Chapter Fourteen: The Forbidden Attraction

944 Words
The past had returned. And Adrian Cross hated that it had brought Isabella closer to danger. The moment he heard Clara’s brother was alive, every instinct inside him told him to protect Isabella. To send her away. To put distance between them before his enemies realized how much she mattered. But the problem was… He no longer knew how to let her go. --- The abandoned warehouse on the edge of the city was almost completely dark. Adrian stood in the middle of the empty building, surrounded by his security team. His expression was cold. Controlled. The same expression that had built his billion-dollar empire. But inside, everything was chaos. “Where is he?” Adrian asked. Marcus checked his phone. “He was here. He left a message.” Adrian looked around. “What message?” Marcus handed him an envelope. Adrian opened it slowly. Inside was a single photograph. A photograph of Clara. On the back were written four words: You never knew the truth. Adrian’s jaw tightened. For years, he had believed he understood what happened. But now he wondered if his entire life had been built on a lie. --- When Adrian returned to the mansion, Isabella was waiting. She immediately noticed the tension in his face. “You found him?” Adrian removed his coat. “No.” “Then why do you look like something happened?” He avoided her eyes. “Because it did.” She walked closer. “Adrian, you can’t keep shutting me out.” His expression softened slightly. “I’m trying to keep you safe.” “But you’re hurting me instead.” The words stopped him. Isabella looked at him. “Every time something happens, you decide for me. You decide what I can handle. You decide when I should leave.” Her voice became quieter. “But you never ask what I want.” Adrian stared at her. “And what do you want?” The question hung between them. Isabella’s heart raced. Because the answer was dangerous. “I want you to trust me.” Something in Adrian’s expression changed. Trust. The one thing he had struggled with more than anything. “I don’t know how.” The honesty surprised her. For a man who controlled everything, admitting that was a weakness. Isabella stepped closer. “Then learn.” --- That night, Adrian couldn’t sleep. He stood on the balcony outside his room, looking over the city. Usually, the view reminded him of everything he had built. Tonight, it only reminded him of everything he could lose. A soft sound behind him made him turn. Isabella stood there. “You shouldn’t be awake.” “Neither should you.” For a moment, they simply looked at each other. No arguments. No walls. No pretending. Just two people who were tired of fighting what they felt. “Why me?” Isabella asked. Adrian frowned. “What?” “Why do you care about me?” He looked away. Because he had asked himself the same question. Why her? Why the girl who entered his life unexpectedly? Why the person who saw through him? Why the person who made him want things he had buried long ago? “I don’t know.” It was the truth. And somehow that scared him more. Isabella smiled sadly. “That’s the first honest thing you’ve said tonight.” Adrian looked at her. “You think I’m dishonest?” “No.” She shook her head. “I think you’re afraid.” The word hit him. Because it was true. He was afraid. Not of enemies. Not of losing money. Not of failure. He was afraid of loving again. --- The distance between them disappeared slowly. Adrian reached out and touched her hand. The simple gesture felt more intimate than anything else. Isabella looked down at their hands. “You’re shaking.” He almost pulled away. But she held on. “You don’t have to be afraid with me.” His eyes met hers. “You don’t understand what you’re asking.” “Then explain.” His voice became low. “If I let myself want you, I won’t be able to walk away.” Her heartbeat quickened. “Maybe you don’t have to.” For a moment, the world stopped. Adrian knew this was wrong. He knew the risks. He knew the secrets waiting in the shadows. But standing there with Isabella, he realized something. He was tired of running. Slowly, he leaned closer. Their foreheads touched. The tension between them was unbearable. Then— A loud crash came from downstairs. They immediately separated. Adrian’s protective instincts returned. “What was that?” He moved toward the door. Isabella followed. “No, stay here.” She frowned. “Adrian—” “Please.” The word stopped her. Because Adrian Cross never begged. He opened the door and stepped into the hallway. The security alarm was flashing. Marcus appeared at the end of the corridor. “Someone broke into the mansion.” Adrian’s face turned cold. “Did they take anything?” Marcus looked toward Isabella. “No.” A pause. “They left something.” Adrian walked toward the table near the entrance. A small box sat there. Inside was an old necklace. Clara’s necklace. Adrian froze. Impossible. His eyes darkened. A message was attached. The woman you loved died because of your promise. Now the girl you love will suffer because of it. Isabella’s heart dropped. The message was not a warning. It was a declaration of war. And for the first time in years… Adrian Cross was afraid. Not for himself. For her.
