Days Past
My days consisted of quiet peace. Any occupants that resided in my home had left or passed on to find areas closer to the nearby city. The house I shared with them were just too remote and far from convenience. I remember being quite happy when the old residents stopped coming. They were loud and disturbed the morning bird's song. I loved the tune sweet blue would sing every morning, humming along as she sang. We dubbed it, "Sunrise"; at least I named it and she seemed satisfied with it. I would gather food from the surrounding forest and would perch myself inside of this home that once belonged to men.
The quiet peace I cherished never lasted long. They always came back. I would hear the rumble of something mechanical first. The familiar growl of transport machinery pulling along their wide beds of furniture, trucks full of their boxed belongings, and disgruntled children. It normally followed the same formula. People of a similar bloodline would claim the house as their own and begin making changes. Knocking down walls for more “open areas”, cutting holes in the roof to “let in more light” limiting my attic space.
As long as they allowed my space, I never interfered. I had my home where they could stay for a while, and the time meant nothing to me. When they encroached on me, however, is when I would start misplacing things. I know what to take by observation, and I would usually start small once I'd been provoked. Hairbrushes, toothpaste, elastic bands for hair, shoes, minor, inconvenient, and things that would take a two hour drive to replace and replenish. If they insisted, however, not allowing me privacy, then more important things would go missing. Car keys, expensive toys, medications, epi-pens, and things they seemed to need for everyday life.
Most moved due to the inconvenience of the drive to the nearest town. I always placed the things I collected in one of their many moving boxes or bags. There was only one time I had to resort to something drastic. A woman, older and more stern than most of those who had tried to settle here, along with a team of men, walked throughout my home. Marking the walls with a marker and talking demandedly on what she'd like changed. My space in the manor had already been halved due to the ridiculous skylight, a hole in which i wound my body around, but she wanted to break down the attic to expose the rafters allowing for more “open space”. Enraged, I slammed the doors, windows, and blinds shut, locking her and her team inside.
Far away from their destructive tools and saws. I allowed her a look at me, just a glimpse of my eyes in the dark, I could feel the walls shudder with my rage. My home was angry too, angry at the insolence of these humans to claim what was never theirs. She screamed then, ear piercing, and they all ran for the doors, banging and screaming to be let out. I held them for hours before releasing them. They bolted to their vehicles and didn't look back. I kept my peace for a long time afterward.
