Three months ago, she was in her final year. Now she was homeless. Her aunt had taken the land papers after Mama died. Her fiance, Ebuka, left her for her cousin Mira. Even the church security wanted her out by morning.
She didn't ask for money tonight.
"Just give me strength to not die here. Just one more day. Please."
The church door creaked open. Cold wind rushed in.
A man in a black suit walked in, shaking rain from his hair. Expensive perfume. Cold eyes. He wasn't here to pray. He looked like he hated churches.
He stared at her. At her tears. At her folded hands.
"What are you doing?" he asked, his voice low and irritated.
Esther wiped her face quickly. "Praying, sir."
He laughed, but it wasn't a kind laugh. "And has it worked?"
