Rejected
Like a prey who just escaped its predator, Noah Allen stormed inside his bedroom only to find his wife sprawled all over the gigantic bed. He stared at her with pitiful and angry eyes. He abruptly shrugged off all the thoughts that lingered around his head. He had a mission to do. And he needed to complete it without any distractions.
He dropped the manila file on the nightstand and its sound echoed through the room which in turn jolted his wife out of her dream world. She half opened her eyes and the first thing she saw was her tall and handsome husband, Noah, piercing his gaze at her.
Noah Allen braced himself as he was about to spew the shocking news he had been harbouring for weeks
“Sign these papers,” Noah Allen yelled at Laura while pacing to and fro the room. Laura, who lay on their king-size bed rose abruptly trying to understand what was all happening.
“Honey, why the sudden change in your tone, and why are forcing me into signing what I know nothing of ?” Laura asked politely.
Not minding his tone, he blurted out “ Open the file and just pen down your Signature, Laura.
The droopy eyelid of Laura disappeared as she noticed the tension that lingered around. She rolled over to where the Manila file was kept. She dragged it to herself, tore it open and stared at the white paper with disbelief.
“You want me to sign a divorce paper,” Laura cried as tears streamed down her cheeks.
“That's what is written on the Paper, Laura, and yes I need it.” He replied to her stoically.
“I can't.” She pushed the papers away.
Noah halted from his pacing, flashing his contorted face in her direction. His breathing changed as he paced towards her. “ What did you just say?” He roared at Laura.
Laura went tight-lipped. The only thing that seemed to move in her was the tears that fell freely from her eyes.
“You're in no position to argue anything, Laura. Just sign this and let everything be done with everything.” Noah Continued.
“But I thought you loved me. Why are you trying to hurt me?” Laura asked in defiance.
Noah pulled himself together and pierced his gaze at Laura devouring every part of her with his eyes.” I'm sorry, Laura, that was all in the past. Look at how puffy and unattractive you've grown to be. Who do you think will want to take you as your wife anymore? He delivered his speech emotionlessly.
” And for the record, I don't have an ounce of feelings for you anymore.” He added
Like a spear droven directly into Laura's chest, those words shattered her into pieces. Her ears couldn't Understand the gibberish statement she just heard from the Man who at the altar promised to love her in good or worse. The man who confessed to her every night that she was his everything.
The man who always sends her a bouquet of wildflowers as a birthday gift. Both of them were always hanged together, whispered secrets, and dreamt of the future together. But now everything was gone like a wisp of smoke in the cloud. The man standing in front of her was a shadow of who he once knew.
“But —but I love you, Noah,” her voice trailed off as she braced herself for comfort.
“Just sign these papers and let's be done with it,Laura. Just f*****g do it.” He admonished her.
“I can't.” She took her stance.
“Laura, I think it's high time you should know that you and I can't move on. You're becoming more unattractive every day, and I can't have a plus-size unattractive woman by my side clutching tight to my arms as we patrol around the city. It will attract a lot of attention.” Noah's voice became cold and calculating.
"I can't have you anymore as a wife. Everything has to end right now. Look at you, there's nothing you can do to aid my family financially or build up a good name. Instead, you'll ruin it with your….” He paused at the end of his statement after realization washed over him that he had overstepped the boundary
“It wasn't love. It was just out of pity I married you.” He said and Laura sighed as she rashly grabbed the paper and her tears dropped to the file she was carrying. Not minding her wetting the file into condemning it, she signed and tossed the paper away. It flew all over the room and landed on the polished marble floor.
“If this is what you want, so be it. I deserve better. I did think you loved me, Noah.” The emotions she hid bubbled up.
Noah leaned at the wall outside the room as he gazed at Laura who braced herself back to the matrimonial bed they used to share every night. The more he bore his eyes at her the more his disgust deepened. He furrowed his eyebrows, causing his forehead to crease as he bent and grabbed the paper his ex-wife tossed away to the floor.
He got what he wanted and that is all that matters now. The ugly thing he called wife will disappear from his life now. Forever.
His face was bare of any emotion when he walked into the room and saw her gripping the pen tightly as she scraped it on the table beside her, allowing it to make ugly noises.
After he had grabbed everything that fell on the floor, he draped them back to the file and stood upright. Silence crept into the room despite the existence of two human beings in the room. Noah gazed at his ex-wife and took pity on her.
“ Now that it's both over us, you have a limit around here. In a few days, you won't be needed here again.” Noah announced stoically as he disappeared from the room.
Laura, who pretended not to be assimilating the words that spewed out from her ex-husband's mouth, broke down. Her emotions spilled as she bawled out her eyes out in pain. She pretended not to be moved by those words. But right inside of her, she hurts.
She was stabbed. A scar has been carved out in her heart.
Her mind went into a lurid train of thought as those memories of Noah's demeanour changed towards her. At first, he distanced himself from her, no longer slept in the same room with her, and he later became disinterested. And now, he came with a divorce paper demanding that she should sign it.
The matrimonial bed she laid now became her enemy zone. She rolled over and jerked up from the bed and it sagged greatly and burst out of the room they once shared.
She was about to walk past Noah when she overheard him talking to someone on the phone. Pushed by curiosity, she tiptoed to the door and eavesdropped at the conversation.
“She has finally signed the divorce papers. From next week, she'll be gone from our lives forever.” He said.
