Chapter Eight A Death in the Family The following Monday at five minutes past five P.M. Victoria returned to her office, having spent the afternoon in court. Marcia had already gone. On her desk she found a note written on a yellow legal pad. It was written in block letters and was as curt as a telegram. It read: SCOTT CALLED. HIS FATHER DIED. FLYING TO PHOENIX TONIGHT. WILL TRY TO CALL FROM AIRPORT. GIVES HIS LOVE. Victoria sat down in her chair. After thinking for a moment she picked up the phone and dialed the number of Scott’s apartment.
