Chapter Four: The Price of Protection

1018 Words
Isabella Laurent did not sleep well that night. The note remained on her bedside table. Three simple words. Stay away from him. She had read them so many times that the meaning had almost lost its power. Almost. She wasn't afraid easily. She had survived losing her father. She had watched her mother struggle through difficult years. She had learned how to stand on her own even when life gave her every reason to fall. But this was different. Someone had entered her private space. Someone had been close enough to leave a warning outside her bedroom. And the most disturbing part was not the threat. It was Adrian's reaction. Because when he saw the note, something changed. The cold billionaire disappeared. For a brief moment, she saw something much more dangerous. A man who was angry. Not annoyed. Not irritated. Furious. --- The next morning, Isabella walked into the dining room expecting the usual silence. Instead, she found Adrian already there. He was reading documents, his expression unreadable. She almost turned around. Almost. But then she remembered she was not the one who had done anything wrong. She walked in and sat down. Adrian didn't look up. "You should have told me immediately." Isabella stopped. "Good morning to you too." His eyes lifted. "Someone threatened you." She stared at him. "Someone left a note." "Exactly." "And?" His expression hardened. "And you thought keeping quiet was a good idea?" She put down her fork. "I didn't know I needed to report every strange thing that happens to me." "In this house, you do." There it was again. The control. The command. The belief that everyone around him should follow his rules. Isabella leaned back. "You don't own me, Adrian." The room went silent. His eyes darkened. "I know." The answer surprised her. He continued. "But while you live here, I am responsible for your safety." "Why?" A pause. A dangerous one. Because for a second, Adrian looked like he was about to say something honest. Instead, he looked away. "Because I said so." Isabella almost laughed. "That is the most Adrian Cross answer possible." His eyes returned to her. "You think you know me?" "No." She picked up her coffee. "But I think I'm starting to understand you." "And what exactly have you figured out?" She studied him. "You like control because you don't trust anyone else to handle things." His expression became colder. "You talk too much." "And you avoid the truth." For a moment, neither of them looked away. Something passed between them. Something neither wanted to acknowledge. Then Adrian stood. "We're going to the university together." Isabella immediately frowned. "No." His eyebrows lifted. "No?" "No." "You refuse often." "You order often." His jaw tightened. "Someone threatened you." "And hiding behind your security team won't solve that." "It will keep you alive." The seriousness in his voice made her pause. Because he wasn't trying to intimidate her. He was genuinely worried. And that was more confusing than his cruelty. --- The drive to university was uncomfortable. Adrian sat beside her in silence, looking through emails on his phone. Isabella stared out the window. She hated admitting it, but his presence changed the atmosphere. Even the driver seemed nervous. Finally, she spoke. "Do you always make people this uncomfortable?" Adrian didn't look up. "Yes." "At least you're honest." "I don't see the point in pretending." She turned toward him. "That's probably why people fear you." His fingers stopped moving. "And?" "Sometimes people don't fear someone because they're powerful." She paused. "Sometimes they fear them because they don't know what they're capable of." Adrian looked at her. "And you?" "What about me?" "Are you afraid of what I'm capable of?" Isabella thought carefully. The answer should have been yes. Everything about Adrian Cross suggested she should be careful. But... "No." Something shifted in his expression. "Why?" "Because if you wanted to hurt me, you wouldn't warn me first." The silence that followed was different. Softer. Adrian looked away. Because she had noticed something nobody else had. He warned people before he destroyed them. Not because he was kind. Because somewhere inside him, a small part still cared. --- At university, the rumors became worse. Pictures of Isabella entering Adrian's car spread online. By lunchtime, everyone knew. She was surrounded by whispers. "She moved into his house." "She's using him." "Girls like her always want money." Isabella ignored them. But ignoring became harder when Victoria Hale appeared. "You really enjoy making things difficult." Isabella looked at her. "I wasn't aware my existence affected you so much." Victoria's smile was cold. "You don't understand what you're doing." "And you do?" "I know Adrian." Isabella remained silent. Victoria stepped closer. "Adrian doesn't protect people because he cares." "Then why does he?" "Because he hates losing." The words stayed with Isabella. Victoria continued. "You are new. You think you're special because he notices you." Isabella looked at her. "Do you?" Victoria's expression changed. "What?" "Think you're special because he noticed you?" For the first time, Victoria looked hurt. And Isabella understood. This was not just jealousy. It was history. --- That evening, Isabella returned home to find Adrian in the library. But something was different. He wasn't working. He was waiting. "You had a conversation with Victoria." Isabella sighed. "Do you have cameras everywhere?" "No." "Then how do you know everything?" His expression was unreadable. "I make sure I know what happens around me." "That's unsettling." "It's necessary." She stepped closer. "Why do you care so much?" The question hung between them. Adrian looked at her. Really looked at her. And for a moment, the powerful billionaire disappeared. Leaving behind a man who looked tired. "Because someone is trying to use you to get to me." Isabella's expression softened slightly. "Who?" "I don't know yet." "But you will find out." "Yes." The certainty in his voice was frightening. Then he added: "And when I do, they will regret it." There was no anger. No emotion. Just a promise. Isabella realized something about Adrian Cross. He was not dangerous because he lost control.
