Chapter One: The Man Behind the Empire
The world knew Adrian Cross as a monster wearing a perfectly tailored suit.
They called him ruthless.
They called him merciless.
They said he could destroy a company with a single phone call and ruin a person's entire future without losing sleep.
But nobody truly knew Adrian Cross.
Because the man behind the billion-dollar empire had learned one important lesson:
Kindness was a weakness.
Trust was a mistake.
And love was a weapon someone could use against you.
At twenty-eight years old, Adrian Cross owned one of the most powerful corporations in the world. His name appeared on magazine covers, financial reports, and whispered conversations among people desperate for his approval.
Everyone wanted something from him.
Money.
Power.
Connections.
Nobody cared about the man.
And Adrian preferred it that way.
Until the night Isabella Laurent walked into his world.
---
Isabella Laurent never imagined she would live in a mansion.
Especially not one that felt like a prison.
She stood outside the enormous Cross estate, staring at the gates that looked more like the entrance to a kingdom than a home.
Her fingers tightened around her suitcase.
"This is too much," she whispered.
Her mother gave her a gentle smile.
"Isabella, please try to understand. Richard wants us to be comfortable."
Comfortable.
That was the word everyone kept using.
But Isabella didn't feel comfortable.
She felt like a guest in someone else's life.
After her father's death, everything had changed. Her mother had spent years struggling, trying to keep them together.
Now she had married Richard Cross, one of the richest men in the country.
A man who could give them everything they never had.
But Isabella couldn't shake the feeling that some things were too expensive to accept.
The front doors opened.
A housekeeper greeted them.
"Welcome to the Cross residence."
Isabella stepped inside.
The mansion was breathtaking.
Crystal chandeliers.
Marble floors.
Paintings worth millions.
Everything screamed wealth.
But there was no warmth.
No laughter.
No sign that anyone truly lived there.
"This place feels empty," Isabella whispered.
Her mother looked at her.
"Be careful what you say here."
"Why?"
Her mother hesitated.
"Because Adrian hears everything."
Isabella frowned.
"Adrian?"
Before her mother could answer, the atmosphere changed.
The entire room became silent.
Footsteps echoed from the staircase.
Slow.
Confident.
Controlled.
Isabella turned.
And saw him.
Adrian Cross.
He was exactly what the rumors described.
Tall.
Powerful.
Cold.
His black suit made him look untouchable, but it was his eyes that caught her attention.
They weren't empty.
They were calculating.
Like he was studying everyone in the room and already knew their weaknesses.
His gaze landed on her.
And stayed there.
"Who is she?"
His voice was calm.
But it carried authority.
Richard Cross smiled.
"Adrian, this is Isabella Laurent. My wife's daughter."
Adrian looked at her without expression.
"So she's the reason for the sudden changes in this house."
Isabella immediately noticed the insult.
Her eyebrows lifted.
"Excuse me?"
The room froze.
Everyone looked shocked.
Nobody interrupted Adrian Cross.
But Isabella wasn't everyone.
Adrian tilted his head slightly.
"You heard me."
"I heard you," she replied. "I just didn't expect someone with so much money to have so little manners."
Silence.
Her mother looked horrified.
Richard looked nervous.
But Adrian...
Adrian smiled.
Not warmly.
Not kindly.
A dangerous smile.
"Interesting."
Isabella crossed her arms.
"What is?"
"Most people are careful around me."
"Maybe most people are afraid."
His eyes sharpened.
"And you're not?"
"No."
A pause.
"Should I be?"
For the first time in years, Adrian Cross found himself speechless.
Not because she was beautiful.
Not because she challenged him.
But because she looked at him like he was human.
Not a billionaire.
Not a threat.
Just a man.
And Adrian hated that.
Because he knew exactly what happened when people got close.
They disappointed you.
They betrayed you.
They left.
He turned away.
"Richard, make sure she understands the rules of this house."
Isabella frowned.
"Rules?"
Adrian looked back at her.
"Everyone who lives here follows them."
"And what happens if I don't?"
His expression became cold again.
"Then you learn why people don't challenge me."
The warning was clear.
Most people would have been intimidated.
But Isabella only stared back.
"Maybe someone should."
Adrian studied her for a long moment.
Then he walked away.
Leaving everyone behind.
But for the first time in a very long time...
Adrian Cross was curious.
And curiosity was dangerous.
Because Isabella Laurent was the first person who had ever entered his world without wanting anything from him.
And that made her the biggest threat of all.
