DRAKE POV
“come in.”
“Sir, the Benz corporations just reached out, concerning the Lock wood contract” Benita announced happily as she walked in the lush office to where I stood behind the office chair, gazing down the busy street, through the glass walls, from the my company’s skyscraper, with both hands tucked deep in my suit pockets.
“About time” I muttered, as my eyes trailed a yellow cab winding down the street, then I turned back slowly to see her standing behind the office glass table, holding out a file with a huge smile on her face.
“Here is the Benz Lock wood file sir” she said, “They have agreed to meet with us, so we are now to set up a meeting.”
I took the document from her and skimmed through it with the intention of reading it properly later, even though it’s hella important, but now, I have an urgent issue to worry about—my half sister, who I will be seeing again after six years.
Six years of peace….to an extent.
Now she is coming back, to put me back in my misery…even though I fought it, even though I tried to deny it….I just couldn’t seem to resist her.
‘But that was six years ago and a lot has changed’ said a tiny voice in my head, as I shook my self mentally and redirected my attention back at my personal assistant who had been yapping excitedly for the past ten minutes without noticing my brief mental absence in the conversation.
“…..because of how important this contract is, I think I can schedule the meeting tomorrow, for four in the evening—”
“No” I interjected calmly, as I moved to sit on the white revolving office chair and when I was sure I had arranged myself, I asked, with my eyes piercing her soul…because how could she forget?
“I have a family emergency tomorrow, remember?”
“Oh yes I do sir” she stuttered nervously, “but I was thinking, maybe we could slot this in as it’s a very important—”
“Clear my schedule tomorrow, Benita” I replied silently, in an end-of-discussion tone and I watched with my arms folded on my chest as she opened and closed her mouth simultaneously, then finally she bowed and turned back to leave in hurry that she almost walked into my half brother and best friend, Simeon, who had entered minutes ago with a small grin on his face.
“Careful dear” he said in his baritone voice as he held her hand to prevent her from falling backwards.
“T—thank you sir” she mumbles with her eyes planted on the ground and left.
Then he turned to look at me with an evil glint in his eyes and said, “mother is very excited to see you again.”
I groaned and rubbed my fingers on my temple in exhaustion, wondering how can I some how avoid making that trip, but lily is coming back home after six years, so I’m mandated to be present for the family dinner.
And speaking of Lily—
“What time is her plane going to land?” I asked, as I got up and walked over to my little bar at the far end of the office and turned a glass of scotch for Simeon and myself.
“By two o clock, so we should be at the airport by one thirty” he replied as he took one of the glasses from me and downed the contents in his throat.
“I bet she will be a big girl now.” I said as I sat beside him on the sofa at the meeting area of my office.
“Yes she is and she has grown taller than before” he nodded, then looked at me quizzically and asked;
“Why did you refuse seeing her pictures and videos, including hearing her voice on the phone all these years?”
I crossed my legs as I rested my arm on the sofa’s armrest and shrugged, then I looked around helplessly for a distraction because how do I explain my mental battle to my half brother concerning his sister?
“We are a step away from acquiring the Benz Lockwood contract” I replied calmly as I prayed earnestly for his attention to be diverted….and it worked.
“Wow! That’s good bud!” He exclaimed happily as he stretched his arm forward for an handshake, which I took with a smile on my face as I watched him nod approvingly at me, then he added;
“Father will be so proud” which earned another shrug from me as we released the handshake and shifted back to relax once more on the sofa.
“You know…” Simeon said softly after minutes of scrolling through the magazine he had found on the center table, “….I have always wondered why she had refused to come home for the past six years and the last time I asked, she said we were too controlling….I mean, if we aren’t, as her elder brothers, who then will be?”
“She is so funny” I sneered, “does she really think we will just look the other way and let our only sister been preyed on in this cold hard world?”
“She doesn’t understand the good that we do for her” Simeon laughed, “but soon she will.”
“Yeah, but till then, she needs to be protected at all cost” I replied sternly as I furrowed my brow at him, to show my seriousness, but he just laughed and asked jokingly;
“Scared she will be treated someday, like the way Ella, the chubby one…what’s her name again? Joyce! Joyce and that red haired one….Freda! are being treated by you?” He smirked.
But I wasn’t in the mood for a jeer right now, so I shrugged my shoulders and replied, stylishly avoiding the banter with Simeon;
“I don’t just want my sister to be hurt, so I intend on protecting her with everything I have.”
