James Today is the day that I’m going to start working with Sky. He wants to suddenly do this now, so I’m left with no choice but to agree and be on my way to his house. As I drove, I kept replaying my conversation with him last night. I noticed that our awkwardness towards each other has decreased, but my heart still races whenever I catch him intently watching me. It's like, he's trying to figure me out and his intense gaze makes me shiver all over. “How come I’m the only one in my band who doesn’t know that you write songs for every f*****g artist there is?” He asked slightly amused. “I don’t know if you haven’t noticed but we’ve only talked to each other for about twenty times in the last seven years and none of those times lasted for more than a minute. Also, letting everyone know what I do defeats the purpose of being a ghostwriter don’t you think?” I countered smirking at him. “True, but how did they find out?” He asked pointing at his bandmates with his thumb. “No clue.” I shrugged. The rest of the night went well, I went home early because I was exhausted. I received a message from Sky right when I was about to sleep saying that we have to start today, so here I am heading up the driveway to his house. He was leaning on his front door smoking barefoot, wearing a plain white shirt and tattered jeans when I got there. Geez! I shook my head a bit to gain composure because hot is an understatement to describe him right now. “Hey!” He greeted leaning forward to peck me on the cheek. What the hell?! “Hey...” I replied trying so hard not to blush. “Do you smoke?” He asked lifting the cigarette he’s holding like a joint between us. I’m feeling a bit bold today, so I took it from him and puffed a good amount before handing it back. “Sometimes.” He lifted his chin in acknowledgment and didn’t say anything more, so we just stood there staring at each other poker-faced passing the cigarette back and forth for a few minutes before heading inside. “This.” He said pointing at the very first song I tried to write but never got to finish. “What about it?” I asked, playing dumb because I was nervous as hell as to what he truly thinks about it. “Play it for me.” I froze at his request. Where’s he going with this? “Play it please,” he pushed. I rolled my eyes exaggeratedly and started playing the song on the piano. I sang the first verse followed by the chorus before stopping abruptly. “It’s not finished so.” He didn’t say anything and he just kept looking at me rubbing his lower lip with his thumb, kinda like what he was doing last night when my father was giving his embarrassing speech. I guess this is how he looks like when he’s thinking about something. “You have a nice voice,” he said nonchalantly, grabbing his guitar from the couch. “Thanks,” I replied with a mixture of embarrassment and joy. He didn't talk to me that much after that, he just kept strumming the chords of the song over and over as if he was completely detached from the present. I’ve practically asked about twenty questions and he just completely ignored them. “Sky? Earth to Sky?” I asked waving my hands in his face. “Huh?” Okay, so he really wasn’t paying attention. “Where did you go just now?” I asked. He sighed deeply. “I umm... I really like this song.” His confession made my lips quirk up into a smile. “Yeah?” He smiled back and shook his head. “Yeah, I like it so much that I was just thinking of asking if we can include this in our album. That is if it's completely okay with you. Of course, we still need to talk about legal stuff if you actually agree.” I gaped at him in response. He wants to what? Is he playing me or is he serious? I rapid-blinked at him not knowing what to say or do next. Does he even not realize what this song is all about? “Are you sure?” I asked. “Yeah, if you don’t mind, then I’m sure. We can change it up a tiny bit just to incorporate our style, but I want everything else to stay the same.” I started giggling for a couple of reasons. First, it’s a song I tried to write about him, the lyrics should be obvious, but then Sky tends to be oblivious to most things even though he completely denies it. Second, I don’t think it’s even that good since it’s a “first attempt” song. Third, I have no freaking clue how to finish it. He looked at me incredulously probably thinking that I’m a bit coo-coo in the head. “Sorry, I just don’t know how to finish it. I wrote that when I was seventeen.” My confession must have shocked him because his eyebrows shot so high up. “Seventeen?! Damn! What kind of love and heartbreak have you been through to be able to write something like this at that age?” He teased, grinning like possum eating grapes. It’s the kind of love and heartbreak that is Sky Fontain actually. I shook my head at him and said, “If you want it, you can have it.” And I died once again with his answering grin. Four hours later, we were still working on my song. He didn’t want to start composing new ones and insisted on finishing mine first, so I gave in. He wrote the lyrics for the second verse and the bridge which I think complimented the first verse and the chorus perfectly. We then added guitar riffs and more bass lines to make it sound a bit more like alternative rock. What's left to do is to have the other guys learn it and then we can start recording. We were doing a bit of tweaking when he asked me to sing the alto range in the chorus real quick sliding the mic over to me. I sang the alto range for about three times before he grabbed another mic and sang the melody. The way Sky sings gets me every time. He can put up a solo album for all I know and people would go crazy in a heartbeat. His voice is soulful, soothing, and mellow while Maddox has a very rich, raspy, and powerful one that all rockstars envy. I don't know why he would rather be a lead guitarist when it's clear that he can be an amazing lead singer too. "What?" he asked when he caught me staring at him. "You have a nice voice," I said mimicking his assessment about my voice earlier making him snort in amusement. The truth is, it wasn't just nice, it was the best voice I've heard so far no offense to Maddox. "Okay, let's sing this together?" he asked and I nodded in agreement. He started playing the guitar and sang the first verse and I joined in as the alto range in the chorus parts. It felt a bit lacking, so I decided to do more second voices for the bridge part which both surprised and pleased him. I don't know if it was just me, but I kind of think we sing and work well together. Well, we kind of get along too, so that's a bonus. Anyway, who knew right?
