Chapter 1
The weather was warmer than normal, especially for it being October. You would almost thing it was the middle of Summer. By now the Trees must have changed colors, but Andrea could not tell. She lost that capability a long time ago. All Andrea could remember on that fateful day was her mothers tears before everything had Gone black. Remembering back on the day she woke up from the accident she remembered thinking the curtains had been drawn. So she did what she normally did in the morning and started to rub her eyes to help wake up. First she felt the pull of something on her hand making her look down at her hand. Only there was one problem. She couldn't see anything. She tried bringing her hand closer to her face incase it was just her eyes. Feeling her heart start to race she realized it was in fact her eyes. 'This can not be happening!' She thought to herself as she once again tried to look at her hand. A tear fell from her eye and she tried to get up. She found this to be fruitless there was something stopping her from doing this. She began to thrash a little trying to dislodge whatever it was that was stopping her.
"Andrea!" A familiar voice rang out "Andrea, Honey, you need to stop moving!" Andrea tried to calm down but her heart kept racing. There was so much noise now that she couldn't understand where it was coming from. "Andrea, dear," the voice tried again "Take my hand, you'll be ok, I promise." The voice sounded frantic and sad. Why did they sound sad? Andrea lifted her hand and felt something take it. 'Another hand?' She thought as she squeezed the new presence she was holding onto 'Yes, a hand... but whose?' settling down in the bed, she tried to calm her heart down but couldn't because of the sound that was blaring in the room. 'Can't they stop that noise?' She thought, brining a hand up to one of her ears 'I can't calm down with that noise.' "Andrea," The voice tried again "Thats the heart monitor dear, you need to calm down and it'll stop sounding like it does."
Andrea took a deep breath and concentrated on the hand she was holding. Soon her heart started to slow down and the noise became less crazy. She could hear the person whisper to someone else and the noise stopped altogether. 'Finally,' She thought, but kept focusing on her breathing. While she was focusing on her breathing a whimper brought her out of her trance. Charlie nudged his head into the hand that was in her lap. Smiling she petted his head "I'm ok Charlie," She whispered "just lost in a memory." Charlie leaned closer into Andrea and she continued to pet him, until he was finally satisfied with her answer. She could feel him huff in satisfaction and remove his head from her lap and settle at her feet. Taking a deep breath she got back to the book she had in front of her. She was glad her mother did her best to help her feel so normal with what she had been dealt. She felt mad at the world at first, but slowly began to accept what had happened and refused to be useless. With help from Anthony, The Alpha of their pack, He helped her get the one thing she always wanted. Her coffee shop was titled "The Hidden Corner." She wanted to have it say something else but her mother scolded for the idea and they both came up with the name. They chose this name because of how the shop was set up. The front of the shop, that had been described to her by her mother, and later discovered as she felt around the whole place to learn where everything was, had a little counter that she had put a cash register and a tablet to help people order what they wanted. There were open tables near the counter to allow those who didn't want a booth to sit where they could see out the giant windows that led out the front of the store. Further into the shop was individual booths that looked more like rooms. She remembered how sometimes she did not like to be sitting out in the open to be stared at by patrons because of her disability, so she requested that there be several rooms that held booths so people could enjoy being alone and comfortable out of other sight.
The back of the shop held the kitchen, that Daniel worked in to make coffee and what ever food the customers had order. He was currently there now. Andrea could hear him making a pot of coffee. "Think you can bring me a cup?" Andrea whispered knowing that he could hear her. He didn't make a sound, but she could hear him grabbing a mug out of the cupboard. If she were to guess it would be her favorite mug. Daniel bought it for her and said it had the saying "I'm not staring because I think you're hot. I'm staring because I'm blind." Daniel had always found a way to make her smile and feel better about things even when she was having a bad day. While she waited for him to bring her the coffee she listened to the people that were currently in the shop. there was a couple of girls sitting at the front of the store "man watching" as they put it. 'Probably teenagers.' she thought to herself as she continued to listen.
The first booth had a guy mumbling to himself over his math homework. She knew he already had it finished but he liked to go over every question to make sure that he actually did it correctly. The booth across from his held Martha. Martha was in her final year of college and had a very popular BLOG that she constantly was updating. She said this was her way to help her get the job as a journalist in a bigger city. Martha was one of Andrea's favorite patrons, and Andrea would miss her when she finally left this little town. Right now Martha was working on her homework, which class Andrea couldn't tell until she heard Martha give a frustrated sigh, slammed her book shut and flipped open her Laptop. Andrea could hear her type hurriedly as mumbling escaped her. "Another angry blog, eh Charlie?" She whispered to him. Charlie huffed, then started to paw at her fee. "Alright you glutton, let's get you some food."
