CHAPTER 5: The Devil's temptation

1060 Words
Lucian Moretti had built his entire life around one simple rule. Never let anything become important enough to control you. In his world, attachment was a weakness. Care was a vulnerability. And love was a dangerous luxury reserved for people who had never experienced betrayal. The Moretti family had survived for generations because they understood one thing better than anyone else. People could be bought. People could be threatened. People could be replaced. But emotions? Emotions were unpredictable. And Lucian Moretti hated anything he could not predict. Yet for the first time in years, there was something he could not calculate. Her. --- The office was silent. Not peaceful. Never peaceful. The kind of silence that existed before a storm arrived. Lucian stood behind his desk, his fingers resting on a file that contained everything they knew about her. Her name. Her history. The places she had lived. The questions surrounding her. But somehow, after reading every page, he felt like he knew nothing. That was what bothered him. She was not just a mystery. She was a person someone had tried very hard to erase. His eyes moved across the photograph attached to the file. She looked calm. Too calm. Like someone who had learned that showing fear only gave other people power. His thoughts moved before he could stop them. Someone taught her how to survive. A voice came from across the room. "Someone taught her how to survive." Lucian froze. Slowly, he looked up. Valentino stood near the window, staring outside. For a moment, neither brother spoke. Because they both knew. Again. The same thought. The same conclusion. The same person. Valentino turned around. "Did you just think that?" Lucian's expression remained unreadable. "Did you?" A small silence followed. Then Valentino laughed softly. "That is becoming disturbing." Lucian looked back at the file. "It has happened before." "Not like this." No. Not like this. They were twins. They had always shared a connection. They could sense when something was wrong with the other. They could read each other's expressions. But this was different. They did not simply understand each other. They were arriving at the same thoughts. Only when it came to her. --- Lucian and Valentino Moretti were opposites in every way. Lucian was control. Every movement calculated. Every word chosen carefully. He was the man who could sit across from an enemy and make them believe they were safe before destroying them. Valentino was instinct. A dangerous smile. A careless joke. A man who walked into chaos and somehow made chaos afraid of him. Lucian planned the war. Valentino enjoyed winning it. They disagreed constantly. They challenged each other. They pushed each other. But when it came to her... Something changed. They did not need to argue. They did not need to explain. They simply understood. And that frightened them more than any enemy ever had. "She doesn't trust us," Valentino said. Lucian looked at him. "She shouldn't." The answer came immediately. Then both brothers stopped. Because they had both said it. At the same time. Valentino stared at him. "You heard it too." Lucian nodded once. "Yes." A strange silence filled the room. Because they both knew the truth. She had every reason not to trust them. They were strangers. Dangerous strangers. Men surrounded by secrets and blood. Yet neither of them wanted her fear. They wanted something they had never expected. Her understanding. --- The Moretti family had power because they understood the darkness of the world. Their empire was not built overnight. It was built through loyalty, strategy, and survival. The Moretti name carried weight. People lowered their voices when speaking about them. Enemies disappeared when they became too confident. Allies stayed loyal because they knew betrayal had consequences. Lucian had inherited the responsibility of protecting the family. Valentino had inherited the ability to destroy anything threatening it. Together, they were feared. But neither of them had ever been prepared for a woman who walked into their home and made them question themselves. A woman who looked at them and saw something beyond the rumors. Beyond the reputation. Beyond the darkness. --- Across the mansion, she woke up with one thought. Something was wrong. Not because she was afraid. Fear was easy. Fear told you when to run. Confusion was worse. Confusion made you search for answers. And she had too many questions. Why did the Moretti twins know about her? Why did someone create a file about her? Why did a dead man leave instructions to protect her? And why did two men known for being ruthless look at her like they were trying to solve a puzzle? She sat on the edge of the bed, thinking. She hated being watched. She hated being controlled. And most of all... She hated not knowing the truth. A knock interrupted her thoughts. "Come in." Elena entered carrying breakfast. The maid placed the tray on the table. "You should eat." She looked at the food. "Everyone keeps telling me what I should do." Elena smiled faintly. "Because everyone here is worried about you." That caught her attention. "Worried?" The older woman hesitated. "Yes." "Why?" Elena looked away. "Because the Moretti brothers are not used to caring about someone." Silence. She studied the maid carefully. "You noticed it too." Elena's expression changed. "Noticed what?" "The way they look at me." The maid did not answer. She didn't need to. That was answer enough. --- "You know something," she said. Elena sighed. "I know many things." "About me." A pause. "Yes." Her eyes narrowed. "Then tell me." "I can't." "Can't or won't?" Elena looked at her sadly. "Both." That response only increased her suspicion. "Why is everyone protecting secrets?" The maid looked toward the door. "Because secrets are the reason some people are still alive." She became still. "What does that mean?" Elena walked closer. "Your life is not as simple as you believe." A chill moved through her. "You mean my past?" The maid nodded. "Your past." "Who knows about it?" Elena's answer was quiet. "The people who are searching for you." Before she could ask another question, Elena left. Leaving her alone with another mystery. --- That was when she decided something. She was done waiting. If the Moretti twins had answers... She would find them. Even if it meant walking directly into danger.
