The Scarecrow and Red managed to became good friends over the period of the summer. Red introduced Grace to tracking and they spent time in the woods before dark, tracking deer. Grace while not particularly fast at tracking kept trying; and after a few weeks she could spot deer tracks and follow them while sitting on a horse. Tracking a deer had to be done silently since deer were incredibly wary and hard to approach. Red could do it, but it took a long time to stalk the deer. They got more enjoyment out of climbing a tree and hiding. In the evenings the deer came out of hiding to socialize and eat. The deer would practically walk right under them. The gray cloaks that Maud had given them made it easier to hide against the tree.
During one of these expeditions Red and Grace saw the wolves
