At the foot of the mountains they continued a southerly course for the rest of the day. When it came time to stop for the evening the Bear introduced Grace to fishing. First he took out his camp shovel and dug up some grubs. He used them to bait a hook on a hand line. Taking off his boots he waded into the freezing cold stream and dangled the hook in the water. Soon he pulled in the line and there was a fish on the hook. By the time he stopped fishing he had four trout. The Bear cleaned the scales off one fish by scraping it with his knife. He split its belly open and cleaned out the guts, finally chopping off its head. He ordered Grace to prepare the other three fish. Grace was hesitant to do it at first but the Bear reminded her that if it was not done they would go hungry that evening.
