Chapter Seven: The Enemy Inside

1061 Words
Adrian Cross had built his entire life around one belief. Trust no one. It was the rule that had protected him. The rule that had helped him build an empire. The rule that had kept him alive in a world where people smiled while holding knives behind their backs. But Isabella Laurent was becoming a problem. Because she made him question the one thing he had never questioned before. His own walls. --- The morning after the security discovery, Adrian was already in his office before sunrise. The city below him was waking up, but he had not slept. Sleep was a luxury he rarely allowed himself. Not when there were threats. Not when someone was watching Isabella. Not when he still had no answer to the most important question. Who was behind it? His assistant, Daniel, entered the office carefully. "Mr. Cross." Adrian did not look away from the documents on his desk. "Speak." "We traced the account used to send the anonymous messages." "And?" Daniel hesitated. Adrian's eyes lifted. He hated hesitation. "Say it." "The account was created using a company device." Adrian's expression changed. "Which company?" Daniel placed a folder on the desk. "Cross International Holdings." Silence. The kind of silence that made people nervous. Adrian opened the folder. Someone inside his company had been watching Isabella. Someone with access. Someone he trusted enough to enter his world. His jaw tightened. "Find out who." Daniel nodded. "And if we find them?" Adrian closed the folder. His voice was calm. Too calm. "They will wish they had never touched her." --- Isabella noticed the change in Adrian immediately. Before, he was cold. Now, he was dangerous. The mansion felt different. Security had doubled. The staff moved more carefully. And Adrian barely left his office. She found him that afternoon standing near the window, staring at the city. "You look like you're planning someone's destruction." He didn't turn around. "Maybe I am." She frowned. "That's not a joke?" "No." The honesty surprised her. Isabella walked closer. "Adrian." "What?" "You can't keep living like everyone is your enemy." His expression remained unreadable. "Everyone is." "That's not true." "It is." She studied him. "Do you really believe that?" He finally looked at her. "Experience taught me that." The sadness hidden in those words caught her attention. "Who hurt you?" The question was simple. But Adrian reacted as if she had touched a wound. "Nobody." She shook her head. "That wasn't an honest answer." His eyes darkened. "You ask too many questions." "And you avoid too many answers." For a moment, they stood there silently. Then Adrian walked past her. "Stay away from this." She turned. "From what?" "My problems." Isabella watched him leave. But something inside her refused to listen. Because Adrian Cross had spent his entire life pushing people away. And she had a feeling nobody had ever stayed long enough to prove him wrong. --- That evening, Isabella received an invitation. A charity event hosted by Cross International. She almost ignored it. Almost. But then she saw the name on the invitation. Adrian Cross. She wasn't sure why she cared. Maybe because she wanted to understand him. Maybe because she wanted to see the world he belonged to. Or maybe because she was tired of only seeing the monster everyone described. --- The event was everything Isabella expected. Luxury. Power. Influence. People wearing expensive clothes and pretending to be friends. She immediately felt out of place. Then Adrian entered. And the entire room changed. Everyone noticed him. Men respected him. Women admired him. Business partners surrounded him. But Adrian looked uninterested. Until he saw her. For a moment, his expression softened. Only slightly. But Isabella noticed. He walked toward her. "You came." She looked at him. "Is that surprising?" "Yes." "Why?" "Because most people who enter my world want something." "And what do you think I want?" His eyes moved over her face. "I don't know." The answer surprised her. Because Adrian Cross always seemed to know everything. --- As the evening continued, Isabella watched him. She saw the businessman everyone feared. The man who negotiated millions with a calm expression. The man who could silence a room with one look. But she also saw small things. The way he thanked the staff. The way he quietly helped an employee's family. The way he stepped between a powerful businessman and a young woman being treated disrespectfully. Adrian was not kind. Not exactly. But he was not heartless. --- Later that night, Isabella stepped onto the balcony for fresh air. She needed a break from the attention. A moment later, Adrian joined her. "You always run away from crowds." She looked at him. "You noticed?" "I notice everything." She smiled slightly. "That sounds exhausting." "It is." The honesty surprised her. For a moment, they simply stood there. The city lights reflected below them. Then Isabella spoke. "Why do people hate you?" Adrian looked ahead. "They don't hate me." "What do they do?" "They fear me." "Why?" His expression became distant. "Because fear is easier than respect." She turned toward him. "And what do you want?" The question made him pause. Nobody asked Adrian Cross what he wanted. They asked what he could give. Finally, he answered. "Peace." The word was quiet. Almost impossible to believe. "You?" She looked at him. "You want peace?" "Yes." "Then why do you keep creating war?" His eyes met hers. "Because sometimes war is the only way to protect what matters." The words stayed between them. Because Isabella understood. She was what mattered. And that realization frightened both of them. --- The night ended with a shocking discovery. As Adrian and Isabella returned to the mansion, Daniel approached quickly. "Mr. Cross." Adrian immediately knew something was wrong. "What happened?" Daniel looked at Isabella, then back at Adrian. "We found the person who accessed the security system." Adrian's expression hardened. "Who?" Daniel swallowed. "The person is someone from your family." Everything went silent. Isabella looked at Adrian. And for the first time, she saw something she had never seen before. Not anger. Not confidence. Pain. Because the person threatening them was not an enemy outside his walls. It was someone who had been inside them all along. And Adrian Cross finally understood something terrifying. The people closest to him were the ones most capable of destroying him.
