Chapter 7: VennUncle. Garner wondered who that might refer to, but in any case, no one—absolutely no one—came as the afternoon wore on. Garner phoned the restaurant to say he wouldn’t be making his shift—being careful to sound sick. Then he wandered into the kitchen and opened the freezer, taking out the pizza. It was encrusted with frost, and had clearly been there for a considerable time. Still, it was food, and frozen food didn’t go bad. So, he unpacked it and put it into the oven—only to be reminded that he had turned the power off. Should he turn it on? The instructions for that ritual had said to turn the power off at the box. Would turning it back on—somehow—do something? So that the uncle, whoever that was, would not come? He decided not to chance it and set up the alcohol lamp
