Chapter Eleven: The Woman From His Past

1085 Words
The name stayed with Isabella long after Adrian walked away. Clara. One name. One memory. One wound that had turned the most powerful man in New York into someone afraid of love. Isabella sat in the quiet library of the Cross mansion, surrounded by thousands of books she couldn’t focus on reading. Her thoughts kept returning to Adrian’s expression when he spoke about Clara. It wasn’t anger. It wasn’t coldness. It was guilt. The kind of guilt that never leaves. She closed the book in her hands. How could someone like Adrian Cross, a man who could buy anything he wanted, still be haunted by something he couldn’t change? A soft voice interrupted her thoughts. “Still awake?” Isabella looked up. Elena stood by the doorway. “I couldn’t sleep.” Elena walked inside and sat beside her. “Because of Adrian?” Isabella didn’t answer. She didn’t need to. Elena sighed. “You met Clara.” Isabella looked at her. “You know about her?” “Everyone close to Adrian knows.” “Then tell me.” Elena hesitated. “Are you sure?” Isabella nodded. “I need to understand him.” For a moment, Elena studied her face. Then she began. “Clara Bennett was Adrian’s first love.” Isabella listened carefully. “They met before he became the Adrian Cross everyone knows today. Back then, he wasn’t a billionaire. He was just a young man trying to save his father’s company.” “What happened?” “Clara believed in him when no one else did. She stayed beside him when he had nothing.” Elena looked down. “She was the only person who could make Adrian smile.” Isabella felt a strange ache in her chest. “But then?” “Then Adrian started receiving threats.” Her expression changed. “Because of the company?” Elena nodded. “There were people who wanted Cross Industries to fail. Adrian thought he could handle everything alone.” “And Clara?” “He tried to push her away to keep her safe.” Isabella whispered, “But she stayed.” “Yes.” Elena’s voice became softer. “She told him she wasn’t afraid of his enemies. She was only afraid of losing him.” The words felt familiar. Almost like something Isabella herself would say. “What happened?” Elena looked away. “One night, Clara was caught in an attack meant for Adrian.” Isabella’s breath caught. “She died?” Elena nodded. “And Adrian blamed himself.” The room became silent. “He believed that if he had been stronger, smarter, or more careful, she would still be alive.” Isabella understood now. Adrian wasn’t afraid of love. He was afraid of losing someone again. The next morning, Adrian stood alone in his office, looking over the city. His empire stretched beneath him. Thousands of employees. Millions of dollars. A name recognized around the world. But none of it mattered when he remembered Clara. The knock on his door pulled him from his thoughts. “Come in.” Marcus entered. “We found out who leaked Isabella’s information.” Adrian turned. “Damien?” Marcus shook his head. “No.” He placed a file on the desk. “It was someone working with Damien.” Adrian opened the file. His expression darkened. “But there’s something else.” “What?” Marcus hesitated. “There are documents connected to Clara’s accident.” Adrian froze. “What documents?” “Someone has been looking into what really happened that night.” For years, Adrian had accepted one truth. Clara’s death was his fault. But now, for the first time, doubt entered his mind. “Find out everything.” Marcus nodded. “And Isabella?” Adrian looked away. “What about her?” “You’re falling for her.” Silence. Adrian didn’t deny it. Because denying it was becoming impossible. “I can’t.” “Why?” “Because I already failed one person I loved.” Marcus studied him. “Isabella isn’t Clara.” The words hit harder than expected. “She’s not someone you have to save from your past.” Adrian looked at the file again. But his heart was somewhere else. With Isabella. That evening, Isabella found Adrian in the mansion library. He looked different. More distant. More broken. “Adrian.” He turned. For a second, his eyes softened when he saw her. Then the walls returned. “You shouldn’t be here.” She ignored the warning. “I heard about Clara.” His expression changed. “Elena told you?” “Yes.” He looked away. “I didn’t want you knowing.” “Why?” “Because you would look at me differently.” Isabella stepped closer. “I already know what kind of man you are.” His eyes met hers. “And?” “And I don’t see a monster.” Something flickered in his expression. “Isabella…” “You loved her.” A painful silence. “Yes.” “And you lost her.” His jaw tightened. “Yes.” “And now you think loving me will end the same way.” He didn’t answer. Because she was right. Isabella moved closer. “You don’t get to decide my feelings for me.” His eyes searched hers. “You don’t understand.” “Then make me understand.” For a moment, Adrian almost reached for her. Almost. But he stopped himself. “I promised myself I would never let anyone become my weakness again.” Isabella whispered, “Maybe love was never your weakness.” He looked at her. “Maybe it was the only thing that made you human.” The words shattered something inside him. Before he could respond, the mansion alarm suddenly went off. Both of them turned. Marcus’s voice came through the security system. “Adrian, we have a problem.” Adrian immediately moved toward the door. “What happened?” A pause. Then: “Someone broke into the mansion.” Isabella’s heart raced. “Who?” Marcus’s voice lowered. “They left a message.” Adrian stopped. “What message?” A moment of silence. Then the words came. “The truth about Clara will destroy you.” Adrian’s face went cold. Because he knew one thing. Someone from his past had returned. And this time… They weren’t coming for his company. They were coming for his heart.
