Chapter 16

596 Words
Rory's mind was reeling as she hugged Emily tightly. She had so many questions, but she didn't know where to start. "Emily, what happened to you?" Rory asked, her voice shaking with emotion. "Where have you been all these years?" Emily's expression was guarded, her eyes darting back and forth between Rory and Elijah. "I'll tell you everything," Emily said finally, her voice barely above a whisper. "But first, we need to get out of here. Cassius's men could be watching us right now." Rory's eyes widened in fear as she glanced around the parking lot. She hadn't thought about the possibility of Cassius's men following them. "Let's go," Elijah said, his voice firm. "We'll take my car. It's safer." As they drove away from the mansion, Rory couldn't shake off the feeling that they were being watched. She glanced in the rearview mirror, but saw nothing out of the ordinary. "Where are we going?" Rory asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Elijah's eyes locked onto hers, his expression serious. "We're going to a safe house," he said. "Somewhere Cassius's men won't think to look." Rory nodded, her mind racing with questions. What was Elijah's true motive for helping her? And what secrets was Emily hiding? As they drove through the winding roads, Rory couldn't shake off the feeling that they were heading into a trap. But she had no choice but to trust Elijah and Emily. At least, for now. ---- As they drove through the winding roads, Rory couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. She had no idea where they were going, or what would happen when they got there. But Elijah seemed to know exactly where he was going. He navigated the roads with ease, his eyes scanning the surroundings as if he was searching for something. Finally, after what felt like hours, they pulled up to a small, nondescript house on the outskirts of town. The house was surrounded by trees, and the windows were all boarded up. "This is it," Elijah said, his voice low. "This is the safe house." Rory's eyes widened as she looked at the house. It didn't look very safe to her. "Are you sure this is a good idea?" Rory asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Elijah's eyes locked onto hers, his expression serious. "I'm positive," he said. "This house is secure. Cassius's men won't be able to find us here." Rory nodded, her mind racing with questions. But before she could ask any of them, Emily spoke up. "We should get inside," Emily said, her voice firm. "We don't know how much time we have." Rory nodded, her heart pounding in her chest. She had no idea what was waiting for her inside the house, but she knew she had to be brave. As they stepped inside the house, Rory's eyes adjusted to the dim light. The house was small, with only a few rooms. But it was clean and tidy, and Rory could see that Elijah had taken steps to secure it. But as she looked around, Rory couldn't shake off the feeling that they were being watched. She glanced around the room, but saw nothing out of the ordinary. And then, just as she was starting to relax, Rory heard a noise. It was a faint creaking sound, like someone was moving around upstairs. Rory's heart skipped a beat as she looked at Elijah. "What was that?" she whispered. Elijah's eyes locked onto hers, his expression serious. "I don't know," he said. "But I'm going to find out." .
