CHAPTER 6: A War For Her

1176 Words
She had learned one thing about powerful people. They always believed their secrets were safe. They built walls. They hired guards. They locked away information and convinced themselves nobody would ever find it. But everyone made one mistake. They underestimated curiosity. And she had always been curious. --- The Moretti mansion was larger than she first realized. Every hallway looked carefully designed to hide something. Every painting. Every locked door. Every silent guard standing in the shadows. It was not just a home. It was a fortress. A place built by people who expected enemies to come knocking. She walked slowly, pretending to admire the decorations while paying attention to everything around her. The guards avoided looking directly at her. That was interesting. Fear. Respect. Or an order from someone above them. Probably all three. She turned a corner and stopped. A hallway she had not seen before stretched ahead. Unlike the rest of the mansion, this part looked older. Forgotten. The air itself felt different. Her instincts immediately warned her. Do not go there. Naturally, she continued. At the end of the hallway stood a door. A locked door. She stared at it. The strange thing was not that it was locked. The strange thing was that it looked like someone wanted it to be forgotten. Her fingers touched the handle. Nothing. She stepped back. Before she could decide what to do next, a voice came from behind her. "Curiosity has always been dangerous." She turned. Lucian stood there. His expression was calm, but his eyes were not. "You followed me." "No." A pause. "I noticed you were gone." She raised an eyebrow. "Is that supposed to make me feel better?" "No." The honesty surprised her. Lucian walked closer. "You shouldn't be here." "That sounds like something someone says when they are hiding something." His eyes met hers. And for a moment, neither of them spoke. Because they both knew she was right. --- Across the mansion, Valentino stood in the security room watching the cameras. He had seen her walk toward the restricted hallway. And the strange thing was... He knew exactly where she would go. Not because he was watching her. Because he already understood her. She searched for answers. She hated uncertainty. She hated feeling powerless. A thought entered his mind. She is going to open the door. At the same moment, Lucian spoke those exact words through the security communication. "She is going to open the door." Valentino slowly looked at the screen. A quiet laugh escaped him. "Again." --- Back in the hallway, she looked at Lucian. "You knew I would come here." "Yes." "How?" Lucian was silent. That silence told her more than words. "You and your brother do that often, don't you?" His expression changed slightly. "What?" "You know what the other is thinking." For the first time, Lucian looked caught off guard. Only for a second. But she noticed. Interesting. "I have noticed something," she continued. "The two of you disagree about everything." Lucian said nothing. "But when it comes to me..." She stepped closer. "You already know what the other is thinking." The silence that followed was heavier than before. Because she was right. --- Valentino entered the hallway. "That is a very dangerous observation." She looked at him. "Is it wrong?" Neither brother answered. Again, that was an answer. Valentino smiled slightly. "You really do enjoy making things difficult." "I enjoy knowing the truth." Lucian looked at the locked door. "Some truths are not easy to accept." "Try me." For a moment, something almost like admiration crossed his face. She saw it. And it unsettled her. Because she was beginning to see the men behind the reputation. And that was dangerous. --- The door remained locked. But Lucian eventually reached into his pocket and pulled out a key. Her eyes narrowed. "You have the key." "Yes." "And you were going to tell me about this room when?" "I wasn't." "Honest." "Always." She almost smiled. Almost. That bothered her. She shouldn't be comfortable around them. She shouldn't find their honesty interesting. She definitely shouldn't notice the way Lucian looked at her when he thought she wasn't watching. Or the way Valentino's teasing disappeared whenever the conversation involved her safety. But she noticed. Everything. --- The door opened. The room inside was darker than she expected. Not abandoned. Protected. Old documents filled shelves. Photographs covered the walls. Memories. Secrets. A life hidden away. She stepped inside. Then she saw it. A photograph. Her. But younger. Much younger. She reached for it. Her fingers froze. "I don't remember this." Lucian stood behind her. "Because you weren't supposed to." She turned sharply. "What does that mean?" Before he answered, Valentino picked up a document from the desk. His expression changed. That was the first time she had seen him lose his usual confidence. "What?" Lucian looked at the paper. Then at her. And once again, the twins reached the same conclusion. A terrifying one. They spoke at the same time. "Someone changed your identity." The words made her go still. "What?" Lucian looked at the documents. "Your past was altered." Valentino looked at the photograph. "Someone wanted you to become someone else." Her heartbeat increased. "Why?" Silence. Because neither of them knew. And that was the first time she saw something she never expected. The Moretti twins were not hiding an answer. They were searching for one too. --- A sudden alarm interrupted the moment. The mansion lights flickered. Every guard moved instantly. Lucian's expression changed. The calm disappeared. The Mafia leader appeared. "Everyone to their positions." Valentino looked toward the security screen. His smile was gone. Outside the mansion gates, a message appeared. One sentence. One warning. One name. Hers. She looked at the screen. "What does that mean?" Neither brother answered immediately. Because once again... They had the same thought. Someone had found her. And they were not coming for the Moretti family. They were coming for her. Lucian moved in front of her. Valentino moved beside her. A perfect formation. A perfect instinct. Like they had practiced it their entire lives. But they hadn't. Not for her. And that was what frightened them. Because protecting her no longer felt like a responsibility. It felt natural. --- Far away from the mansion, a man stared at her photograph. The same photograph hidden inside the Moretti estate. He smiled. "The twins finally found you." His fingers traced the image. "Good." A dark laugh filled the room. "Now let's see how far the devils will go..." "To protect what belongs to them." --- Inside the mansion, she looked at the two men standing between her and danger. She still didn't trust them. Not completely. But for the first time... She believed they were telling the truth about one thing. The danger was real. And the most terrifying part was not that the world was coming for her. It was that two of the most dangerous men in that world... Were willing to stand in front of it. For her.
