Chapter 8: VeesVenn did not reply immediately, and Garner resolved to wait for his response. Pauses seemed to be a part of Vee conversation. Alonzo too had generally paused before speaking. It fit with the overall sense of stillness that Vees exuded. Venn’s gaze, on the other hand, was quite different from Alonzo’s. There was the same intentness, but the coldness of Venn’s pale blue eyes made Alonzo’s alluring dark eyes seem warm and fuzzy by comparison.
And yet, there was no actual hostility in Venn’s gaze. Rather, it was precise, careful, and passionless—almost machine-like. It made Garner wonder about the difference between human Norms and Vees, and whether the gulf might be unbridgeable.
