HEART OF THE STORM
Bracing himself with each step as he braved the howling winds and desert bladed sands, only pausing briefly to call out “Tal’ya!” at each step. “Where did that girl go,” mother sent me to hunt for her when she saw the storm coming, why did she run out, for that matter why was I sent to retrieve her? A young Ma’Thyus continued his search, he caught sight of a glimmer no more than twenty paces in front of him. Excited at the thought that it may be Tal’ya’s shield that she always carried on her back over her cloak, his mind raced with the thoughts of collecting her and returning to shelter and wait out the rest of this awful storm. Closing the distance between himself and the glimmer, he froze. Realizing how foolish his anger was, he was no longer paying any attention to his surroundings and senses. He was now no more than twelve paces from the glimmer, but the glimmer had changed from a reflective gold to a weary purple hue. “Oh no,” he said to himself out loud, softly but inaudible with the winds howling and cursing in the air. Squatting to lower his profile, hoping to be unseen, and that’s when he had confirmed it to himself. The skull of a person lay looking up at him as if to warn him to turn around and go back from wentz he came. The skull partially melted off the bones smoothly and also partially grinded from the winds that have been forcing the sands around the air. All his senses and warning tales came flooding into his mind instantaneously. He had blindly walked into the Sand Mother’s territory. Fixing his gaze on the purple hues he had spotted, he knew now that if this is the Sand Mother, if he lost sight of her it can mean his doom and he will be laying discarded much like his new friend, the head that lays at his feet. The glimmer shimmered from side to side. Not sure what to make of it while the sands continue to make visibility near impossible, he chose to believe this may mean the great beast can’t see him or is attacking something else. Or someone else, oh no. “TAL’YA !” The purple hues stop all movement. Oh no, that was stupid. Cursing himself and his blunder, he knew he just signed his own death scroll. The purple hue made quick movements to close the space between him and where he stood. Stopping less than an arm's reach from his face. He kept still, not sure if it was the sheer speed or the fact that this beast moved faster than the howling sands that are blowing around him. It didn’t matter at this point, he knew at this point if he were to move, he was food. The beast seemed fairly odd at this distance, with his heart pumping so hard, seconds seemed like days and a minute felt like a lifetime. The beast simply moved its larger than his hut size head from side to side. Ma’Thyus realized the beast can’t see in this storm either. The massive two lower teeth that made the entry doors to the beast’s mouth moved ever so slowly as if filtering out the sands from the air. And that’s when the beast gave itself a small pounce in the air, and it’s massive body whipped around at a sound defining speed revealing a massive scaled claw tail aimed straight for Ma’Thyus’ own head, if he had been standing. Without a thought Ma’Thyus sank lower onto the sand as the s***h of the tail ripped the air from where he stood. The beast landed in the same position as if it had never moved from its initial spot in front of him. Scared out of his mind, he lay there not about to risk giving his position to the beast. More bones lay all around him, and his new friend, the skull, has been reunited with the rest of his remains. At which Ma’Thyus noticed that two massive swords rest in the hands of his friend’s remains. If I can reach just one of them I can cut the beast down without or before it notices me. Moving his right arm slowly towards one of the blades, that oddly seemed as if his friend was reaching out to hand him, the beast’s body made a slight shiver and released a massive burst of a shadow charged with lighting from the large fin on the top of its back. NOW, he shouted to himself but within that split second of taking his eye off the beast to grab the sword. The sheer mass of the beast was already disappearing into the sands and he only saw a glimpse of the claw that almost sliced him in two a moment ago. Still in shock that he had survived that encounter, his mind filled with childish memories of tales and stories passed down through the tribe. It was very rare to see anything after encountering The Sand Mother. The tales and songs say she moves through the sand, but I always thought that she was much like the lizard we eat that are half in the sands. How does such a massive creature move through the sands like they are as gentle as water. Oh no, what was that beast attacking earlier? “Thank you friend,” he said toward the skull, “I’m going to hang on to your blades, I fear I may need them at some point. If I am to make it back home.” Ma’Thyus walked with haste toward the direction where he had first spotted the glimmer. He had found nothing at the edge of the dune. Turning around as if to see what else my lay in the sands around him to attract such a beast. Alast, nothing. As he was about to turn around, the sands before him rose like a column and fell to rejoin the floor at his feet, the glimmer of Tal’ya’s shield appeared. “Brother? What are you doing out here?” A few choice words leaped into his mind, with rage and anger boiling up behind them his lips allowed for one word to slip out, “Home.” Pointing in the general direction of their tribe, and they walked with the winds of the storm at their back. Walking along the sands in the direction that she had come from earlier when the storm had first started. Her brother a few paces behind, in her view everytime she looked back to be sure he is still following. Not sure if he is tired or upset, but he is not teasing her or making jokes of any kind like he normally would whenever she did anything that he didn’t approve of. Staying in her playful mood she spun around and continued walking backwards so that he could hear her voice. “Look what I can do,” pointing down at the ground. He looked down at the trail her feet where making and noticed with each step the imprints were fading and becoming lighter with every step. It was as if her feet no longer touch the sands they both are trekking through. Not stopping he looked up and asked, “How are you doing that,” looking back down, “the thing with your feet.” Without a skip in her beat and big old charming smile on her face, “I can do more!” Standing still, she raised her arms and kept them locked in a straight position pointing in opposite directions. With her arms raised, she spun in 2 full circles and the sand around them rose up in a spiral motion matching her rotation, engulfing them and closing at the top. The sand wall she created now cut off the winds of the storm and stopped the sands that were blowing at their backs a moment ago. “See!” Looking around, in stunning amazement. My little sister, is a Weaver of Stone and Sand, or maybe just sand. “ How long have you been able to do this?” “Not long,” looking up in contemplation she continued, “since the last full moon now.” And he thought to himself and counted on his fingers, “So about six days?” “Yeah, sounds about right”. Walking right up to her brother, with the same smile, “do you want to see more?” Puzzled to see what else she can do, he simply nodded his head and said “Sure, show me”. And with that, she was so happy and excited to show off what she has learned all by herself. With a hard stomp on the sands with her left foot the protective walls came melting down to the ground as if they were water being absorbed by the hot sands. He braced himself to be hit hard once again by the sand storm once the walls completely vanished, but it did not come. Puzzled and baffled as to why he did not feel the storm that he can clearly see still swirling and blowing as thick and hard as it was before his little tribal sister made the walls, he slowly turned around. To his amazement, the sand was parting around them as if they were inside of a magical bubble of hidden walls that he could not see himself or know where they were. “Pretty” she whispered. He turned to look back at her and saw that she now looked at ease and the sands continue to flow around them. She controls the sand with such ease. I have to tell the elders, they need to know and fast. “Can you keep this up while we walk back?” With a grin already from cheek to cheek seem to somehow get bigger and her eyes light up with even more excitement. “Yes I can!” And they walked, walked as if the storm that wrapped its vicious claws around them didn’t even exist at all.
