Grace set about trying to find food for Shadow with grim determination. It wasn't because the wolf couldn't hunt in the forest, but because she promised Wolf she would look after him. She also had a responsibility to teach Lady, her dog and the daughter of Shadow. She hired Mrs. Nivea's son Lin as a guide, despite his disastrous job of guiding Wolf.
They set out before breakfast and followed a foot path leading up from the dig site to the ridge of the hills above them. There the trees were more open and more sunlight reached the forest floor. Lin explained it was his favorite place to play because he could see the big birds that flew through and above the trees. He wished he could fly and wondered what the trees would look like from above.
