Chapter 9: The Phone Call
Rory hesitated for a moment, her eyes locked on Cassius's as she debated whether to answer the phone. But something about the insistent ringing made her feel like she had to pick up.
"Hello?" Rory said, her voice cautious as she answered the phone.
"Rory, where are you?" a voice asked, the tone sharp and urgent.
Rory's heart skipped a beat as she recognized the voice. It was Lily, her best friend.
"I'm at Cassius Blackwood's estate," Rory said, trying to keep her voice neutral.
There was a pause on the other end of the line, and for a moment, Rory wondered if the connection had been lost.
"Rory, you need to get out of there," Lily said finally, her voice low and serious. "I've been doing some research on Cassius Blackwood, and I don't think he's a good guy."
Rory felt a shiver run down her spine as she listened to Lily's words. She had been so caught up in the romance of the evening, in the charm of Cassius's smile, that she had forgotten to be cautious.
"What do you mean?" Rory asked, trying to keep her voice steady.
"I mean that Cassius Blackwood has a reputation for being ruthless," Lily said. "He's been involved in some shady dealings, and I don't think he's the kind of guy you want to get mixed up with."
Rory felt a surge of fear as she listened to Lily's words. She had been so blinded by Cassius's charm, by the luxury of his estate, that she had forgotten to be careful.
"Thanks for warning me, Lil," Rory said, trying to keep her voice light. "I'll be careful."
But as she hung up the phone and turned back to Cassius, Rory couldn't shake off the feeling of unease. She knew that she had to be careful, that she had to watch her step.
And yet, as she looked into Cassius's eyes, Rory felt a surge of desire. She knew that she was playing with fire, that she was taking a risk by getting involved with Cassius.
But she couldn't help herself. She was drawn to Cassius, to the danger and excitement that he represented.
As Cassius smiled at her, his eyes gleaming with amusement, Rory knew that she was in trouble. She was in trouble, and she didn't know how to get out.
