Chapter 4: The Devil's Protection

The Moretti mansion had always been a place where silence spoke louder than words. For years, Lucian Moretti had learned to understand silence. A pause before a betrayal. A hesitation before a lie. A quiet room before violence. Silence had kept him alive. But tonight, the silence felt different. It was not the silence of enemies waiting to attack. It was the silence of a question he could not answer. Lucian stood beside the large window of his private office, staring at the city lights below. The world outside continued moving, unaware of the dangerous conversations and darker decisions made inside the Moretti estate. Behind him, Valentino sat on the leather sofa, a glass of whiskey untouched in his hand. For once, his usual smile was gone. That alone was enough to make Lucian turn. "You have been quiet for ten minutes," Lucian said. Valentino looked amused. "Are you counting?" "I notice everything." "That is exactly why people are afraid of you." Lucian ignored the comment. "You're thinking about her." The room became still. Valentino looked away. "You're thinking about her too." Neither brother denied it. That was the problem. The woman who had walked into their dining room earlier had done something no one else had ever managed to do. She had made them uncertain. Everyone who met Lucian Moretti knew what he was. Cold. Calculated. A man who never lost control. Valentino was different. He was charming, unpredictable, and dangerous in a way that made people forget the danger until it was too late. Together, they were the reason powerful men lowered their voices when speaking their names. The Moretti twins. A family built on fear, loyalty, and blood. But she had looked at them like they were simply two men sitting across from her. Not monsters. Not kings. Not the devils everyone warned others about. Just men. And that bothered them. "She should have been afraid," Valentino finally said. Lucian's eyes narrowed. "Yes." "But she wasn't." "No." Valentino leaned back. "That bothers me." Lucian looked at him. "Fear is predictable." "And she isn't." A quiet understanding passed between them. That was exactly the issue. They could predict enemies. They could predict betrayal. They could predict greed. But they could not predict her. --- Across the mansion, she stood beside the window of the guest room, watching the guards move around the property. The Moretti mansion was beautiful. Almost too beautiful. Everything was perfect. The marble floors. The expensive paintings. The carefully arranged flowers. The quiet elegance. But perfection often hid something ugly underneath. She had learned that lesson a long time ago. People smiled while lying. People offered kindness while hiding intentions. And powerful families always had secrets. She turned away from the window. "Why am I here?" The question had been repeating in her mind since she woke up. Lucian Moretti had given her answers, but somehow those answers only created more questions. A dead man. A mysterious file. A warning to protect her. None of it made sense. A soft knock interrupted her thoughts. She looked toward the door. "Come in." Elena stepped inside carrying a tray of tea. The older woman smiled gently. "You should eat something." She looked at the tray. "I'm not hungry." Elena sighed softly. "You remind me of someone." Her eyes narrowed. "Who?" The maid hesitated. Then smiled faintly. "Someone who also believed needing help was a weakness." She studied Elena carefully. "You know more than you're saying." The maid became quiet. That was an answer by itself. "Everyone in this house knows something," she said. "The question is whether they are brave enough to tell you." She stepped closer. "Are you warning me?" "No." Elena looked at her. "I am reminding you to be careful." "Of the twins?" The maid looked toward the door. Then lowered her voice. "The Moretti brothers are dangerous." A pause. "But danger does not always mean evil." She frowned. "What does that mean?" Elena looked back at her. "It means sometimes the person protecting you is also the person you should fear the most." --- Sleep did not come easily. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the twins. Lucian's unreadable expression. Valentino's confident smile. Two men who were completely different but somehow connected by something stronger than blood. She hated admitting it. But they interested her. Not because of their wealth. Not because of their power. Because she could see something beneath the surface. Something hidden. Something wounded. And that made them dangerous. Curiosity had always been her weakness. --- The next morning, she decided to stop waiting for answers. If the Moretti family wanted to keep secrets, she would find them herself. She walked through the mansion, memorizing every hallway. Every door. Every corner. Until she noticed something strange. A hallway she had not seen before. Unlike the rest of the mansion, this area was darker. Older. Forgotten. At the end stood a locked wooden door. She reached for the handle. Locked. She looked around. Nobody was there. That only made her more suspicious. After searching nearby, she found a small key hidden beneath an old decorative piece. Her instincts told her to leave. They also told her she wouldn't. The key turned. The door opened. Inside was a room frozen in time. Dust covered the furniture. Old photographs rested on shelves. Documents filled a desk. She stepped inside slowly. Then she saw it. A file. Her name. Her heartbeat changed. She picked it up. Inside were photographs. Her childhood. Places she had visited. Moments she remembered. Moments she didn't. Someone had been watching her. Someone had been following her life. For years. A sound behind her made her freeze. "You shouldn't be in here." She turned. Lucian stood in the doorway. His expression was not angry. That was worse. He looked afraid. "What is this?" Silence. She held up the file. "Why do you have information about me?" Lucian walked closer. Slowly. Carefully. As if approaching someone who could disappear at any moment. "Because we were trying to find out who was after you." Her eyes hardened. "That doesn't explain why you know so much about me." Before Lucian could answer, Valentino appeared behind him. For once, he wasn't smiling. "Because this isn't the first time we've seen your name." She looked between them. "What does that mean?" Valentino stepped inside. "It means someone powerful wanted you hidden." "And you found me?" Lucian's jaw tightened. "No." A pause. "We were too late." The words sent a chill through her. "What happened?" Lucian looked at the file in her hands. "The person who protected you spent years making sure nobody found you." "And then?" Valentino's expression darkened. "Then he died." The room went silent. She looked at them. "Who killed him?" Neither answered immediately. Finally, Lucian spoke. "The same person who is looking for you now." --- She should have walked away. Every instinct told her that. The Moretti twins were dangerous. Their world was dangerous. But something stopped her. Maybe it was the way Lucian looked at her. Like he had been carrying a burden he never wanted her to know about. Maybe it was the way Valentino's usual confidence disappeared whenever her safety was mentioned. Or maybe it was because, for the first time in years, someone was protecting her without asking for anything in return. But she knew better than to trust easily. "So what happens now?" Lucian looked at her. "Now you stay here." She almost laughed. "You think you can decide that?" Valentino smiled slightly. "There she is." She glared at him. "What?" "The woman who argues with two men everyone else fears." Lucian looked away, but she noticed something. A small change. A hint of amusement. And that frightened her more than his anger. Because she realized something. The twins were not just protecting her. They were becoming attached. And attachment was dangerous. --- That night, somewhere far away from the Moretti mansion, a man placed a photograph on a table. Her photograph. He smiled. "Finally." His fingers traced the image. "The Moretti twins have found her." A dark laugh filled the room. "Let them protect her." A pause. "It will make taking her back much more interesting." Back at the mansion, she slept peacefully for the first time in years. Unaware that outside those walls, a war had already begun. And the two devils protecting her... Were about to discover they were willing to burn the entire world down to keep her safe.
