LILLIAN POV
I gasped as my eyes fell on the tall buildings and skyscrapers littered all over the place thereby transforming Luxembourg from a town, as I knew it, to a big city with wide clean roads and traffic lights.
“What happened?” I asked breathlessly as I looked around from the airport grounds, as Drake led me to his car, closely followed by Simeon, who had carried my luggage with Josh and Cassie lagging behind with their eyes wide with shock as they looked around the new Luxembourg.
“We had some investors, that visited us five years ago with the intention of pumping money into land and buildings” Drake replied leisurely with a small smile on his lips, “We introduced them to the government and obviously, they made an agreement.”
“Oh wow…the city is beautiful” I marveled, as I stood rooted on a spot, unable to peel my eyes off a beautiful art structure placed on a tall building with white marble walls.
“Cmon little sis…we have a long ride ahead of us” Simeon called out as he opened the passenger seat of Drake’s Prado jeep.
“Coming” I shouted over my shoulders as I turned back to go over to where Cassie and Josh were standing and when I was close enough, I asked;
“You guys need a ride? There is still space for two at the back and I can ask my brother to go drop you at your houses.”
“Naaaa…” Cassie said as she shakes her head, “You are not going my way, infact since you are going over to your parents house, you will be going out of town, so there’s no need for that stress bestest.”
“Yeah, my family driver is on his way to pick me, so there is no need.” Josh said as he roped me in for a hug, which I accepted wholeheartedly and soon, the three of us found ourselves huddled together in one big hug, but it didn’t last for long as Drake, being impatient as always, blasted our eardrums repeatedly until I could bear it no more and hurried back to the car.
And soon we were driving on an open street, with cars of all types and commercial buses flying past us and me having no intention to join in my brothers discussion, allowed my mind to wander dreamily as I marveled at the beauty of the city.
And then suddenly, my phone rang loudly thereby pulling me out of my subconscious and I carried it out from my bag and hurriedly answered it without checking for caller identification, which turned out to be a huge mistake, for—
“Hello sweetheart”
Jonathan’s baritone voice echoed through the car, making me freeze with shock as I watched Drake’s hand tensed up on the steering wheel and Simeon’s head raised slightly in my direction, listening to my call and in order to rectify the mistake, I hurriedly turned off the speaker, but it was too late, because—
“Place it back on speaker.”
****************************
“Hello Jonathan”
I mumbled, with my heart in my mouth as I felt like an helpless prey that’s being cornered by predators for I’m torn in-between ending the call or talking with him freely to prove my innocence for there’s nothing going on between Johnathan and I—
Not anymore.
“So sorry I didn’t call you earlier….I had an emergency patient —” his baritone voice filled the car as the air suddenly turned icy and when I couldn’t take it anymore, I cut into his incessant sentences and asked nervously;
“Why don’t I call you back Johnathan?”
“Oh okay sweetheart” he replied, releasing the final blow so hard that I had to pinned my eyes shut to wait for the weight of the blow to subside.
“Who is this—Johnathan?” Drake sneered as he pulled the car off the main road to a much smaller one with fewer cars on the road.
“He is a friend” I replied curtly, as I turned to face the window, in an attempt to avoid looking into their eyes, “nothing but a a friend.”
“A friend that calls you ‘sweetheart?” Drake jeered, with his voice dripping with venom.
“Brother please…” I begged earnestly as my head throbbed painfully, leaving me no choice but to massage my temples as I tried to make the pain go away, “Can you free me off this one? Johnathan just a friend.”
“Ok ok if you say so” Simeon said with his hands raised in surrender, but Drake, looked like he still has a lot to stay, but after much deliberation, he shrugged his shoulders and clicked his tongue angrily as he redirected his attention back on the road, but not after giving me a warning glance.
I looked at the tallest skyscraper situated at the center of the city as my thoughts wandered far and rested on….Drake.
‘Please o heavens, let this six years apart change him so much…. Let there be a bimbo, so beautiful enough to be a huge distraction to this playboy of a brother.’
And sure enough, his phone rang with his true caller announcing the name ‘Freda’ repeatedly, much to his displeasure and I being curious and wanting the attention to be shifted from me, seized the opportunity and asked goofily;
“Who is Freda? Your girlfriend?”
“Give it a rest Lily” Drake mumbled as he speeds up and overtakes a truck in the process, “we are not done with you and there is no escaping little one.”
