One idea he gathered, vaguely interwoven in their replies, caused Garner to return to Venn as the ultimate source of wisdom on these issues.
“There seems to be the idea that something is lost—in the Change,” he told Venn.
Venn nodded.
“It is,” Venn said, quietly.
“What?”
“Well, words are limited. Any word requires, for its utility, a commonality of experience. Otherwise, it is incommunicable.”
Garner considered. “Okay,” he said at last, “setting all that aside, how would you describe what is lost?”
Venn shrugged. “I suppose—the human soul, for want of a better word.”
