. “Your wolf is weak, and you are not worthy of me. I reject you.”
The words had shattered her, cutting deeper than any blade ever could. The pack had watched, silent, as he cast her aside. She had no place here. No place in his world.
But tonight, as she stood under the same moon, the pain of that rejection was no longer her defining moment. It was a scar, a memory, a reminder of what she had become since then.
Selene had spent years running from that rejection, nursing her wounds in secret. She had disappeared from Shadowfang territory, leaving no trace behind, not even a whisper of where she had gone. What Kaden didn’t know, what none of them knew, was that her departure had not been one of weakness. It had been a choice.
She had not run from him. She had run to find herself, to heal, to rise from the ashes of the broken woman she had been.
And rise she had.
Her wolf, once feeble and weak, had become something fierce, something untouchable. The bond with Kaden, though rejected, still pulsed through her blood, still burned at the edges of her consciousness. But it was no longer a source of longing. It had become the catalyst for her transformation.
The days of being the overlooked, discarded mate were over. Selene had found strength in her solitude. She had learned to embrace the power she had once been too afraid to unlock, to accept the woman she had become. She was no longer just the mate of an Alpha—she was a force in her own right.
And now, she had come back. For one reason.
Revenge.
The sound of footsteps breaking through the underbrush snapped her from her thoughts. Her heart skipped, and her senses heightened. Kaden. She didn’t need to see him to know that he was near. The bond that still existed between them had become a constant, an ever-present pulse beneath her skin. She could feel him in the air, even without seeing him.
He was close.
Her body tensed, her fingers curling into fists at her sides. She couldn’t afford to show weakness. Not now. Not after everything she had been through. Selene was no longer the girl who had been cast aside. She was stronger, faster, and more dangerous than ever before.
A dark figure emerged from the trees, stepping into the clearing ahead of her. Kaden.
His presence was magnetic, overwhelming. The Alpha stood tall and proud, his dark hair falling in waves around his strong jawline, his eyes gleaming with an intensity that matched the moon above them. He looked every bit the Alpha—the leader of the Shadowfang Pack. His power was undeniable, but it didn’t intimidate her. She had learned how to stand in the face of power.
He stopped just a few feet away from her, his gaze locking with hers. For a moment, there was silence between them—no words, no accusations, just the weight of years of history pressing down on them.
Selene could feel the flicker of recognition in his eyes. Kaden had always known who she was, even after he rejected her. That connection between them was something neither of them could deny, no matter how much they tried.
For a heartbeat, everything hung in the balance. She could see the faintest flicker of regret in his eyes, but it was gone in an instant, replaced by that familiar, cold indifference.
“Selene,” he said, his voice like gravel, rough and commanding. “What are you doing here?”
His words were clipped, as if he had no time for her or for anything she might want to say. That was Kaden—always too busy to acknowledge the things that truly mattered. But Selene was done with being ignored, done with being dismissed.
“I’ve come for what’s mine,” she replied, her voice steady but tinged with the anger she had buried for so long.
Kaden’s brow furrowed in confusion, but she could see the flicker of realization behind his eyes. He knew, even before she spoke the words.
“You think I’ve come for you?” she continued, stepping closer, her eyes never leaving his. “You think I’ve come to beg for your acceptance? No. I’ve come for what you took from me. You took my place, my future, and I’ll make sure you regret it.”
For the first time since he had rejected her, Kaden’s expression faltered. He opened his mouth to speak, but the words failed him. He had been so certain of his decision all those years ago. He had cast her aside without a second thought, never imagining that she would return as something more than the discarded mate he had once known.
Selene's lips curled into a small, bitter smile. She could see the fear starting to creep into his eyes, though he would never admit it. It wasn’t her presence that frightened him, but the reality that she had changed. That she was no longer the woman he could easily dismiss. That the mate he had rejected was now stronger than he could ever imagine.
“I’ve come for my son,” she said softly, the words like a final blow.
Kaden's face drained of color. His jaw clenched, and his fists tightened at his sides. It was the one thing he had never expected—Selene had a child. His child.
“You…” he started, his voice low and dangerous. “You’ve kept him from me?”
The tension in the air was palpable, the weight of their history and the unknown future hanging over them. Selene held his gaze, refusing to back down.
“Yes, Kaden,” she replied, her voice cold and steady. “And now, it’s time for you to face the consequences of your rejection. You will meet your son. You will see what you’ve missed.”
Kaden’s eyes flashed with something unreadable. Anger, regret, fear? She couldn’t tell. But she could see the shift in him—the first c***k in the perfect façade he had built around himself.
Her son was the key to everything. To her revenge. To the power she would take back. To the future she would carve for herself, no longer defined by the man who had cast her aside.
It was time for Kaden to realize that Selene was no longer the woman he had rejected. She wa
s his worst nightmare come to life.
And nothing would ever be the same again.
